Tubercular appendicitis is the appendicular infection with tubercular bacillus, which develops as an extension of ileocecal infection. Tuberculosis is either primary or secondary. Primary tuberculosis of the appendix is uncommon. Diagnosis is made by histopathological examination of the resected appendix. We report a rare case of tubercular appendicitis diagnosed on histopathology. Primary Tuberculosis of the appendix is a clinical rarity. Hence, it is being reported. The case report in this study emphasizes the importance of submitting all appendectomy specimens for histopathological examinat

Infection with the fish-borne liver fluke Opisthorchis viverrini is classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as a Group 1 carcinogen: definitely carcinogenic in humans. Cofactors likely contribute to bile duct cancer (cholangiocarcinoma) caused by this infection. Here we review recent findings that address the role of liver fluke associated H. pylori in hepatobiliary disease and malignancy. We hypothesize that co-infection by O. viverrini and the bacillus Helicobacter pylori is central of liver fluke infection associated cholangiocarcinoma.

Raoultella planticola is a Gram-negative, non-motile, aerobic bacillus. It is an environmental bacteria found in soil and water, and a very rare cause of local or systemic infection in humans. Although some adult cases of R. planticola infection have been reported, childhood local or systemic infection caused by R. planticola is very rare. Reported herein is a rare case of acute cystitis due to R. planticola in a 16-month-old boy with rhabdomyosarcoma of the bladder neck, and a review of the literature.

Intravesical bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) instillation has been adopted for the treatment of patients with superficial bladder cancer. Severe adverse events due to local instillation of BCG are uncommon, with an overall rate of serious complications of less than 5%. We report the case of an immunocompetent adult patient with multi-system effects, namely pneumonitis, granulomatous hepatitis and meningitis, who responded well to standard treatment for Mycobacterium bovis. This case highlights the importance of a thorough assessment of this type of patient.

The association between necrotizing fasciitis and tuberculosis is extremely rare. We report two cases in which the initial clinical presentation of tuberculosis was that of necrotizing fasciitis proven by histopathology. Repeated adequate surgical debridement was performed in both. In one patient, acid-fast bacillus was cultured from a discharging sinus one year postoperatively. The other patient was diagnosed to have pulmonary tuberculosis two months postoperatively. The diagnosis of tuberculosis should be suspected in patients with necrotizing fasciitis with recurrence or unexpected slow res

A soluble receptor decoy inhibitor (RDI), comprised of the extracellular I domain of ANTXR2, is a candidate anthrax therapeutic. Here we show that RDI can effectively neutralize altered forms of the protective antigen toxin subunit that are resistant to 14B7 monoclonal antibody neutralization. These data highlight the potential of RDI to act as an adjunct to existing antibody-based therapies and indicate that inhibitors based on RDI might be useful as a stand-alone treatment against specifically engineered strains of Bacillus anthracis.

Serratia marcescens, a Gram-negative bacillus that belongs to the family Enterobacteriaceae, is a human opportunistic pathogen bacterium that causes many diseases, such as urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, bacteremia, conjunctivitis, endocarditis, meningitis and wound infections. Many plasmides that confers multi-drug resistance were discovered, such as virulence factors, like cytotoxins that damage epithelial cells. The main topic of this paper presents a review about the molecular traits evolved in the pathogenic processes mediated by Serratia and its mechanism of resis

The management of T1G3 bladder cancer is controversial. Diagnostic methods, such as bladder mapping or second-look transurethral resection are recommended to assess risk. Bacillus Calmette-Guérin intravesical therapy with a maintenance regimen is recommended for solitary T1G3 tumors. The timing of radical cystectomy for these patients is controversial, but early recurrence during intravesical therapy is an indication for radical cystectomy. Multifocal disease, concomitant carcinoma in situ and disease in the prostatic urethra and bladder neck also suggest aggressive disease and cystectomy shou

Listeria monocytogenes is a gram-positive bacillus that is rarely associated with infections in the general population. Those susceptible to this pathogen include neonates, pregnant women, and the immunocompromised. The most common clinical manifestations of listeriosis are bacteremia and meningitis. Endocarditis caused by L. monocytogenes is rare with less than 60 cases reported in the world literature. We report the case of an 81-year-old man who suffered aortic prosthetic valve listeria endocarditis, and examine the literature regarding this rare manifestation of human listeriosis.

The subject of bacterial skin infection in the tropics has shown some significant advances in the past few years, although it is still relatively understudied. Of special interest is the emerging concern about the public health aspects of pyoderma, either primary or secondary to scabies, in developing countries. In addition, certain more unusual agents, such as Bacillus anthracis and Corynebacterium diphtheriae, continue to cause significant problems in some areas, while incidence of other tropical diseases, such as endemic treponematoses, has largely dropped.

Aeromonas Hydrophila is a gram-negative bacillus commonly found in soil, sewage, and fresh or brackish water in many parts of the United States. In healthy people, the most common clinical manifestations attributed to Aeromonas are diarrhea and soft tissue infections. In people with suppressed immune systems or liver disease, A hydrophila can cause meningitis, endocarditis, peritonitis, hemolytic-uremic syndrome, or septicemia. We present the first known case of fulminant necrotizing fasciitis from A hydrophila that is not associated with trauma, liver disease, or immunosuppression.

Adenolymphangitis is a common occurrence in filarial lymphedema. Damage to the lymphatics and lymph nodes by F. bancrofti is followed by obliteration of lymph vessels and lymph stasis. Obstruction of lymphatics prevents the bacteria penetrating skin to be evacuated with lymph stream to regional lymph nodes. Colonization of dermis, subcutis and lymphatics evokes clinical symptoms of adenolymphangitis. The question arises which strains of bacteria are responsible for the acute and chronic types of adenolymphangitis. The most probable strains responsible for this condition belong to the cocci and

Anthrax lethal toxin, produced by the bacterium Bacillus anthracis, is the major cause of death in animals infected with anthrax. One component of this toxin, lethal factor (LF), is suspected to be a metalloprotease, but no physiological substrates have been identified. Here it is shown that LF is a protease that cleaves the amino terminus of mitogen-activated protein kinase kinases 1 and 2 (MAPKK1 and MAPKK2) and that this cleavage inactivates MAPKK1 and inhibits the MAPK signal transduction pathway. The identification of a cleavage site for LF may facilitate the development of LF inhibitors.

Atypical mycobacteria causing extra-pulmonary disease in man are well documented. These infections are manifested by the presence of ulcers, abscesses and lymphadenitis. Mycobacterium marinum is particularly noted for infections involving the synovium, tendon sheaths, bursae and bone. Of lesser note is Mycobacterium terrae (radish bacillus), a nonchromogen also associated with tenosynovitis. We are not aware of any previous report of the association of M. terrae with synovitis in Australia. This case report describes a culture-proven case of tenosynovitis caused by M. terrae.

Plague is a bacterial disease, induced by Yersinia pestis growth in rodents, with human transmission by fleas. In numerous cases, lymph node reaction is important. This survey (329 patients and contacts) is the most extensive ever realised, associating plasmidic virulence and immunity studies. From the results, we can retain that: All the strains were 47 Plasmid+. The immunity was precocious, specific, of high titer and persistent. In conclusion, in plaque endemic zone, high bacillus circulation induced a high and perhaps (to prove) protective immunity.

Six patients treated with intravesical bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) for superficial bladder cancer had granulomatous prostatitis demonstrated histologically by transperineal needle biopsy. Four of the six patients also underwent transrectal fine needle aspiration (FNA) for cytologic study. The diagnosis of granulomatous prostatitis was made cytologically in all four without knowledge of the histologic findings. Granulomatous prostatitis appears to be common following intravesical BCG treatment; these cases show that FNA cytology can be recommended as a method for diagnosing this complication

Unilateral conjunctivitis with regional lymphadenitis has been designated Parinaud's oculoglandular syndrome (POGS). The cause has been attributed to various infectious agents, especially leptothrix and the unidentified agent of cat scratch disease (CSD). In 1983-84 the cause of CSD in lymph node and skin was established as small pleomorphic gram-negative bacilli. We now report identical bacteria in the conjunctival lesions of 9 of 24 patients with POGS. This confirms the belief that the CSD bacillus is a major cause of POGS.

Eight of twenty armadillos (Dasypus novemcinctus L.) developed severe lepromatous leprosy 3 to 3.5 years after inoculation with viable Mycobacterium leprae. A total of 988 grams of lepromas containing an estimated 15 to 20 grams of leprosy bacilli has been harvested from these animals. The large amounts of material now available will permit in-depth studies of the biochemistry and metabolism of the leprosy bacillus, and the animal model should make possible definitive studies on the immunology, chemotherapy, and epidemiology of the disease.

A mycoplasma was recovered from the untreated conjunctival membranes of nine sheep affected by Pink-eye. It was neither isolated from the conjunctiva of treated animals which were affected nor from the conjunctiva of normal animals either in contact or not in contact with affected animals. Bacteria found on normal conjunctival membranes were Neisseria ovis, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus epidermididis, Streptococcus and Bacillus spp. Bacteria found in clinical cases of Pink-eye were N. ovis, E. coli, a Streptococcus and Pseudomonas spp.

Squash (Cucurbita pepo L.) is a major vegetable crop in Egypt and is highly vulnerable to Zucchini yellow mosaic virus (ZYMV), which causes severe mosaic, yellowing, and stunting symptoms. In this study, ZYMV was isolated from symptomatic squash plants in Kafr El-Sheikh Governorate and confirmed by RT-PCR and sequencing (GenBank Accession No. PV833355). The antiviral efficacy of two microbial biocontrol formulations-Bio-Nagi (Trichoderma asperellum) and Bio-4 (a Bacillus spp. consortium)-was assessed through foliar application and seed priming at pre-, concurrent-, and post-inoculation timings
