Pathogenic Mechanisms Underlying Cirrhotic Cardiomyopathy.

Cardiac dysfunction associated with cirrhosis in the absence of preexisting heart disease is a condition known as cirrhotic cardiomyopathy (CCM). Cardiac abnormalities consist of enlargement of cardiac chambers, attenuated systolic and diastolic contractile responses to stress stimuli, and repolarization changes. CCM may contribute to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality after liver transplantation and other major surgeries, and also to the pathogenesis of hepatorenal syndrome. The underlying mechanisms of CCM are poorly understood and as such medical therapy is an area of unmet medical need

Automatic Detection of Atrial Fibrillation in ECG Using Co-Occurrence Patterns of Dynamic Symbol Assignment and Machine Learning.

Early detection of atrial fibrillation from electrocardiography (ECG) plays a vital role in the timely prevention and diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases. Various algorithms have been proposed; however, they are lacking in considering varied-length signals, morphological transitions, and abnormalities over long-term recordings. We propose dynamic symbolic assignment (DSA) to differentiate a normal sinus rhythm (SR) from paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF). We use ECG signals and their interbeat (RR) intervals from two public databases namely, AF Prediction Challenge Database (AFPDB) and AF T

3-Year Follow-Up of Radiation-Associated Changes in Diastolic Function by Speckle Tracking Echocardiography.

BACKGROUND: Radiation therapy (RT) results in myocardial changes consisting of diffuse fibrosis, which may result in changes in diastolic function. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to explore RT-associated changes in left ventricular (LV) diastolic function. METHODS: Sixty chemotherapy-naive patients with left-sided, early-stage breast cancer were studied with speckle tracking echocardiography at 3 time points: prior to, immediately after, and 3 years after RT. Global and regional early diastolic strain rate (SRe) were quantified, as were parameters of systolic function. RESULTS: Regio

Spred2 Regulates High Fat Diet-Induced Adipose Tissue Inflammation, and Metabolic Abnormalities in Mice.

Chronic low-grade inflammation in visceral adipose tissues triggers the development of obesity-related insulin resistance, leading to the metabolic syndrome, a serious health condition with higher risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and stroke. In the present study, we investigated whether Sprouty-related EVH1-domain-containing protein 2 (Spred2), a negative regulator of the Ras/Raf/ERK/MAPK pathway, plays a role in the development of high fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity, adipose tissue inflammation, metabolic abnormalities, and insulin resistance. Spred2 knockout (KO) mice, fed with HFD,

Pheochromocytoma as a rare cause of hypertension in a 46 X, i(X)(q10) turner syndrome: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) presents the most serious health problems and contributes to the increased mortality in young women with Turner syndrome. Arterial hypertension in Turner syndrome patients is significantly more prevalent than that in a general age-matched control group. The aetiology of hypertension in Turner syndrome varies, even in the absence of cardiac anomalies and obvious structural renal abnormalities. Pheochromocytoma is an extremely rare cause among various etiologies for hypertension in patients with Turner syndrome. Here, we reported a pheochromocytoma as a r

Vascular function and risk factors in children with epilepsy: associations with sodium valproate and carbamazepine.

AIM: To investigate biochemical cardiovascular risk factors and vascular endothelial function and structure in children with epilepsy on antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), particularly sodium valproate (VPA) and carbamazepine (CBZ). BACKGROUND: Individuals with epilepsy have increased risk factors for vascular disease, particularly lipid abnormalities and elevated total plasma homocyst(e)ine (tHcy). AED induced B-vitamin deficiencies have been suggested to contribute to this risk. Vitamin B supplementation has consequently been recommended for children on AEDs. Early vascular endothelial dysfunction

The contribution of associated congenital anomalies in understanding Hirschsprung's disease.

Hirschsprung's disease (HSCR) is a complex congenital disorder which, from a molecular perspective, appears to result due to disruption of normal signalling during development of enteric nerve cells, resulting in aganglionosis of the distal bowel. Associated congenital anomalies occur in at least 5-32% (mean 21%) of patients and certain syndromic phenotypes have been linked to distinct genetic sites, indicating underlying genetic associations of the disease and probable gene-gene interaction in its pathogenesis. Clear-cut associations with HSCR include Down's syndrome, dominant sensorineural d

[Lipid disorders in patients with HIV-induced diseases].

Before the availability of protease inhibitors, elevated triglyceride levels were frequently observed in patients with advanced-stage HIV infection. Since the addition of protease inhibitors to combination treatments, metabolic side effects (alterations in distribution of adipose tissue and metabolic disorders combining dyslipidemia, insulin-resistance and glucose intolerance) have been observed in HIV-positive patients receiving these treatments. Reverse transcriptase nucleoside inhibitors also provoke metabolic disorders. Dyslipidemia is defined by an increase in triglyceride levels of varyi
