We report 21 patients with choanal atresia or ocular coloboma or both who have certain other associated anomalies, including congenital heart disease, postnatal growth deficiency, mental retardation and/or CNS anomalies, microphallus and cryptorchidism, and ear anomalies and/or deafness. Facial palsy, micrognathia, cleft palate, and swallowing difficulties were also common. It has not been possible to define a single etiology or a syndrome in these patients. We propose the mnemonic CHARGE (C-coloboma, H-heart disease, A-atresia choanae, R-retarded growth and retarded development and/or CNS ano

Zebrafish (Danio rerio) are increasingly used to investigate spine development, growth, and for studying the etiology of spinal deformity, such as scoliosis. Here, we present a micro-computed tomography-based pipeline for visualizing the zebrafish skeleton. We describe steps for sample preparation, imaging, data management, and processing. We then detail analysis of vertebral and spine morphology using open-source software. This protocol will be useful for scientists using zebrafish to understand spine development and disease. For complete details on the use and execution of this protocol, ple

Thyroid hormones are essential for cellular metabolism, growth, and development. In particular, an adequate supply of thyroid hormones is critical for fetal neurodevelopment. Thyroid hormone tissue activation and inactivation in brain, liver, and other tissues is controlled by the deiodinases through the removal of iodine atoms. Selenium, an essential element critical for deiodinase activity, is sensitive to mercury and, therefore, when its availability is reduced, brain development might be altered. This review addresses the possibility that high exposures to the organometal, methylmercury (M

The preschool years extend from birth up to the age of 4 years and represent the time of most rapid growth and development. During this period the child progresses from the edentulous state to having a fully erupted and functional primary dentition. Also during the preschool years important stages in development of underlying permanent teeth occur. Good management of the preschool child is an excellent practice builder: it leads to a motivated patient, happy to undergo any treatment necessary, and encourages confidence and improves the attitudes to oral health of other members of the family.

A 34-year-old man with acromegaly was observed, and the clinical course and various endocrinological deficiencies occurring before, during and after the development of pituitary apoplexy were evaluated. Following the attack, the patient experienced acute reductions in growth hormone (GH) and other pituitary hormones, adrenohypophyseal insufficiency and transient diabetes insipidus which appeared subsequent to glucocorticoid therapy. The level of growth hormone in serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was measured synchronously, and the respective regressions of GH levels in serum and CSF were ob

Dentoalveolar surgery in children presents general dentists with unique challenges not encountered in adults. The long-term effects that treatments have on these children must always be taken into consideration. A clear understanding of the growth and development of pediatric patients is necessary to correctly identify dental abnormalities.

Tibial dyschondroplasia is a skeletal abnormality characterized by an avascular plug of cartilage in the metaphysis of the long bones of rapidly growing birds. An avascular, thickened growth plate also occurs in vitamin D/calcium-deficient rickets. This research was conducted to evaluate tibial dyschondroplasia and rachitic tissue for factors shown to be important in normal growth plate vascularization. Immunohistochemical analysis demonstrated the presence of vascular endothelial growth factor, its receptor Flk-1, and matrix metalloproteinases MMP-9 and MMP-13 to be present in all tissues exa

Uterine fibroids (leiomyomas) are present in >75% of women and can cause serious morbidity. They are by far the leading cause of hysterectomy. Fibroids are a complex mixture of cells that include fibroblasts and smooth muscle cells. Rich in extracellular matrix, they typically arise through somatic mutations, most commonly MED12. Their lack of growth inhibition and their ability to have facets of malignancy yet be histologically and biologically benign provide opportunities to explore basic processes. To date, the mechanisms responsible for growth and development of leiomyomas are an enigma. T

The contemporary orthodontics should highlight the periodical control of growth and dental development in order to intercept possible disorders in facial growth and tooth eruption. This may allow avoidance or simplification of corrective orthodontic treatment, making it faster and less aggressive. Tooth transposition, a genetically determined eruptive disturbance, presents a relatively low prevalence in the world population and primarily affects maxillary canines and premolars. This paper presents an option for interceptive treatment of bilateral transposition of maxillary canine and premolar

A case of Crohn's disease of the colon onsetting at 17 weeks gestation and observed at the 22 weeks when the disease presented severely and concomitant to serious maternal malnutrition, is reported. The patient was treated with NPT for 4 weeks in association with corticosteroids and sulphasalazine therapy continued to term (36 weeks). The newborn (weight 2480 g, Apgar of 9 at 5') developed moderately serious postnatal icterus resolved with phototherapy; at twelve months he presented normal growth and neurological development conditions. Stress is laid on the fortunate outcome of this gestation

Aspergillus nidulans was grown on media with added amounts of manganese ranging from 0--2.5 muM. Manganese deficiency prevented cleistothecium development, although good vegetative growth was retained. Subsequent analysis of the mycelium produced under Mn2+ deficient growth revealed that alpha-1,3 glucan, the man carbon and energy source for fructification, was virtually absent from the cell wall. Several enzymes related to cell wall composition were investigated. Beta-1,3 glucanase, and very remarkably, alpha-1,3 glucanase reached about the same activity on the Mn2+ deficient and sufficient m

A 48-year-old woman diagnosed with acromegaly 21 years earlier presented at our hospital with a left adrenal tumor. Her medical history included breast cancer, thyroid cancer and an incompletely resected growth hormone (GH)-producing pituitary adenoma. Endocrinological and radiological examinations revealed subclinical adrenal Cushing's syndrome. She subsequently underwent left adrenalectomy, followed by glucocorticoid replacement therapy. Her GH and insulin-like growth factor-1 levels were insufficiently controlled, and pegvisomant was administered in addition to octreotide acetate. Following

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a pluripotent growth and permeability factor that has a broad impact on endothelial cell function. The lung tissue is very rich in this protein; many different lung cells produce VEGF and also respond to VEGF. VEGF is critical for the development of the lung and serves as a maintenance factor during adult life. In addition to the physiological functions of this protein, there is increasing evidence that VEGF also plays a role in several acute and chronic lung diseases, such as acute lung injury, severe pulmonary hypertension, and emphysema. Here we

BACKGROUND: Apligraf is a bioengineered skin product composed of neonatal fibroblasts and keratinocytes. The FDA has approved Apligraf for the treatment of chronic venous ulcers and diabetic ulcers.
OBJECTIVE: We review the development of bioengineered skin, examine the cellular activities of various growth factors that may facilitate wound healing, and discuss the results of clinical trials with a particular construct, Apligraf, as proof of principle.
CONCLUSION: Bioengineered skin acts as a "smart" delivery system for growth factors and other stimulatory substances. Not only does it presen

We report on a girl with growth and mental retardation, peculiar face with ptosis, epicanthus, broad nasal bridge, low-set and abnormal ears, cleft uvula, congenital heart defect, and anal atresia. A similar condition was reported previously by Wiedemann et al. [1982: An atlas of characteristic syndromes: a visual aid to diagnosis, 2nd ed. p 114-115]. We confirm the existence of this condition that, although similar to Ohdo syndrome, seems to be an independent clinical entity. We propose that, based on the principal clinical manifestations, this condition should be identified with the acronym

A study of 60 children with thoracic and lumbar spine injuries indicates that the child's response to trauma is unique. It is concluded that the potential for growth and development and the presence of healthy tissues separate these injuries from comparable injuries in adults. The epiphyseal growth partly or completely restores vertebral body height, leads to a mild spinal deformity in stable injuries, and can contribute to rapidly progressive spinal deformity in unstable injuries with or without paralysis. Healthy intervertebral discs account for the multiple compression fractures and lack of

Serum somatomedin A, determined by radioreceptor assay in 47 children with Perthes' disease, was significantly reduced as compared to normal children of the same age. Nine children underwent the 1-Dopa tolerance tests to evoke growth hormone release; a normal response was found in eight. Patients with Perthes' disease tend to be short in stature with "disproportionate skeletal growth" of the limbs; growth is less in the distal than in the proximal extremities. The low serum levels of somatomedin A suggest some growth disturbance during the development of Perthes' disease.

Iron is a trace element necessary for cell growth, development, and cellular homeostasis, but insufficient or excessive level of iron is toxic. Intracellularly, sufficient amounts of iron are required for mitochondria (the center of iron utilization) to maintain their normal physiologic function. Iron deficiency impairs mitochondrial metabolism and respiratory activity, while mitochondrial iron overload promotes ROS production during mitochondrial electron transport, thus promoting potential disease development. This review provides an overview of iron homeostasis, mitochondrial iron metabolis

We describe the isolation of zebrafish growth factor independent 1 (gfi1) and present an analysis of its pattern of expression during early development. As with its murine homologue, gfi1 expression is detected in the ganglion cells of the neural retina and in developing hair cells of the ear. In keeping with a role in the development of sensory hair cells, gfi1 is also expressed in neuromasts of the anterior and posterior lateral line system. Finally, gfi1 is expressed in the developing epithalamus in the dorsal diencephalon where its transcription is restricted to the parapineal.

Although traditional models of carcinogenesis have largely focused on neoplastic cells, converging data have revealed the importance of non-neoplastic stromal cells in influencing tumor growth and progression. Leveraging a genetically engineered mouse model of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1)-associated optic glioma, we now demonstrate that stromal microglia express the CX3CR1 chemokine receptor, such that reduced CX3CR1 expression decreases optic nerve microglia. Moreover, genetic reduction of Cx3cr1 expression in Nf1 optic glioma mice delays optic glioma formation. Coupled with previous findin
