Restructuring Biologically Assembled Binding Protein-Biopolymer Conjugates toward Advanced Materials.

Bacterial cell factories have been successfully engineered to efficiently assemble spherical polyhydroxybutyrate inclusions coated with functional proteins of interest. In these submicrometer-sized core-shell assemblies, proteins are bioconjugated to the polymer core, enabling bioengineering for uses as bioseparation resins, enzyme carriers, diagnostic reagents, and particulate vaccines. Here, we explore whether these functional protein-polymer assemblies could be restructured via dissolution and subsequent precipitation while retaining the functionality of the conjugated protein. Polymer core

Novel Rhinological Application of Polylactic Acid-An In Vitro Study.

A novel approach to the treatment of sinusitis is the use of nasal stents. The stent is loaded with a corticosteroid, which prevents complications in the wound-healing process. The design is such that it will prevent the sinus from closing again. The stent is 3D printed using a fused deposition modeling printer, which enhances the customization. The polymer utilized for the purpose of 3D printing is polylactic acid (PLA). The compatibility between the drugs and polymers is confirmed by FT-IR and DSC. The drug is loaded onto the polymer by soaking the stent in the drug's solvent, known as the s

Mechanically Robust, Recyclable, and Self-Healing Polyimine Networks.

To achieve energy saving and emission reduction goals, recyclable and healable thermoset materials are highly attractive. Polymer copolymerization has been proven to be a critical strategy for preparing high-performance polymeric materials. However, it remains a huge challenge to develop high-performance recyclable and healable thermoset materials. Here, polyimine dynamic networks based on two monomers with bulky pendant groups, which not only displayed mechanical properties higher than the strong and tough polymers, e.g., polycarbonate, but also excellent self-repairing capability and recycla

Depletion attractions drive bacterial capture on both non-fouling and adhesive surfaces, enhancing cell orientation.

Depletion attractions, occurring between surfaces immersed in a polymer solution, drive bacteria adhesion to a variety of surfaces. The latter include the surfaces of non-fouling coatings such as hydrated polyethylene glycol (PEG) layers but also, as demonstrated in this work, surfaces that are bacteria-adhesive, such as that of glass. Employing a flagella free E. coli strain, we demonstrate that cell adhesion on glass is enhanced by dissolved polyethylene oxide (PEO), exhibiting a faster rate and greater numbers of captured cells compared with the slower capture of the same cells on glass fro

Conditions for Shake-Gel Formation: The Relationship between the Size of Poly(Ethylene Oxide) and the Distance between Silica Particles.

Colloidal silica suspensions are widely used in many fields, including environmental restoration, oil drilling, and food and medical industries. To control the rheological property of suspensions, poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) polymers are often used. Under specific conditions, the silica-PEO suspension can create a phenomenon called a shake-gel. Previous works discussed the conditions necessary to form a shake-gel and suggested that the bridging effect of the polymer is one of the important mechanisms for shake-gel formation. However, we noted that the influence of PEO size compared to the separ

Characteristics and influencing factors of airborne microplastics in nail salons.

Airborne microplastic particles (MPs) are emerging contaminants. Although some studies have investigated the characteristics of indoor MPs in homes or offices, information regarding MPs in nail salons with potentially higher MP pollution is unavailable. In this study, we collected indoor and outdoor air samples from nail salons to analyze the concentrations, physical characteristics, and polymers of MPs and further assessed the exposure through inhalation and influencing factors. Our data displayed that the average indoor MP concentration was 46 ± 55 MPs/m3. The estimated average annual exposu

Combination of structure-performance and shape-performance relationships for better biphasic release in electrospun Janus fibers.

In nature, the combination of composition, structure, and shape determines the matter's functional performance to a large extent. Inspired by which, two electrospun Janus nanofiber formulations were created using side-by-side electrospinning in this work. Tamoxifen citrate (TAM) was used as a model drug and ethyl cellulose (EC) and polyvinylpyrrolidone K60 (PVP) as the polymer carrier matrices. The fibers have linear cylindrical morphologies and distinct Janus structures by scanning electron microscopy. One side of the fibers took a round shape, while the other was crescent-shaped. The drug wa

An upgraded and universal strategy to reinforce chitosan/polyvinylpyrrolidone film by incorporating active silica nanorods derived from natural palygorskite.

Active silica nanorod (OPal) was prepared from natural palygorskite (RPal) using an updated acid leaching route, and then the effect of RPal and OPal as nano-filler on the network structure, mechanical, thermal and anti-aging properties of chitosan/polyvinylpyrrolidone (CS/PVP) films was studied comparatively. It was revealed that OPal had a better dispersibility than RPal in CS/PVP substrate, and its incorporation improved the mechanical properties and thermal stability of the films significantly. The optimal composite film containing OPal shows the maximum tensile strength of 27.53 MPa (only

Two types of core/shell fibers based on carboxymethyl chitosan and Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose with self-assembled liposome for buccal delivery of carvedilol across TR146 cell culture and porcine buccal mucosa.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Two novel core-shell fibers which could self-assemble liposome were fabricated based on bioadhesive polymer carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) and Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Na), separately. The shell layers were CMCS/PVA and CMC-Na/PVA, respectively, and the core layer was mixture of PVP, Phospholipids (PC) and Carvedilol (Car). The diameter distribution and core/shell structure were examined by SEM and CLSM. FTIR and XRD were also used to characterize the fiber. Self-assembled liposome was observed by TEM, and other parameters like drug encapsulation efficiency was also determined. In vi

Spatiotemporal variations of contact stress between liquid-crystal films and fibroblasts Guide cell fate and skin regeneration.

The inductions of both the mechanical microenvironment on cell behaviour and the polymeric scaffold on tissue regeneration have been well-proved. This study is aimed to investigate the possibility of guiding cell fate and tissue regeneration by the spatiotemporal controlling of contact stress between matrix materials and cells and to elucidate the mechanisms underlying. A series liquid crystal polymers of cholesteryl-oligo(lactic acid) (CLA) and an amorphous polymer of poly(lactic acid) were used as the growth substrates for fibroblast and skin tissue regeneration. Evaluation of the Antimicrobial Activity of Cationic Peptides Loaded in Surface-Modified Nanoliposomes against Foodborne Bacteria.

Bacteria are a common group of foodborne pathogens presenting public health issues with a large economic burden for the food industry. Our work focused on a solution to this problem by evaluating antibiotic activity against two bacteria (Listeria monocytogenes and Escherichia coli) of relevance in the field of foodstuffs. We used two approaches: (i) structural modification of the antimicrobial peptides and (ii) nano-vehiculisation of the modified peptides into polymer-coated liposomes. To achieve this, two antimicrobial peptides, herein named 'peptide +2' and 'peptide +5' were synthesised usin

Fiber Bragg Gratings in CYTOP Fibers Embedded in a 3D-Printed Flexible Support for Assessment of Human⁻Robot Interaction Forces.

We developed a flexible support with embedded polymer optical fiber (POF) sensors for the assessment of human⁻robot interaction forces. The supports were fabricated with a three-dimensional (3D) printer, where an acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) rigid structure was used in the region of the support in which the exoskeleton was attached, whereas a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) flexible structure was printed in the region where the users placed their legs. In addition, fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs), inscribed in low-loss, cyclic, transparent, optical polymer (CYTOP) using the direct-write,

The effect of ozone gas sterilization on the properties and cell compatibility of electrospun polycaprolactone scaffolds.

The growing area of tissue engineering has the potential to alleviate the shortage of tissues and organs for transplantation, and electrospun biomaterial scaffolds are extremely promising devices for translating engineered tissues into a clinical setting. However, to be utilized in this capacity, these medical devices need to be sterile. Traditional methods of sterilization are not always suitable for biomaterials, especially as many commonly used biomedical polymers are sensitive to chemical-, thermal- or radiation-induced damage. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the sui
