Communities Helping the Hearing of Infants by Reaching Parents (CHHIRP) through patient navigation: a hybrid implementation effectiveness stepped wedge trial protocol.

INTRODUCTION: As the most common neonatal sensory disorder in the USA, infant hearing loss has an incidence of 1.7 per 1000 births. The consequences of delayed diagnosis and failure to obtain timely intervention include significant communication impairment and negative socioeconomic effects. Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) national standards dictate that all infants should be screened and diagnosed by 3 months of age and there is a need for interventions that promote adherence to timely diagnosis. Patient navigation (PN) has been shown to be efficacious to decrease non-adherenc

Accelerated resolution of inflammation underlies sex differences in inflammatory responses in humans.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease occurs at lower incidence in premenopausal females compared with age-matched males. This variation may be linked to sex differences in inflammation. We prospectively investigated whether inflammation and components of the inflammatory response are altered in females compared with males. METHODS: We performed 2 clinical studies in healthy volunteers. In 12 men and 12 women, we assessed systemic inflammatory markers and vascular function using brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD). In a further 8 volunteers of each sex, we assessed FMD response to glyce

Developing an index for the orthodontic treatment need in paediatric patients with obstructive sleep apnoea: a protocol for a novel communication tool between physicians and orthodontists.

INTRODUCTION: Sleep disordered breathing in the paediatric population can manifest as an array of different systemic symptoms; among them is a distinct malocclusion and craniofacial phenotype. Emerging research suggests that the treatment of this malocclusion and/or craniofacial phenotype through orthodontic intervention may help with the symptoms of these patients. Selecting the patients who would benefit from orthodontic treatment can be a difficult task for the physician with minimal dental training. Therefore the aim of this study is to develop a simple index to be used by medical professi

Challenges for academic investigator-initiated pediatric trials for rare diseases.

BACKGROUND: Clinical trials require great effort, time, expertise, and money. For clinicians at university hospitals with their full work load of teaching and medical care, the planning of an investigator-initiated clinical trial seems almost unthinkable. Despite their expertise in distinct diseases, university clinicians lack the time necessary to organize the funding and to initiate and conduct Phase III clinical trials in adults or in children. OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine whether the difficulties faced by a clinician conducting a pediatric clinical trial can be overcome by passionate

Being Human in the Age of AI: Transcending with Machines or Losing Connections with Others and the Self? (A Reflection on Turkle and Kurzweil).

This paper explores the psychological and existential implications of engaging with artificial intelligence (AI) in contemporary life, drawing on a reflexive account of lived experience of the author as a lecturer, researcher, and practicing psychologist. The increasing integration of AI into everyday practices presents a fundamental tension: while AI may enhance human cognitive capacities and open up new possibilities for development, it may also contribute to the erosion of authentic human relationships and the experience of the self. To examine this tension, the paper engages with two contr

Applications of Artificial Intelligence in Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment.

Driven by changes in lifestyle and environmental factors, the global incidence of cancer is steadily increasing, which has established it as a leading cause of mortality worldwide. The current paradigm for cancer diagnosis and treatment relies on conventional methods, such as imaging, endoscopy, and tissue biopsy, which present significant limitations regarding sensitivity in early screening, diagnostic specificity, and personalized treatment. Consequently, the development of more efficient and accurate technologies remains a major objective in modern oncology research, and artificial intellig

Evaluating Traditional Bonesetting Interventions: A Methodological Review and Framework for Clinical Research.

Traditional bonesetting (TBS) remains an important source of fracture care in many low- and middle-income settings. Still, its evidence base is difficult to interpret because care pathways are heterogeneous, practitioner-dependent, and often incompletely specified. This methodological review synthesizes recurring design and reporting problems in TBS research and translates established complex-intervention principles into a practical framework. PubMed was the principal biomedical source, supplemented by Google Scholar, citation chaining, and targeted searches of methodological and implementatio

Precision Genome Editing in Domestic Animals: A New Era for Agriculture and Medicine.

Precision genome editing technologies have transformed the generation and application of genetically engineered livestock, positioning domestic animals as powerful models for agriculture, biomedicine, and basic research. Historically, genetic engineering in livestock was constrained by the absence of embryonic stem cells, low efficiency of homologous recombination, long gestation periods, and extended generation intervals. The advent of programmable nucleases, including zinc finger nucleases, transcription activator-like effector nucleases, and CRISPR-Cas systems, has overcome many of these ba

Rat models for arterial calcification associated with chronic kidney disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Arterial calcification represents a major burden in chronic kidney disease (CKD) and is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Rodent models are essential for preclinical research on arterial calcification mechanisms and potential therapeutic interventions, permitting longitudinal analysis of disease progression, which is ethically unfeasible in humans. In this study, we specifically focused on rat models as representative rodent models, given their well-established use in cardiovascular research. Through systematic literature screening, we identified 470 studies employi

Distribution of Virulence Determinants (esp, cylA, and gelE) Among Clinical Enterococcus Isolates: A Molecular Study From Central India.

BACKGROUND: The genus Enterococcus contains gram-positive cocci. Before the widespread use of antibiotics, enterococci were known causes of endocarditis, urinary tract infections (UTIs), and intra-abdominal infections. The three most important enterococcal virulence agents discovered are cytolysin (cylA), enterococcal surface protein (esp), and gelatinase (gelE). Serious concerns about infectious illnesses are raised by the increasing number of genes for antibiotic resistance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was granted permission by the Institutional Ethical Committee (MU/Research/EC/Ph.D./
