Children with social anxiety and other anxiety disorders show similar deficits in habitual emotional regulation: evidence for a transdiagnostic phenomenon.

Deficits in emotion regulation (ER) are an important factor in maintaining social anxiety disorder (SAD) in adults. As SAD and ER problems typically develop during childhood and adolescence, and are maintained dynamically within the parent-child dyad, research on families can help to reveal the role ER plays in the early development of SAD. The current study assessed self-reported habitual ER in dyads of children with SAD (n = 31), children with mixed anxiety disorders (MAD; n = 41) and healthy control children (HC; n = 36), and their parents. Results indicate a transdiagnostic quality of ER i

The Value of Chinese Version GAD-7 and PHQ-9 to Screen Anxiety and Depression in Chinese Outpatients with Atypical Chest Pain.

BACKGROUND: Atypical chest pain in some outpatients could derive from mental disorders. It is necessary for them to have a preliminary emotional assessment in the outpatient department of Cardiology before psychiatric outpatient visits. METHODS: This study included 122 Chinese outpatients with atypical chest pain in the department of Cardiology. They accepted routine examinations, including treadmill test, and were judged by the three-question method as highly likely to have emotional disorders. Then, a standard questionnaire package containing the Chinese version of the seven-item scale for

The economic burden of mental disorders: results from the Netherlands mental health survey and incidence study-2.

OBJECTIVE: Currently, there is a paucity of up-to-date estimates of the economic burden caused by mental disorders. Such information could provide vital insight into one of the most serious and costly-yet to some extent preventable-health challenges facing the world today. METHOD: Data from a national psychiatric-epidemiological cohort study (NEMESIS-2, N = 6506) were used to provide reliable, relevant, and up-to-date cost estimates (in 2019 Euro) regarding healthcare costs, productivity losses, and patient and family costs associated with DSM-IV mental disorders both at individual level, but

Self-concept and self-consciousness in adults with Tourette syndrome.

The hypothesis that adults with Tourette Syndrome (TS) have a lower level of self-concept and a higher level of public self-consciousness and social anxiety than the general population was examined. Ninety-eight suitable adults responded to a letter distributed to the members of the Tourette Syndrome Foundation of Canada. The findings indicated that the group with TS and high obsessive-compulsive symptoms, but not TS alone, had significantly lower self-concepts than the general population. Both males and females with TS and high obsessive-compulsive symptoms scored higher on social anxiety tha

Vagus nerve stimulation promotes generalization of conditioned fear extinction and reduces anxiety in rats.

BACKGROUND: Exposure-based therapies are used to treat a variety of trauma- and anxiety-related disorders by generating successful extinction following cue exposure during treatment. The development of adjuvant strategies that accelerate extinction learning, improve tolerability, and increase efficiency of treatment could increase the efficacy of exposure-based therapies. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) paired with exposure can enhance fear extinction, in rat models of psychiatric disorders, and chronic administration of VNS reduces anxiety in rats and humans. OBJECTIVE: We tested whether VNS,

Treatment of Comorbid Psychiatric Disorders with Bipolar Disorder.

Life time psychiatric comorbidities of bipolar disorders are highly prevalent. Anxiety disorders, alcohol-substance use disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder and attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder are the most common comorbid psychiatric conditions in bipolar disorders. Psychiatric comorbidity of bipolar disorders is strongly associated with poor treatment response, higher recurrence of mood episodes, suicide attempts, rapid-cycling, worse general functioning and quality of life. Therefore, considering the huge impact of comorbidity on the bipolar disorder illness course, treatmen

Hypochondriacal concerns and somatization in panic disorder.

To clarify the relationship between panic disorder and the symptoms of hypochondriasis and somatization, we evaluated these symptoms and diagnoses in patients attending an Anxiety Disorders Clinic. Structured clinical interviews, self-report measures, and symptom diaries were used to assess 21 patients with panic disorder, 23 patients with social phobia, and 22 control subjects with no psychiatric disorders. Ten of the patients with panic disorder (48%) also met DSM-IV criteria for hypochondriasis, whereas only one of the patients with social phobia and none of the healthy control subjects met

Mendelianization: Concentrating Polygenic Signal Into a Single Causal Locus.

Complex disorders such as depression and alcohol use involve numerous genetic variants, and implicated loci continue to grow with sample size. This proliferation hampers interpretability, as the mechanisms by which so many variants jointly contribute to pathophysiology remain unclear. In contrast, classical Mendelian diseases arise from a single causal locus and are easier to interpret. We thus introduce Mendelianization-an algorithm distinct from Mendelian randomization-that learns weighted combinations of outcomes so that each aggregated phenotype concentrates association at one locus. We pr

U.S. student pharmacists perspectives on the pharmacogenomics of escitalopram and aripiprazole.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) remains a significant illness worldwide, yet antidepressant therapy often follows an empirical "trial-and-error" approach. Escitalopram, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor is approved for MDD and generalized anxiety disorders, while aripiprazole (ARI), an atypical antipsychotic, is used as adjunctive therapy in treatment-resistant depression. Despite the broad availability of these agents, outcomes remain suboptimal. Data from the STAR*D trial indicate that only one-third of patients achieve remission after their first antidepressant trial, with many requi

A Novel Measure of Real-Time Perseverative Thought.

Perseverative thinking (PT), or repetitive negative thinking, has historically been measured using global self-report scales. New methods of assessment are needed to advance understanding of this inherently temporal process. We developed an intensive longitudinal method for assessing PT. A mixed sample of 77 individuals ranging widely in trait PT, including persons with PT-related disorders (generalized anxiety disorder, major depression) and persons without psychopathology, used a joystick to provide continuous ratings of thought valence and intensity following exposure to scenarios of differ

Anxiety disorders in acute central nervous system infections.

BACKGROUND: Patients affected by acute central nervous system (ACNS) infectionsmay present different complications, including neuropsychological disorders. Nevertheless, psychopathological impairment has been rarely measured by appropriate and validated tests. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Survivors of childhood ACNS infections admitted to the Bambino Gesù Children's Hospital, Rome, Italy, from June 2013 to June 2015 were re-evaluated at follow-up from June 2016 to June 2017. Both patients and their parents underwent a psychological interview and neuropsychological tests (the Leiter International Per

Neuronal histamine and the memory of emotionally salient events.

In this review, we describe the experimental paradigms used in preclinical studies to unravel the histaminergic brain circuits that modulate the formation and retrieval of memories associated with aversive events. Emotionally arousing events, especially bad ones, are remembered more accurately, clearly and for longer periods of time than neutral ones. Maladaptive elaborations of these memories may eventually constitute the basis of psychiatric disorders such as generalized anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder. A better understanding of the role of the hist

Help-Seeking Behaviors Among Active-Duty Military Personnel: Utilization of Chaplains and Other Mental Health Service Providers.

Military chaplains not only conduct religious services, but also provide counseling and spiritual support to military service members, operating as liaisons between soldiers and mental health professionals. In this study, active-duty soldiers (N = 889) reported help-seeking behaviors and mental health. Using logistic regressions, we describe the issues for which soldiers reported seeking help, then outline the characteristics of those who are most likely to seek help from a chaplain. Of the soldiers who sought help from a chaplain within the previous year, 29.9% reported high levels of combat

The longitudinal relationship between worry and disordered eating: Is worry a precursor or consequence of disordered eating?

Worry, the core component of generalized anxiety disorder, is associated with disordered eating. However, it is unclear whether worry is a precursor to disordered eating or whether worry is a consequence of disordered eating (or both). The current study tested if worry prospectively predicted disordered eating symptoms and vice-versa across six months. Young adult women (n=300) completed a measure of worry and disordered eating at Time 1, and two months and six months later. A prospective path model utilizing structural equation modeling investigated if worry predicted disordered eating (and v

Empathy for positive and negative emotions in social anxiety disorder.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is associated with elevated negative and diminished positive affective experience. However, little is known about the way in which individuals with SAD perceive and respond emotionally to the naturally-unfolding negative and positive emotions of others, that is, cognitive empathy and affective empathy, respectively. In the present study, participants with generalized SAD (n = 32) and demographically-matched healthy controls (HCs; n = 32) completed a behavioral empathy task. Cognitive empathy was indexed by the correlation between targets' and participants' continu
