Lesions consistent with skeletal tuberculosis were found in 13 individuals from an early medieval skeletal sample from Courroux (Switzerland). One case of Pott's disease as well as lytic lesions in vertebrae and joints, rib lesions and endocranial new bone formation were identified. Three individuals with lesions and one without were tested for the presence of Myobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) ancient DNA (aDNA), and in two cases, evidence for MTBC aDNA was detected. Osteoclast formation is central to bone metabolism, occurring when myelomonocytic progenitors are stimulated by membrane-bound receptor activator of NFκB ligand (RANKL) on osteoblasts. Chickenpox is an infectious disease common in children, which in most cases is benign toward the self-limited resolution. There are, however, serious systemic and musculoskeletal complications, especially in patients with immunosuppression. Particle disease is a loss of bone that commonly occurs about five years after arthroplasty. The cause is secondary to microabrasive wear and shedding of any portion of the prosthesis, and the microscopic foreign bodies activate inflammation which can lead to pain. This report describes the imaging findings of an 80-year-old female with particle disease detected with 18F-fluoride PET/CT.

Metastatic renal cell cancer is not exceptional in kidney cancer (30% of patients with kidneyl cancer). Its prognosis is particularly severe. However, sciatic neuralgia (sciatica) remains an exceptional revealing clinical sign of this disease. The authors report the case of a patient admitted with right sciatica as chief complain, leading to the discovery of a renal cell carcinoma. PURPOSE: To assess the value of a direct transoral approach to C2 for interventional procedures.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A transoral approach to C2 was used in 4 patients (9-64 year old) with lytic lesion of the C2 vertebra and/or base of the odontoid over a 10 year period. Three patients underwent biopsy and 1 patient underwent vertebroplasty using biplane fluoroscopy. All procedures were performed under general anesthesia using a 13G needle directly introduced in the C2 vertebra through the posterior pharyngeal wall.

A case report of a metastatic caused loosening of a total hip arthroplasty one year after primary implantation is presented. A primary cancer was unknown at surgery. Due to suspected low-grade infection, a revision surgery was performed and the diagnosis of a metastatically caused loosening could be made. A bronchial carcinoma was identified as primary cancer. In spite of the rare incidence of the described metastatic loosening, the significance of a differential diagnostic strategy and the importance of a histological examination in revision surgery is depicted.

Using a titanium alloy femoral prosthesis (STH Zimmer) and an ultra high molecular weight polyethylene acetabular cup with a posterior surgical approach to the hip joint, 237 consecutive total hip arthroplasties in 215 patients were performed between December 1975 and May 1977. The preliminary results and early postoperative complications suggest that this system can be considered an alternative to total hip arthroplasty using other materials and surgical approaches.
