Cholesterol granuloma of the maxillary sinus in association with a dental implant-A case report.

BACKGROUND: Cholesterol granuloma is typically a benign granulomatous growth seen mostly in the mastoid process and the petrous temporal bone. Although cholesterol granuloma in maxillary sinus was first reported in the scientific literature in 1978, the occurrence is very rare and it is usually clinically and radiographically manifested ambiguously as maxillary sinusitis. PURPOSE: The presence of cholesterol granuloma in the maxillary sinus in association with a dental pathology or prosthesis has been scarcely known. In this case report, we present a case of cholesterol granuloma in the maxil

Dredging: A conservative surgical approach for treatment of large cystic lesions of the jaws.

BACKGROUND: Treatment modalities of odontogenic cystic lesions of the jaws range from conservative to radical. "Dredging" may be considered the "middle path" between conservative and radical treatment options. It comprises three entities-decompression, followed by repeated scraping of the lesion, and finally, peripheral ostectomy providing margin clearance but without significant morbidity. AIM: To evaluate the outcome of "dredging" in the management of large cystic lesions of the jaws, without major resections and maintaining normal functions. METHODOLOGY: This prospective study was conduct

Assessing the variation in course and position of inferior alveolar nerve among south Indian population: A cone beam computed tomographic study.

BACKGROUND: Trauma to the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) is one of the complications during surgical procedures in the posterior mandible. Most of the time, this is due to inaccurate assessment of an operator from conventional radiographs. Lately, with the availability of advanced imaging techniques such as cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), precise location of anatomic structures has become a reality. This study was designed to evaluate the course and position of IAN in relation to the alveolar crest, buccal cortical bone, lingual cortical bone, and inferior border of the mandible using CBC

Choice of graft material in relation to maxillary sinus width in internal sinus floor augmentation.

PURPOSE: When grafts with solely osteoinductive or osteoconductive effects are used in the maxillary sinus, the medial wall of the sinus membrane should be reflected to receive the vascular supply and the osteoconductive effect. Because the internal sinus floor augmentation is a blind technique, it is impossible to directly verify whether the medial sinus wall is reflected in the operation. The purpose of this study is to describe the modality of choice among the grafting materials and techniques in relation to the width of the maxillary sinus through preoperative planning and measuring in com

Sleeping implant in the temporal bone: report of a case with 20-year follow-up.

BACKGROUND: There is limited knowledge of the long-term fate of "sleeping" or nonloaded implants in the temporal bone. PURPOSE: This article describes the fate of a fixture installed in the temporal bone that remained unloaded for 20 years. PATIENT AND METHODS: A 25-year-old male with hemifacial microsomia had three osseointegrated implants installed for an auricular episthesis and bone-anchored hearing aid (BAHA) in the left temporal bone in 1988. Two of the implants for the ear episthesis were activated the same year, but the fixture for the hearing aid was not uncovered until 2008. When t

3D simulation of interosseous interference in sagittal split ramus osteotomy for mandibular asymmetry.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the pattern of predicted interosseous interference and to determine the influencing factor to volume of bony interference using a computer-assisted simulation system. This retrospective study recruited 116 patients with mandibular prognathism who had undergone sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) with or without maxillary osteotomy. The patients were divided into 3 groups according to the amount of menton (Me) deviation: less than 2 mm (Group 1), 2-4 mm (Group 2), and more than 4 mm (Group 3). Changes in the distal segments following BSSRO

Evaluation of online dose-guided adaptive fractionation for intact prostate radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Dose-guided adaptive fractionation (DGAF) was proposed as a simpler alternative of adaptive radiation therapy, using organ variation simulation for proof of concept. However, its dosimetric benefit using actual daily anatomy changes in prostate cancer patients remains unclear. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the dosimetric benefit and potential risk of DGAF for prostate cancer patients treated with moderately hypofractionated radiotherapy and stereotactic body radiotherapy using daily cone-beam CT. METHODS: Patients assessed in this study were t

Dosimetric robustness of urethra sparing in ultrahypofractionated prostate SBRT using catheter-based motion tracking.

PURPOSE: In ultrahypofractionated prostate stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), genitourinary toxicity is the primary concern. Urethra sparing is a strategy to mitigate potential negative effects of higher single doses to the urethra and bladder neck. We report on the dosimetric robustness of urethra sparing using a catheter-based real-time monitoring device to track both interfractional variability and intrafractional motion. METHODS: In 12 patients undergoing prostate ultrahypofractionated radiotherapy (UHFX), intrafractional prostate motion was monitored using a HypoCath catheter (M

Feasibility of a Novel Surface-Guided Setup Technique to Reproduce Neck Curvature Using two Regions of Interest.

PURPOSE: To improve the setup reproducibility of neck curvature using real-time optical surface imaging (OSI) guidance on 2 regions of interest (ROIs) to infer cervical spine (c-spine) curvature for surface-guided radiotherapy (SGRT) of head-and-neck (HN) and c-spine cancer. METHODS: A novel SGRT setup approach was designed to reproduce neck curvature with 2 ROIs: upper-chest ROI and open-face ROI. It was hypothesized that the neck curvature could be reproduced if both ROIs were aligned within ±3 mm/2˚ tolerance. This was tested prospectively in 7 volunteers using real-time 3D-OSI guidance an

Comparison of set up accuracy among three common immobilisation systems for intensity modulated radiotherapy of nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients.

INTRODUCTION: In intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients, an effective immobilisation system is important to minimise set up deviation. This study evaluated the effectiveness of three immobilisation systems by assessing their set up deviations. METHODS: Patients were randomly assigned to one of the three immobilisation systems: (1) supine on head rest and base plate (HB); (2) supine with alpha cradle supporting the head and shoulder (AC); (3) supine with vacuum bag supporting the head and shoulder (VB). CBCT was conducted weekly for each patient on t
