The reported number of registered leprosy patients worldwide declined with the introduction of multidrug therapy. However, the emergence of rifampicin resistance in leprosy patients engenders difficulties for an individual patient, and its dissemination could pose a threat to leprosy control. This study reports an elderly patient who was diagnosed with rifampicin-resistant lepromatous leprosy. This case indicates that inadequate treatment and poor compliance may eventually result in rifampicin resistance in Mycobacterium leprae and clinical relapse.

Aneurysm of the left atrial appendage is extremely rare, and afflicted patients most commonly present with atrial tachyarrhythmia or thromboembolism. For these patients, resection of the aneurysm is the recommended and preferred therapy. We present the case of a 57-year-old woman who was found incidentally to have a large aneurysm of the left atrial appendage presenting as atrial fibrillation. After surgical intervention with resection of the aneurysm and a Cox maze III procedure, the patient recovered and was discharged in sinus rhythm.

BACKGROUND: The Cancer of the Liver Italian Program (CLIP) staging system for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) was subdivided into 36 subgroups. We aimed to validate the prognostic value of CLIP scoring.

Aspirin is commonly used as an anti-inflammatory therapy for Kawasaki syndrome. Erythema multiforme (EM), a cutaneous or mucocutaneous disorder, occurs primarily in young adults. To evaluate the precipitating factors, clinical courses, and treatment of this disease in children, 30 cases aged from 1 month old to 15 years of age were studied retrospectively from Jan 1988 to Aug 1998. OBJECTIVE: A new single nucleotide change of the hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyltransferase (HPRT) gene on coding region has been identified from a Taiwanese aboriginal family with gout. The mutation was used to screen 27 members of the family, 22 Tsou, 70 Atayal, and 76 Bunun children, the elders for whom had been found to have a high prevalence of gout.
METHODS: An entire peptide of HPRT coding region was directly sequenced from the cDNA of a patient with severe gout, and by using polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism to screen the other participants.

Cefpodoxime proxetil is a new orally administered prodrug which is absorbed and de-esterified by the intestinal mucosa to release the third-generation cephalosporin, cefpodoxime, and which is undergoing in vitro and in vivo evaluations. Using the standard agar dilution method, we compared the in vitro activity of this drug with other oral cephalosporins and quinolones against 637 recent clinical isolates from Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital in Taiwan. Against Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae, cefpodoxime showed excellent activity, inhibiting over 90% of these isolates at 1 mg/l.

This report concerns 34 patients of ulcerative colitis admitted to Taichung Veterans General Hospital, from 1983 to 1994. Among them 26 were male and 8 were female. The age at onset were mostly from 50 to 60. The average duration between onset of symptoms and the date of definite diagnosis was 10 months. From July 1986 through June 1990, 33,199 sera from various risk groups were collected in Veterans General Hospital-Taipei for detection of antibody against human immunodeficiency virus, type 1 (HIV-1). Sixty-five samples were proved positive by Western blot analysis.
