Antifibrotic and Anti-Inflammatory Actions of α-Melanocytic Hormone: New Roles for an Old Player.

The melanocortin system encompasses melanocortin peptides, five receptors, and two endogenous antagonists. Besides pigmentary effects generated by α-Melanocytic Hormone (α-MSH), new physiologic roles in sexual activity, exocrine secretion, energy homeostasis, as well as immunomodulatory actions, exerted by melanocortins, have been described recently. Among the most common and burdensome consequences of chronic inflammation is the development of fibrosis. Depending on the regenerative capacity of the affected tissue and the quality of the inflammatory response, the outcome is not always perfect

Nutrient sensor signaling pathways and cellular stress in fetal growth restriction.

Fetal growth restriction is one of the most common obstetrical complications resulting in significant perinatal morbidity and mortality. The most frequent etiology of human singleton fetal growth restriction is placental insufficiency, which occurs secondary to reduced utero-placental perfusion, abnormal placentation, impaired trophoblast invasion and spiral artery remodeling, resulting in altered nutrient and oxygen transport. Two nutrient-sensing proteins involved in placental development and glucose and amino acid transport are mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) and O-linked N-acetylglu

Risk and Resilience Factors for Psychobehavioral Symptom Trajectories Among Child Welfare-Involved Youth.

The primary aim of the study was to investigate the development of psychobehavioral symptoms (internalizing, externalizing, and posttraumatic stress [PTS]) of child welfare-involved adolescents over a 3-year period and to identify predictors of the trajectories. Using three waves of data from the National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being (NSCAW-II), latent growth curve modeling was conducted on a sample of 350 adolescents who were between 11 and 13 years of age at baseline. Findings indicated that adolescents' internalizing symptoms decreased over time, whereas externalizing symptoms

Zika in the Americas, year 2: What have we learned? What gaps remain? A report from the Global Virus Network.

In response to the outbreak of Zika virus (ZIKV) infection in the Western Hemisphere and the recognition of a causal association with fetal malformations, the Global Virus Network (GVN) assembled an international taskforce of virologists to promote basic research, recommend public health measures and encourage the rapid development of vaccines, antiviral therapies and new diagnostic tests. In this article, taskforce members and other experts review what has been learned about ZIKV-induced disease in humans, its modes of transmission and the cause and nature of associated congenital manifestati

Effect of LPS treatment on tyrosine hydroxylase expression and Parkinson-like behaviors.

Puberty is a critical period of development during which the brain undergoes reorganizing and remodeling. Exposure to stress during this period is thought to interfere with normal brain development and increase susceptibility to mental illnesses. In female mice, pubertal exposure to lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a bacterial endotoxin, has been shown to alter sexual, anxiety-like, and depression-like behaviors and cognition in an enduring manner. However, the mechanisms underlying these effects remain unknown. The present study examined age and sex difference in tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) expression

Over-expression of DMRT1 induces the male pathway in embryonic chicken gonads.

DMRT1 encodes a conserved transcription factor with an essential role in gonadal function. In the chicken, DMRT1 in located on the Z sex chromosome and is currently the best candidate master regulator of avian gonadal sex differentiation. We previously showed that knockdown of DMRT1 expression during the period of sexual differentiation induces feminisation of male embryonic chicken gonads. This gene is therefore necessary for proper testis development in the chicken. However, whether it is sufficient to induce testicular differentiation has remained unresolved. We show here that over-expressi

In vivo transmission blocking activities of artesunate on the avian malaria parasite Plasmodium gallinaceum.

Infection and transmission of the avian malaria parasite Plasmodium gallinaceum in domestic chickens is associated with high economic burden and presents a major challenge to poultry industry in South East Asia. Development of drugs targeting both asexual blood stage parasites and sexual stages of the avian malarias will be beneficial for malaria treatment and eradication. However, current drugs recommended for treatment of the avian malaria parasites target specifically the asexual blood stage parasites, but have little or no impact to the gametocytes, the major target for development of tran

Exploring the interaction between childhood maltreatment and temperamental traits on the severity of borderline personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment and temperamental traits play a role in the development of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). The aim of the present study was to assess the involvement and the interrelationship of both factors in the clinical severity of BPD. METHOD: The self-reported history of childhood trauma, psychobiological temperamental traits, and severity of BPD symptoms were evaluated in 130 subjects with BPD. RESULTS: Approximately 70% of the sample reported some form of abuse or neglect. Childhood maltreatment inversely correlated with sociability, but no correlation was o

Coordinating growth and maturation - insights from Drosophila.

Adult body size in higher animals is dependent on the amount of growth that occurs during the juvenile stage. The duration of juvenile development, therefore, must be flexible and responsive to environmental conditions. When immature animals experience environmental stresses such as malnutrition or disease, maturation can be delayed until conditions improve and normal growth can resume. In contrast, when animals are raised under ideal conditions that promote rapid growth, internal checkpoints ensure that maturation does not occur until juvenile development is complete. Although the mechanisms

Older Latina women and HIV/AIDS: an examination of sexuality and culture as they relate to risk and protective factors.

Older Latina women are one of the least studied American demographic groups with regard to social, health, or sexual behavior. This could leave social workers and other geriatric professionals unprepared for dealing with HIV/AIDS in this population. Currently, older Latina women are one of the fastest growing groups of new AIDS cases. Twenty percent of all women ever diagnosed with the disease are Latina and 5.5% of Latinas infected with the virus are older. The number of diagnosed infections is increasing in older women, including Latinas, in spite of recent declines in infection rates with y

Predicting negative life outcomes from early aggressive-disruptive behavior trajectories: gender differences in maladaptation across life domains.

Transactional theories of development suggest that displaying high levels of antisocial behavior early in life and persistently over time causes disruption in multiple life domains, which in turn places individuals at risk for negative life outcomes. We used longitudinal data from 1,137 primarily African American urban youth (49.1% female) to determine whether different trajectories of aggressive and disruptive behavior problems were associated with a range of negative life outcomes in young adulthood. General growth mixture modeling was used to classify the youths' patterns of aggressive-disr

Testosterone, social and sexual behavior of perinatally and lifelong calorie restricted offspring.

Calorie restriction (CR) during sensitive perinatal periods has consistently been demonstrated to alter the development of a variety of physiological systems, which consequently affect behavior. This study compared the social behavior and sexual behavior of the adult male offspring of mothers administered a 25% CR at one of four times in the perinatal period: a brief period preconception, during gestation, during lactation, or a lifelong restriction (beginning at conception and continuing throughout life). Levels of serum testosterone were also determined in these animals. Social interaction i

Male pubertal development and the role of androgen therapy.

In boys, the hormonal changes that accompany normal puberty are well defined, as are the physical signs of pubertal development and the kinetics of the growth spurt. Most androgens are derived from the testes, although adrenal androgens may also contribute; testosterone can also be aromatized to estrogen to exert important effects during puberty. Androgens, but especially their conversion to estrogens by aromatase, have a major role in the dramatic changes in linear growth, secondary sexual characteristics, and changes to bone, muscle and fat distribution that occur during puberty. Androgen th
