Treating incarcerated women: gender matters.

Research on incarcerated women has shown they have a high degree of comorbid psychopathology, including substance dependence, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), antisocial personality disorder (ASPD), and major depression. Incarcerated women differ from their community peers by having more symptoms related to addiction, ASPD, and PTSD. At the same time, incarcerated women are every bit as likely as incarcerated men to be dependent on drugs and almost as likely to be dependent on alcohol. What emerges is a picture of the incarcerated woman far more likely to have had traumatic experiences, i

A prospective follow-up study of alcoholic violent offenders and fire setters.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated biochemical and family variables and predictors of recidivism among forensic psychiatric patients who had committed violent offenses or set fires. METHODS: One hundred fourteen male alcoholic violent offenders and fire setters were followed up for an average of 4.5 years after release from prison. At the beginning of their incarceration, the first half of the offenders were administered clinical diagnostic interviews, whereas the latter half received the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III (SCID) that was blind rated. A structured family history quest

Toward Equity in Prescribing Buprenorphine in the New Jersey Department of Corrections.

Medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD), including buprenorphine, are effective for the treatment of incarcerated persons (IPs) with opioid use disorder (OUD). Racial disparities in such prescribing have been researched in both community and correctional settings. We describe a performance improvement (PI) project to reduce the disparities in prescribing buprenorphine in the New Jersey Department of Corrections that involved public-facing educational efforts directed toward both prescribers and potential patients. Using reports designed to collect baseline and follow-up summary data from th

Family incarceration and barriers to mental health care among low-income US veterans.

BACKGROUND: Family member incarceration is a risk factor for mental health challenges. However, less research has investigated the relationship between family member incarceration and barriers to mental health services. METHODS: Data were drawn from the 2023 National Veteran Homeless and Other Poverty Experiences (NV-HOPE) Survey, a nationally representative sample of US veterans living at or below 300 % of the federal poverty level (N = 978). Logistic regression models were used to examine the association between family member incarceration and self-reported barriers to mental health care, a

Disparities in Prostate Cancer-Specific Mortality in Incarcerated vs Nonincarcerated Patients in Michigan: A Statewide Retrospective Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: With rising incarceration and cancer diagnosis rates in the United States, understanding the relationship between incarceration status and cancer outcomes is critical. Our study examined prostate cancer (PCa)-specific mortality (PCSM) disparities in incarcerated patients (IP) vs nonincarcerated patients (NP) in Michigan. METHODS: The Michigan Department of Health & Human Services Database was screened for PCa (histology = 8140)-diagnosed patients between 2004 and 2015. IP and NP were cross-analyzed with demographic and clinical covariates. The cumulative incidence function and c

Treatment initiations and opioid overdoses among recently incarcerated people after adoption of the take-home methadone policy.

Opioid overdose is the leading cause of death among recently incarcerated people. Take-home methadone flexibilities adopted at the COVID-19 pandemic's outset may have facilitated opioid use disorder treatment initiations and prevented opioid overdoses for this population. These flexibilities may have particularly enhanced treatment initiations for rural residents, given relaxed in-person methadone treatment requirements. Leveraging the Massachusetts Department of Public Health's Public Health Data Warehouse, we assessed whether the Massachusetts take-home methadone policy was associated with c

Linking Criminal Justice-Involved Individuals to HIV Preexposure Prophylaxis: A Qualitative Analysis of Multiple Stakeholder Perspectives.

ObjectiveAlthough incarcerated individuals are at disproportionately higher HIV risk compared to the general US population, few jails offer linkage to preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP). We explored stakeholder perspectives about barriers and facilitators to PrEP for justice-involved individuals.MethodsSemi-structured interviews were conducted with three stakeholder groups in Dallas County, Texas: justice-involved individuals (n = 8), County Jail staff (n = 9), and employees of local community organizations that provide PrEP services (n = 9). Transcripts were analyzed using a combined deductive an

Psychosocial, Behavioral, and HIV-Related Health Among Men Living with HIV Who Have a History of Incarceration.

Incarceration is intricately linked with the HIV epidemic, with incarcerated individuals exhibiting HIV prevalence rates three times higher than the general population. We used baseline data from the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study (MACS)/Women's Interagency HIV Study (WIHS) Combined Cohort Study (MWCCS) to describe select health outcomes among men living with HIV (MWH) who have never been incarcerated and with a history of lifetime incarceration, specifically recent (within the past-year) and multiple incarcerations. Participants (N = 526) completed quantitative assessments of self-reported inc

Lifetime HIV testing among three samples of adults with histories of incarceration in Southern California.

ABSTRACTJustice-impacted persons may inconsistently access HIV testing. This cross-sectional secondary analysis investigates lifetime HIV testing prevalence among adults with prior histories of incarceration in Southern California, United States, participating in health-focused programming (n = 3 studies). Self-reported demographic and lifetime HIV testing data were collected between 2017-2023; descriptive analyses were conducted. Across the three samples, at least 74% of participants were male; Latino and African American individuals accounted for nearly two-thirds of participants. Lifetime H

Latine perspectives on the impact of family, perceptions of medication, health systems, incarceration, and housing on accessing opioid agonist therapy: A thematic analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Opioid-related overdose deaths rates among Latine individuals are increasing rapidly and, in Massachusetts, have exceeded rates among non-Hispanic White individuals. Yet Latine individuals are less likely to receive opioid agonist therapies (OAT) methadone and buprenorphine, which have been demonstrated to prevent opioid deaths. Amid climbing Latine overdose rates, we lack qualitative data from Spanish-speaking people who use opioids about their views on and access to OAT. In this paper, we sought to assess variables affecting Latine individuals' initiation of OAT. METHODS: We c

Exploring substance misuse behaviors among black girls in detention: Intersections of trauma, sex, and age.

High risk substance misuse, trauma and gang involvement are prevalent in adolescents and often occur with youth involved with the youth punishment system. Evidence suggests that system involvement is related to trauma histories, substance misuse, as well as gang involvement. This study investigated the associations between individual and peer factors and their relationship to problem drug and alcohol use among Black girls involved with the youth punishment system. Data were collected from 188 Black girls in detention at baseline, as well as 3 and 6 month follow up periods. Measures assessed we

Observed Outcomes: An Approach to Calculate the Optimum Number of Psychiatric Beds.

The number of psychiatric beds, in most developed countries, has decreased progressively since the late 1950s. Many clinicians believe that this reduction has gone too far. But how can we determine the number of psychiatric beds a mental health system needs? While the population health approach has advantages over the normative approach, it makes assumptions about optimal and minimum duration of hospitalization required for various psychiatric disorders. In this paper, we describe a naturalistic approach that estimates the required number of psychiatric beds by comparing the bed levels at whic
