Cardiovascular images: parachute mitral valve in a cat.

A six-month-old intact female domestic shorthair cat was presented to the Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center for further evaluation of a heart murmur. On echocardiography, a large, left-to-right shunting ventricular septal defect was identified. There was evidence of severe left heart volume overload, increased pulmonary artery flow and tricuspid regurgitation velocities, mild mitral regurgitation, and left-sided congestive heart failure. The presence of relative pulmonary stenosis, pulmonary hypertension, and a mitral valve malformation were suspected, but further echocardiograph

A case report of a cat infected with European bat lyssavirus type 1, the Netherlands, October 2024.

In October 2024, an infection of European bat lyssavirus type 1 was confirmed in a domestic cat in the Netherlands. Several weeks before, the owners had found a dead bat considered to be caught by the cat. Nine persons exposed to the cat received post-exposure prophylaxis and four domestic animals from the same household were quarantined. This report stresses the need for vigilance for rabies in domestic animals in countries where lyssavirus infections in bats are endemic.

Evaluation of Leptospira species as a cause of endogenous uveitis in cats: a pilot study.

ObjectivesAlthough Leptospira species infections can be associated with intraocular inflammation in dogs and horses, there is limited information regarding the role these agents play in feline uveitis. The primary objective of this study was to report the prevalence of antibodies to Leptospira species and the presence of Leptospira species DNA in samples from cats with endogenous uveitis. The secondary objective was to assess for coinfections with Bartonella species, Toxoplasma gondii and eubacteria.MethodsSerum and aqueous humor (AH) samples from 37 cats diagnosed with endogenous uveitis that

Early-onset metastatic fibroblastic osteosarcoma of the metatarsus in a young cat: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Osteosarcoma is the most common primary bone tumor in cats, yet it is typically diagnosed in older animals and rarely metastasizes. Among its histological variants, the fibroblastic subtype-defined by spindle-shaped osteogenic cells that generate osteoid-is infrequently reported in young cats. CASE PRESENTATION: A one-year-old intact female domestic shorthair (DSH) cat was referred to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of Ferdowsi University of Mashhad with a one-month history of progressive lameness and a firm swelling on the right hindlimb. Radiographs revealed an aggressive osteo

Embolic necrosuppurative pneumonia in domestic cats induced by a novel Neisseria species.

Three cats, aged 2 to 11 years, presented to the University of Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory over a 3-year period following euthanasia or death due to respiratory distress. Thoracic radiographs revealed nodular, soft tissue opacities throughout the lung fields in all cases. On postmortem examination, approximately 60% to 80% of the lung parenchyma were expanded by multifocal to coalescing, well-demarcated, beige, semi-firm nodules. Histologically, large numbers of neutrophils, fewer macrophages, fibrin, and cellular and karyorrhectic debris effaced the pulmonary parenchyma. The in

The comparison of pathogenicity among SARS-CoV-2 variants in domestic cats.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has been detected or isolated from domestic cats. It is unclear whether cats play an important role in the SARS-CoV-2 transmission cycle. In this study, we examined the susceptibility of cats to SARS-CoV-2, including wild type and variants, by animal experiments. Cats inoculated with wild type, gamma, and delta variants secreted a large amount of SARS-CoV-2 for 1 week after the inoculation from nasal, oropharyngeal, and rectal routes. Only 100 TCID50 of virus could infect cats and replicate well without severe clinical symptoms. In a

Distribution of lesions and detection of influenza A(H5N1) virus, clade 2.3.4.4b, in ante- and postmortem samples from naturally infected domestic cats on U.S. dairy farms.

In March 2024, highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1) virus, clade 2.3.4.4b, was detected in dairy cows in the United States, and at the same time in resident cats on affected farms. To help guide sample collection and diagnosis in cats, here we report the distribution of lesions and detection of H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b influenza A virus (IAV) infection by PCR, immunohistochemistry (IHC), and serology in samples from 4 deceased and 2 living cats from 3 separate affected dairy farms. Although gross lesions were not diagnostic, histologically, all 4 deceased cats had nonsuppurative and necrotizin

Video-Assisted Ventral Bulla Osteotomy to Remove a Bullet Foreign Body in a Cat.

A 7 yr old castrated male domestic shorthair presented for assessment of a chronic left head tilt, losses of balance, and positional nystagmus. A computed tomographic scan of the head revealed several fragments of a metallic foreign body in the left tympanic cavity. The foreign material was removed under endoscopic assistance through a minimally invasive ventral bulla osteotomy. No complications were noted during the immediate postoperative period. Follow-up 5 mo after surgery revealed complete resolution of the neurological signs with no evidence of recurrence. Foreign bodies associated with

Effects of training on Feline Grimace Scale scoring for acute pain assessment in cats.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to determine the effects of training on inter-rater reliability and agreement of Feline Grimace Scale (FGS) scoring by small animal practitioners. METHODS: Seven small animal veterinarians were asked to score a total of 50 images of cats in varying degrees of pain before and after training in FGS scoring. Participant scores were compared with those of an expert rater. Inter-rater reliability was analyzed using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) before and after training (ICC <0.50 = poor reliability, 0.50-0.75 = moderate reliability, 0.76-0.90 =

Dysphagia as a Missing Link Between Post-surgical- and Opioid-Related Pneumonia.

PURPOSE: Postoperative pneumonia remains a common complication of surgery, despite increased attention. The purpose of our study was to determine the effects of routine surgery and post-surgical opioid administration on airway protection risk. METHODS: Eight healthy adult cats were evaluated to determine changes in airway protection status and for evidence of dysphagia in two experiments. (1) In four female cats, airway protection status was tracked following routine abdominal surgery (spay surgery) plus low-dose opioid administration (buprenorphine 0.015 mg/kg, IM, q8-12 h; n = 5). EDA Missense Variant in a Cat with X-Linked Hypohidrotic Ectodermal Dysplasia.

Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia is a developmental defect characterized by sparse or absent hair, missing or malformed teeth and defects in eccrine glands. Loss-of-function variants in the X-chromosomal EDA gene have been reported to cause hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia in humans, mice, dogs and cattle. We investigated a male cat exhibiting diffuse truncal alopecia with a completely absent undercoat. The cat lacked several teeth, and the remaining teeth had an abnormal conical shape. Whole-genome sequencing revealed a hemizygous missense variant in the EDA gene, XM_011291781.3:c.1042G>A o

Zoonotic feline sporotrichosis: a small case cluster in Perth, Western Australia, and a review of previous feline cases from Australia.

Sporotrichosis is caused by species of the fungus Sporothrix that affect human and several animal species. The transmission of sporotrichosis is classically from an environmental source following penetrating injury. The alternative zoonotic route has gained attention due to the rapid and significant spread of cat-transmitted sporotrichosis in South America and Malaysia, resulting in several thousand human and feline cases in recent decades, especially in Brazil. In Australia, sporotrichosis is sporadic and mainly related to environmental sources. Although feline sporotrichosis is rare in Austr

Toxoplasmal meningoencephalitis in a 14 week-old shelter cat with presumed feline infectious peritonitis.

Toxoplasmal meningoencephalitis is a sporadic condition that is often misdiagnosed antemortem, frequently resulting in euthanasia especially in resource-limited settings. Here we report a case of a 7-week-old female domestic shorthair cat from an animal shelter who presented in a compromised condition and continued to display clinical signs consistent with a "failure to thrive" kitten. Weight loss and decreased activity were observed, and later on, neurological dysfunction became apparent. Based on clinical signs, non-effusive feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) was strongly suspected. Other p

Genomics Insights into Mycolicibacterium Hassiacum Causing Infection in a Cat with Pyogranulomatous Dermatitis and Panniculitis.

Mycolicibacterium hassiacum (homotypic synonym: Mycobacterium hassiacum) represents an ungrouped thermotolerant rapidly growing mycobacteria (RGM) species occasionally associated with infections and disease in humans. In this report, we describe a case of pyogranulomatous dermatitis and panniculitis due to M. hassiacum in an immunocompetent adult cat. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the first report of M. hassiacum infection in animals. We also report the results of the in-depth genome characterization of the isolate using a combined short- and long-read whole-genome sequencing (

RPA-CRISPR/Cas9-based method for the detection of Toxoplasma gondii: A proof of concept.

Toxoplasma gondii is a widespread and specialized intracellular protozoan pathogen that affects one third of the world' s population, posing a great threat to public health. As the definitive host, cats excrete oocysts and play a crucial role in the transmission of toxoplasmosis. The current diagnostic tools usually require bulky equipment and expertize, which hinders the efficient diagnosis and intervention of Toxoplasma infection in cats. In this study, we combined (RPA) with clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)/Cas9 technique to establish an easier method for t
