Biomimetic rehabilitation of a structurally compromised endodontically treated tooth using deep margin elevation and polyethylene fiber-reinforced post and core: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Restoration of structurally compromised endodontically treated teeth with extensive coronal destruction and subgingival margins remains a significant restorative challenge. Contemporary biomimetic restorative approaches emphasize preservation of the remaining tooth structure through adhesive reinforcement strategies that improve biomechanical performance while minimizing additional radicular dentin removal. CASE PRESENTATION: This case report describes the biomimetic rehabilitation of a previously root canal-treated maxillary canine with severe coronal destruction and subgingival

Cooperative spatial modelling of hospital compliance with minimum caseload requirements.

BACKGROUND: Minimum caseload requirements (MCRs) ensure medical treatment quality but may negatively affect spatial accessibility to health care. Previous studies optimised the caseload distribution via spatial models, with a focus on balancing spatial concentration and accessibility with centralised case redistribution models. This study seeks to capture hospitals as active participants in MCR policy decisions by incorporating their intentions and motivations regarding MCRs within their spatial context, considering current caseloads and neighbouring hospital distances. METHODS: The study mod

Association of stroke unit certification with process quality in acute ischemic stroke: a registry-based study.

BACKGROUND: Certification of primary and comprehensive Stroke Units (pSU, cSU) was established in Germany to ensure standardized, guideline-adherent and quality-assured care for patients with acute ischemic stroke. However, real-world evidence remains limited that treatment quality is different in certified institutions. In this analysis we focused on potential differences between certified and non-certified institutions concerning various aspects of intravenous thrombolysis. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective registry-based observational analysis of patients with acute ischemic stroke in

Extending the temporal window of arbovirus evolutionary analysis through the recovery of a century-old bandavirus.

Arboviruses evolve under unique ecological constraints imposed by their dual replication cycles in vertebrate and arthropod hosts. This dual-host requirement results in markedly low substitution rates, which complicate molecular clock calibration, particularly when temporal sampling spans only narrow time windows. For RNA arboviruses, wide sampling windows are especially rare due to the intrinsic instability of RNA. Here, we demonstrate that ethanol-preserved museum specimens can help overcome these temporal limitations. We successfully recovered the coding-complete genome of a bandavirus, a n

Predicting parents' HPV vaccination intentions and behaviors across countries and time.

OBJECTIVE: This study compares three models of parental human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination intentions across United States, United Kingdom, and Germany: A model based on the theory of planned behavior (TPB), a model incorporating variables of the health belief model (HBM), and a model that adds factors identified in previous empirical research. We also examine whether these models predict vaccination behavior 1 year later in the United States and United Kingdom. The goal is to provide insights for designing targeted interventions. METHOD: A preregistered online study (February-March 2023)

Outcome of first-line chemotherapy for anaplastic thyroid cancer-a multicenter registry analysis.

CONTEXT: Prognosis of anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC) remains poor. In the absence of immediately actionable molecular alterations, guidelines recommend multimodal therapy including radiotherapy and cytotoxic chemotherapy, but optimal regimens are not established. Many centers in Germany have adopted carboplatin/paclitaxel (CP), with or without radiotherapy, as a preferred first-line approach. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to compare the outcome of patients treated first-line with CP ± radiotherapy vs other cytotoxic chemotherapy regimens in ATC. DESIGN: Retrospective multicenter registry study

Real-world characteristics and invasive disease-free survival of resected patients with HR-positive/HER2-negative early breast cancer: evidence from German population-based cancer registries.

BACKGROUND: Hormone receptor-positive (HR-positive) and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-negative (HER2-negative) tumors are the most prevalent subtypes of early breast cancer (eBC). Despite the generally favorable prognosis, a relevant proportion experiences invasive disease events following surgery. We aimed to describe characteristics, treatment modalities, and survival outcomes of surgically treated patients with HR-positive/HER2-negative eBC in Germany. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study used data from eight population-based clinical cancer registries in Germany. Patients diagnose

Clinical routine care for choriocarcinoma: a descriptive analysis of data from the Baden-Wuerttemberg Cancer Registry (BWCR).

PURPOSE: Choriocarcinoma is a rare tumour. In Germany, due to its low incidence and lack of centralisation in care, only limited data are available on real-world clinical practice. This study aims to analyse tumour characteristics, treatment, and outcomes of patients with gestational choriocarcinoma using data from the Baden-Wuerttemberg Cancer Registry (BWCR), Germany. METHODS: We included patients aged 18-50 years diagnosed with choriocarcinoma between 2015 and 2023, reported to the BWCR. The cases were identified using ICD-O-3 codes 9100/3, 9101/3 and ICD-10-GM code C58.9. Diagnostic and t

When does social support help? Differential effects on the relationship between post-migration stress and internalizing symptoms in young male refugees and immigrant-origin peers from the Middle East.

BACKGROUND: Perceived social support is considered a crucial protective factor for mental health, particularly among marginalized populations. This study investigated the association between perceived social support and internalizing symptoms (depression, anxiety) in young refugees and immigrant-origin peers from the Middle East. It further examined whether social support buffers the adverse impact of post-migration stress on internalizing symptoms. METHODS: The sample consisted of 135 male adolescents and young adults living in Germany, including n = 75 young refugees (primarily from Syria a

Cystic fibrosis and its impact on prognosis in pulmonary embolism.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary embolism (PE) and cystic fibrosis (CF) are both diseases that impact the cardiovascular-pulmonary system. While CF is a rare heterogeneous monogenetic autosomal-recessive inherited multisystem-disease that reduces life-expectancy, PE is a common emergency event with also high morbidity and mortality. We aimed to investigate the impact of CF on prognosis of PE patients. METHODS: The German nationwide inpatient sample was used for this study. All patient-cases of patients with PE in Germany 2005-2020 were included and stratified for CF. RESULTS: Overall, 1,373,084 patient

Reduced hospitalisations for paediatric mild traumatic brain injury: a nationwide observational study.

OBJECTIVE: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is common in childhood, with mild TBI (mTBI) predominating. Germany reports higher hospitalisation rates for paediatric TBI than any other country, suggesting overadmission of mild cases. The study objective was to determine TBI-related hospitalisations in patients <18 years from 2014 to 2020 and describe variability of TBI-related hospitalisations between emergency departments (EDs). DESIGN: Retrospective observational study using the German hospital dataset (GHD) and controlling data from 18 paediatric EDs. SETTING: Cases were identified from the GHD

Aortic valve calcification volume and prognosis in patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: It is unknown whether aortic valve calcium volume, as measured by contrast-enhanced computed tomography angiography (angio-CT), is associated with mortality in patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). We aimed to confirm that contrast-enhanced aortic valve calcium correlates with noncontrast-enhanced calcium score and provides useful prognostic information in patients undergoing TAVI. METHODS: This retrospective observational study included patients from 2 high-volume TAVI centers in Germany, all of whom underwent high-quality angio-CT p
