Substance Use among Belgian Higher Education Students before and during the First Wave of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic prompted many countries to issue far-reaching policy measures that may have led to increased substance use. Higher education students may have been disproportionally affected due to the rearrangement of educational life and their susceptibility to psychosocial distress and substance use. The current study examined associations between pandemic-related stressors, psychosocial distress, and self-reported alcohol, tobacco, and cannabis use before and during the first wave of the pandemic. Data were collected in Belgium as part of the COVID-19 International Student Well-being

Racial resentment and support for decriminalization of drug possession in the United States.

Drug criminalization creates significant barriers to prevention and treatment of substance use disorders and racial equity objectives, and removal of criminal penalties for drug possession is increasingly being endorsed by health and justice advocates. We present empirical data estimating the share of U.S. adults who support eliminating criminal penalties for possession of all illicit drugs, and examine factors associated with public support. Data from the Johns Hopkins COVID-19 Civic Life and Public Health Survey, a probability-based nationally representative sample of 1222 U.S. adults, was c

Establishing a System of Care for Severe and Refractory Dual Disorder in the State of Hawai'i.

Dual disorder is the diagnosis of both substance use disorder and a psychiatric disorder in the same individual. This paper focuses on the cohort of persons with severe and refractory dual disorders (SRDD). This cohort exhibits disproportionately high use of emergency services, poor response to existing care resources, high risk of homelessness, and elevated risk of violent deaths. Clarifying the unique and problematic aspects of SRDD can provide direction for intervention and policy within the system of care in Hawai'i. Data regarding the prevalence of dual disorder in Hawai'i are reviewed al

Urgent Need for Adolescent Physical Activity Policies and Promotion: Lessons from "Jeeluna".

Physical inactivity is a growing concern in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) and globally. Data on physical activity (PA) trends, barriers, and facilitators among adolescents in KSA are scarce. This study aims to identify PA trends amongst adolescents in KSA and associated health and lifestyle behaviors. Data from "Jeeluna", a national study in KSA involving around 12,500 adolescents, were utilized. School students were invited to participate, and a multistage sampling procedure was used. Data collection included a self-administered questionnaire, anthropometric measurements, and blood sampling.

Hepatitis C: The beginning of the end-key elements for successful European and national strategies to eliminate HCV in Europe.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a major public health problem in the European Union (EU). An estimated 5.6 million Europeans are chronically infected with a wide range of variation in prevalence across European Union countries. Although HCV continues to spread as a largely "silent pandemic," its elimination is made possible through the availability of the new antiviral drugs and the implementation of prevention practices. On 17 February 2016, the Hepatitis B & C Public Policy Association held the first EU HCV Policy Summit in Brussels. This summit was an historic event as it was the first

Control and management of congenital Chagas disease in Europe and other non-endemic countries: current policies and practices.

OBJECTIVES: Identifying pregnant women infected with Trypanosoma cruzi is one of the major challenges for preventing and controlling Chagas disease (CD) in non-endemic countries. The aim of this paper was to perform a policy evaluation of the current practices of congenital Chagas disease (CCD) control in non-endemic countries and to propose specific targets for enhanced interventions to tackle this emerging health problem outside the endemic areas of Latin America. METHODS: We conducted a mixed method review of CCD policy strategies by searching the literature in the PubMed, Google Scholar a

Provider costs for prevention and treatment of cardiovascular and related conditions in low- and middle-income countries: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and CVD risk conditions is rapidly increasing in low- and middle-income countries, where health systems are generally ill-equipped to manage chronic disease. Policy makers need an understanding of the magnitude and drivers of the costs of cardiovascular disease related conditions to make decisions on how to allocate limited health resources. METHODS: We undertook a systematic review of the published literature on provider-incurred costs of treatment for cardiovascular diseases and risk conditions in low- and middle-income countries. Serum HDL-C level of Iranian adults: results from sixth national Surveillance of Risk Factors of Non-Communicable Disease.

BACKGROUND: Reduced level of high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) is shown to be in association with the risk of coronary artery disease (CAD), metabolic syndrome, and chronic renal disease. Lack of a national representative research for assessing the level of HDL-C among Iranian adults, which is essential for health policy makers, was the motivation for this study. METHODS: HDL-C levels of 4,803 Iranian adults aged 25-64 years old were measured by sixth national Surveillance of Risk Factors of Non-Communicable Disease (SuRFNCD) in 2011. Data were entered into STATA 12 software and we

Cost effectiveness and quality of life in knee arthroplasty.

Few studies quantitate the cost of a quality well being as produced by arthroplasty surgery. The objective was to use the Quality of Well Being Index to calculate the cost per quality of well year in knee arthroplasty surgery. The difference in Quality of Well Being Index scores before and after the intervention was calculated and multiplied by the patient's life expectancy. The procedure cost was divided by this quantity resulting in the cost of a quality well year. One hundred patients underwent a primary knee arthroplasty. There were 30 males (average age, 62 years old) and 70 females (aver

Thalassemia in Iraq: Time to Reform Policy.

Thalassemia is one of the most common hemoglobinopathies worldwide, particularly within the Middle Eastern demographics. Despite the existence of a nationwide screening program in Iraq and a decline in disease incidence, its optimal effectiveness remains uncertain, as β-thalassemia prevalence continues to rise. This paper seeks to evaluate the weaknesses of the thalassemia screening program in Iraq. It also suggests actionable strategies for policy change to further reduce disease incidence. Additionally, the discussed concepts can be applicable to other regions facing a similar burden. Factor

Towards differentiated governance: A typology and differentiated governance framework for county-level traditional Chinese medicine hospitals in China.

Public county-level Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) hospitals are critical for integrating traditional and modern medicine, yet their heterogeneous development potential hinders policy implementation. Using Zhejiang Province as a case and an integrated Resource Dependence-Complex Systems framework, this study employed a mixed-methods design-cluster analysis of 78 county-level units and in-depth interviews with 24 key stakeholders-to identify four developmental archetypes. Findings reveal that hospital potential is an 'emergent property' stemming from the interplay between external resource

Politics, religion and gender equality in contemporary Mexico: women's sexuality and reproductive rights in a contested secular state.

This article explores the complexities of the interaction between politics, religion and gender equality in contemporary Mexico, by analysing recent developments in public debate, legal changes and implementation of government policies in two areas: 1) the inclusion of emergency contraception in public health services in 2004; and 2) the decriminalisation of abortion in Mexico City in 2008, which was followed by a massive campaign to re-criminalise abortion in the federal states. Three main findings emerge from our analysis: first, that women's sexual and reproductive autonomy has become an is

New strategies for providing hormonal contraception in developing countries.

Even with progress in increasing access to effective contraception over the past decades, and the growing range of contraceptive methods available on the market, women in developing countries continue to report an unmet need for family planning. This constraint continues to challenge reproductive health policies and programs, while the momentum of population growth and the young age structure in developing countries leads to larger numbers of potential contraceptive users and increasing global demand in contraceptive markets. Of late, there is a renewed focus on increasing access to long-actin

Borrowing, adapting, and learning the practices of smallpox: notes from colonial Goa.

In this article I will address colonial state policies toward smallpox in nineteenth-century Goa. The picture that emerges from the analysis of health services documents suggests a broad variety of coexisting practices. While the actions of some of the Portuguese head physicians epitomized the conflict between state-sponsored vaccination policies and local preferences for smallpox inoculation, others showed sympathy for and developed arguments in favor of inoculation as practiced by indigenous experts. Still others observed the existence among the population of hybrid practices combining eleme

Spatial disparities in impoverishing effects of out-of-pocket health payments in Malawi.

BACKGROUND: Out-of-pocket health payments as a means of financing health services are a cause of concern among households in low and middle-income countries. They prevent households from accessing health care services, can disrupt households' living standards by reducing consumption of other basic needs and push households into poverty. Previous studies have reported geographical variations in impoverishing effects of out-of-pocket health payments. Yet, we know relatively little about spatial effects on impoverishing effects of health payments. OBJECTIVE: This paper assesses the factors assoc

Malaria policies versus practices, a reality check from Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

BACKGROUND: Artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) following a confirmed parasitological diagnosis is recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Congolese National Malaria Control Program (NMCP). However, commitment and competence of all stakeholders (patients, medical professionals, governments and funders) is required to achieve effective case management and secure the "useful therapeutic life" of the recommended drugs. The health seeking behaviour of patients and health care professionals' practices for malaria management were assessed. METHODS: This was an observation

Violence exposure and depression in Chinese adolescents: Mediation by health-risk behaviors and alleviation by family health.

As the social environment evolves, adolescents face increasing exposure to violence and psychological stress. Adolescent violence is a global public health issue that not only severely impacts their mental health but also profoundly affects their long-term well-being. Fewer studies have explored the mediating role of health-risk behaviors in the association between violence and depressive symptoms among adolescents, particularly the moderating effect of family health. Using cross-sectional data from the 2021 Psychological and Behavioral Investigation of Chinese Residents (PBICR) involving 1065

Wildlife health in the One Health era: lessons from a 200-year institutional case study.

The One Health framework has drawn increasing attention to the interdependence of human, animal and environmental health. In this context, wildlife health has become more visible, yet its role remains inconsistently defined and is often framed primarily in terms of wildlife as a source of pathogens of concern to humans and domestic animals. This perspective reflects only a limited subset of the reasons why different sectors of society value healthy wildlife. Marking the 200-year anniversary of the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), a prominent institution in the emergence and development of w
