BACKGROUND: The Spine Trauma Study Group (STSG) has proposed a novel thoracolumbar injury classification system and score (TLICS) in an attempt to define traumatic spinal injuries and direct appropriate management schemes objectively. The TLICS assigns specific point values based on three variables to generate a final severity score that guides potential treatment options. Within this algorithm, significant emphasis has been placed on posterior ligamentous complex (PLC) integrity. The purpose of this study was to determine the interrater reliability of indicators surgeons use when assessing PL

Spinal hydatid disease is a not uncommon cause of spinal cord compression in endemic countries; however, involvement of the epidural space with sparing of the vertebral column is rare. Early diagnosis and surgical decompression with total removal of the hydatid lesion, when possible, is generally considered the standard of care for this disease. The authors describe a case of massive epidural hydatid disease without involvement of the vertebral column in a 62-year-old male patient, treated with a 2-stage surgical operation and administration of systemic albendazole. The literature is reviewed

There is an increasing awareness of the risks and dangers of exposure to radiation associated with repeated radiographic assessment of spinal curvature and spinal movements. As such, attempts are continuously being made to develop skin-surface devices for use in examining the progression and response to treatment of various spinal disorders. However, the reliability and validity of measurements recorded with such devices must be established before they can be recommended for use in the research or clinical environment. The aim of this study was to examine the reliability of measurements using

The association of cervicothoracic extradural arachnoid cysts and obstetric brachial plexus palsy has not previously been reported. We report two patients with this association. The first patient is a 9-month-old boy with left obstetric brachial plexus palsy that developed bilateral leg weakness at 6 months of age owing to compression of the spinal cord by a C6 to T8 left cervicothoracic extradural arachnoid cyst. The second patient is a 3-year-old girl with bilateral brachial plexus palsy and spastic paraparesis who had magnetic resonance imaging at 3 days of age that showed intraspinal cord

Sixteen patients had paraplegia due to tuberculosis of the cervicodorsal junction. Spinal decompression was performed through an extended lower cervical approach, and a humeral allograft was used to reconstruct the anterior column. All patients improved neurologically with satisfactory correction of the deformity and successful incorporation of the allograft.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested that patients transported by emergency medical services (EMS) following major trauma had a longer injury-to-treatment interval and a higher mortality rate than their non-EMS-transported counterparts.
HYPOTHESIS: There is little actual benefit of thoracolumbar immobilization for patients with torso gunshot wounds (GSW).
DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of prospectively gathered data from the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Service Systems State Trauma Registry from July 1, 1995, through June 30, 1998.
SETTINGS: All designated trauma centers

Thirty-two patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis underwent anterior fusion with rigid single rod (third generation instrumentation) and titanium mesh cages. The mean follow-up was 31 (24-45) months and the mean age was 14.9 years. There were 8 patients with King type I, 10 with type II, 6 with type III, 4 with type IV and 4 with lumbar curves. Titanium mesh cages were used in all the lumbar procedures and at the cranial and caudal ends of the instrumented area in thoracic cases. All the patients were immobilized in an orthosis for 3-6 months postoperatively. Mean preoperative primary c

UNLABELLED: The authors report their own experience with percutaneous vertebroplasty, one of the so called--minimally invasive methods, used to treat a certain group of spinal lesions affecting the vertebral bodies. The paper contains a brief review of the current literature, basic problems, indications and operative technique. The authors remark, that insertion of the needle into the vertebral body gives an access for biopsy before cement injection. This procedure was realised in the case of diagnostic uncertainty. Technical details of transpedicular biopsy are described. The authors present

STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective clinical review of patients with thoracolumbar junction disc herniation.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the clinical features of thoracolumbar junction disc herniation and to prepare a chart for the level diagnosis in the neurologic findings and symptoms.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Thoracolumbar junction disc herniations show a variety of signs and symptoms because of the complexity of the upper and lower neurons of the spinal cord, cauda equina, and nerve roots. Furthermore, much is still unknown about thoracolumbar junction disc herniations because of their rare fre

The authors present a new implant for vertebral body replacement in the thoracic and lumbar spine. Synex is a titanium implant designated for reconstruction of the anterior column in injury, post-traumatic kyphosis or tumour of the thoracolumbar spine and must be supplemented by a stabilizing implant. After positioning, the implant is distracted in situ, thus ensuring best contact with adjacent end-plates and three-dimensional (3D) stability, and minimizing the possibility of secondary dislocation or loss of correction. We compared the effectiveness of the Synex implant with that of the "Harms

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia (Masson's vegetant hemangioendothelioma) is a rare condition affecting the neuraxis. In the literature, only one case of this lesion involving the vertebral canal with spinal cord compression has been reported. We present a case of cauda equina compression due to this abnormality.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 17-year-old boy was admitted at our hospital with pain, numbness, paresis of the left lower extremity, and bladder dysfunction of approximately 1 month's duration. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging of

Various conditions such as fracture, dislocation, tumor, or infection adversely affect the vertebral body and lead to instability. Restoration of a stable anterior column is essential for normal spinal biomechanics. Various biological and mechanical spacers have been used to reconstruct the anterior column after corpectomy. In this retrospective review, the authors evaluated clinical charts and radiographs of 13 patients receiving titanium surgical mesh (TSM)-bone graft composite to reconstruct the anterior spinal column in the thoracic or lumbar region. The objective of this review was to eva

Multicore disease is a rare congenital myopathy that normally stops or makes slow progress. It starts with delayed motor development and frequent falls. Especially the proximal muscles are involved. Other symptoms include contractures of joints, clubfoot, high arched palate, chest deformities, involvement of eye-muscle, cardiac abnormalities, hyperlordosis and scoliosis that normally does not require surgery. We report a rare case of advanced scoliosis in multicore disease requiring operative treatment in a 15-year-old girl. In this case the scoliosis took a rapidly progredient course in puber
