Life expectancy and death by diseases of the circulatory system in patients with bipolar disorder or schizophrenia in the Nordic countries.

OBJECTIVE: Excess mortality from diseases and medical conditions (natural death) in persons with psychiatric disorders has been extensively reported. Even in the Nordic countries with well-developed welfare systems, register based studies find evidence of an excess mortality. In recent years, cardiac mortality and death by diseases of the circulatory system has seen a decline in all the Nordic countries, but a recent paper indicates that women and men in Denmark, Finland, and Sweden, who had been hospitalised for a psychotic disorder, had a two to three-fold increased risk of dying from a card

Analysis of the culturable gut yeast microbiota of dogs with digestive disorders.

Despite the increasing interest in studying the gut mycobiota of dogs, the association between fungal colonization and the development of digestive disorders in this species remains largely understudied. On the other hand, the high prevalence of antifungal-resistant yeasts detected in previous studies in samples from animals represents a major threat to public health. We analyzed the presence of culturable yeasts in 112 rectal swab samples obtained from dogs with digestive disorders attended in a veterinary teaching hospital. Our results revealed that Malassezia pachydermatis was frequently is

Systematic Review: Fragile X Syndrome Across the Lifespan with a Focus on Genetics, Neurodevelopmental, Behavioral and Psychiatric Associations.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is one of the most common genetic causes of intellectual developmental disability and autism spectrum disorder (ASD), second only to Down's syndrome and associated with a broad range of neurodevelopmental, behavioral, and psychiatric challenges. FXS may be present in infants or young children with characteristic dysmorphic features, developmental delays, and behavioral challenges. The diagnosis of FXS is confirmed by the molecular genetic testing of the FMR1 gene encoding fragile X messenger RNA-binding protein (FMRP), involved in regulating the

Neurodevelopmental outcomes in individuals with VACTERL association. A population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Studies on neurodevelopmental outcomes in individuals with congenital anomalies who undergo neonatal surgery are scarce and have reported contradictory findings based on small study groups. The congenital condition VACTERL association includes at least three malformations: vertebral anomalies, anorectal malformations, cardiac defects, tracheoesophageal fistula with or without esophageal atresia, renal anomalies and limb deformities. Most of these patients undergo surgery during their first days of life. Neurodevelopmental disorders include a broad group of disabilities involving so

A woman's journey through the reproductive, transitional and postmenopausal periods of life: impact on cardiovascular and musculo-skeletal risk and the role of estrogen replacement.

Sex hormones are fundamental for female development and they are important physiologically to maintain the health and normal functioning of several organs such as the brain, heart and bone. It is now clear that the hormonal changes that occur during a woman's life, particularly her estrogen status, can modulate disease activity. This is especially true for cardiovascular and musculo-skeletal diseases, which are two leading causes of morbidity and mortality in women. With the general aging of the population they represent a serious and growing public health concern. Estrogen synthesis and blood

Association of Up-Regulated Plasma Adiponectin With Risk of Incident Depression in a Community-Dwelling Elderly Population.

OBJECTIVE: Despite robust interest in the association between inflammation and depression, anti-inflammatory markers have been scarcely investigated as predictors of the future risk of depression. The aim of this study is to determine whether up-regulation of plasma adiponectin, an anti-inflammatory adipokine, precedes and predicts the development of depression in the elderly. METHODS: This prospective cohort study was launched in 2005. Among 1,000 participants who were randomly sampled from community-dwelling individuals 65 years or older, 633 euthymic individuals without prior history of de

Distinct grey matter volume alterations in adult patients with panic disorder and social anxiety disorder: A systematic review and voxel-based morphometry meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The paradox of similar diagnostic criteria but potentially different neuropathologies in panic disorder (PD) and social anxiety disorder (SAD) needs to be clarified. METHODS: We performed a qualitative systematic review and a quantitative whole-brain voxel-based morphometry (VBM) meta-analysis with an anisotropic effect-size version of seed-based D mapping (AES-SDM) to explore whether the alterations of grey matter volume (GMV) in PD are similar to or different from those in SAD, together with potential confounding factors. RESULTS: A total of thirty-one studies were eligible for

SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy and neurodevelopmental outcomes in early childhood.

SARS-CoV-2 infection in pregnancy has become common, yet very little is known about the impact of prenatal exposure on child development. Our objective was to examine the impact of infection with SARS-CoV-2 during pregnancy on child neurodevelopment in the first years of life. We conducted a longitudinal prospective cohort study among a diverse population of 69,987 children born January 2020-September 2021 in Northern California to members of an integrated healthcare system. Maternal SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy was confirmed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test. All neurodevelopme

Prefrontal activation during inhibitory control measured by near-infrared spectroscopy for differentiating between autism spectrum disorders and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in adults.

The differential diagnosis of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) based solely on symptomatic and behavioral assessments can be difficult, even for experts. Thus, the development of a neuroimaging marker that differentiates ASDs from ADHD would be an important contribution to this field. We assessed the differences in prefrontal activation between adults with ASDs and ADHD using an entirely non-invasive and portable neuroimaging tool, near-infrared spectroscopy. This study included 21 drug-naïve adults with ASDs, 19 drug-naïve adults with ADHD,

Epileptiform discharges relate to altered functional brain networks in autism spectrum disorders.

Many individuals with autism spectrum disorders have comorbid epilepsy. Even in the absence of observable seizures, interictal epileptiform discharges are common in individuals with autism spectrum disorders. However, how these interictal epileptiform discharges are related to autistic symptomatology remains unclear. This study used magnetoencephalography to investigate the relation between interictal epileptiform discharges and altered functional brain networks in children with autism spectrum disorders. Instead of particularly addressing individual brain regions, we specifically examine netw

Association between anti-tumor necrosis factor alpha exposure and new-onset autoimmune diseases in inflammatory bowel disease: a nationwide case-control study in Korea.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Autoimmune-related events following anti-tumor necrosis factor alpha (anti-TNF-α) therapy are increasingly reported, but population-level data on new-onset autoimmune disease in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) remain limited. We evaluated whether anti-TNF-α exposure is associated with autoimmune disease development in IBD. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide population-based case-control study using data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service database (2004-2018). Patients with IBD who developed new-onset autoimmune diseases, including psoriasis, interstitial lung

Adolescent suicidal distress and adult mental health: findings from a 25-year population based cohort.

Suicidal distress is common during adolescence, yet its descriptive associations with adult mental health are not well characterized. Using 25 years of prospective data, we examined how adolescent suicidal ideation (and characteristics-recurrence, seriousness, onset) and suicide attempt are associated with self-reported and clinically diagnosed adulthood mental health. Participants were drawn from the Quebec Longitudinal Study of Child Development, a population-based cohort followed from birth (1997/98) to age 25 (n = 2,120). Adolescent suicidal ideation and attempt were self-reported at ages

Loss of Hes1 in embryonic stem cells caused developmental disorders in retinal pigment epithelium morphogenesis and specification.

Hairy and enhancer of split homolog-1 (Hes1) is a member of an extensive family of basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) proteins and plays a crucial role in neurogenesis, myogenesis, hematopoiesis, and sex determination. It has been reported that Hes1 is essential for precursors maintenance, optic cup-stalk boundary maintenance, and morphogenesis of the retina. However, it still reminds questions about the role and mechanism of Hes1 in the development of retinal pigment epithelial cells. In our study, We generated Hes1-/- human embrsyonic stem cells, and attempted to induce them into retinal pigment

Decision-making and Risky Behavior in Individuals with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: A 10-year Longitudinal Study.

We assessed 85 children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and 50 typically developing children (TD) (Mage = 11.59, 57.8% boys) with the Hungry Donkey Task (HDT) at baseline and 2-year follow-up, and the Iowa Gambling Task at 10-year follow-up (75% retention). Improvement in the proportion of advantageous choices was observed from two- to 10-year follow-up, but the ADHD group improved less and was outperformed by the TD group at the 10-year follow-up. More advantageous choices on the HDT at baseline predicted less risky behavior at 10-year follow-up. Male sex and more inatten
