The experience of community-based peer support groups for people living with bipolar disorder: A qualitative focus group study.

BACKGROUND: Peer support has a long history of being offered through community programs, and is increasingly formalized in mental health services to facilitate recovery-oriented care for mental health concerns such as bipolar disorder (BD). This qualitative study explored experiences of community-based peer support programs from the perspective of people with BD, to generate insights to optimise the delivery of peer support in clinical settings. METHODS: Adults living in Canada with BD, who had participated in or provided peer support, participated in one of five 90-min focus groups. Particip

Ethical analysis examining the prioritisation of living donor transplantation in times of healthcare rationing.

The transplant community has faced unprecedented challenges balancing risks of performing living donor transplants during the COVID-19 pandemic with harms of temporarily suspending these procedures. Decisions regarding postponement of living donation stem from its designation as an elective procedure, this despite that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services categorise transplant procedures as tier 3b (high medical urgency-do not postpone). In times of severe resource constraints, health systems may be operating under crisis or contingency standards of care. In this manuscript, the Unit

A chasm: Consequences of poor collaboration between health and education in paediatric cerebral palsy care in Johannesburg.

BACKGROUND: Nearly 20 years since the establishment of the National Rehabilitation Policy, strides have been made within the health and education sectors to improve accessibility to rehabilitation services as well as the quality of life of children with cerebral palsy (CP). Shortfalls, however, still exist in implementing the policy. An in-depth study into the implementation of policy would be beneficial in identifying and understanding the shortfalls of the rehabilitation process. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the perceptions of Speech-Language Therapists (SLTs) working in the Gauteng Departmen

Childhood bereavement: Understanding prevalence and related adversity in the United States.

The death of a parent or sibling during childhood is an adverse experience that increases risk for future behavioral health, academic, and relational problems, as well as earlier mortality. Efforts to estimate childhood bereavement prevalence rates have been hampered by methodological, reporting, and data source limitations. In the absence of national tracking systems in the United States, a quantitative statistical model has been introduced with the aim of estimating the prevalence of this public health issue to aid in needs assessment and service provision. A hybrid of binomial probability a

Profiles of Quality of Life in a Homeless Population.

Quality of life (QOL) is a key indicator in mental health planning, program evaluation, and evaluation of patient outcomes. Yet few studies have focused on QOL in homeless populations. More specifically, research has yet to identify profiles of homeless individuals based on their QOL using cluster analysis. This study developed a typology of QOL for a sample of 455 homeless individuals recruited from 27 community and public organizations in Quebec (Canada). The typology was developed based on QOL scores, as well as sociodemographic, clinical, and service use variables. Study participants had t

Hybrid prevalence estimation: Method to improve intervention coverage estimations.

Delivering excellent health services requires accurate health information systems (HIS) data. Poor-quality data can lead to poor judgments and outcomes. Unlike probability surveys, which are representative of the population and carry accuracy estimates, HIS do not, but in many countries the HIS is the primary source of data used for administrative estimates. However, HIS are not structured to detect gaps in service coverage and leave communities exposed to unnecessary health risks. Here we propose a method to improve informatics by combining HIS and probability survey data to construct a hybri

Digital-Human Public Community Care Integration for Chronic Pain in Low-Income Older Adults in a 6-Week Living Lab Setting: Quasi-Experimental Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Digital health technologies offer promising solutions for managing chronic pain and depression in older adults, yet low-income populations with limited digital literacy face substantial barriers to access. Community-based approaches that leverage existing care infrastructure may bridge this digital divide, but evidence remains limited on effective integration strategies for digitally excluded populations. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated a multimodal digital health monitoring platform for this underserved population through 6-week living lab trials with 86 low-income Korean older adults (4

Mapping death literacy in the East of England: A cross-sectional survey with qualitative insights to inform public health strategy.

BACKGROUND: Death literacy can act as a public health asset that enables individuals and communities to navigate end-of-life care with confidence and competence. It encompasses knowledge, skills, experiential learning, and social action. In the United Kingdom, low levels of death literacy may hinder equitable care and contribute to avoidable harms. AIMS: The study had three aims: (i) to assess death literacy in the East of England using the Death Literacy Index (DLI) to inform applied policy research; (ii) to explore sociodemographic and experiential factors associated with DLI scores; and (i
