The prevalence of strabismus and amblyopia in Japanese elementary school children.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study is to elucidate the prevalence of strabismus and amblyopia in a large population of Japanese elementary school children, from Grade 1 to Grade 6, ages ranging from 6 to 12 years. The School Health Law requires that all pupils in Grade 1 to Grade 6 be examined for vision and eye problems. Visual acuity testing is done by school teachers and eye disease screening by school ophthalmologists. Pupils with suspected ocular diseases are further examined by extramural ophthalmologists and the results reported back to the schools. The schools then summarize and sen

[Clinical analysis and follow-up study of postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome in 28 pediatric cases].

OBJECTIVE: Lightheadedness, dizziness, chest discomfort, headache, pallor, palpitation, blurred vision, fatigue, and syncope are main symptoms of postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), but they are also common problems in clinical pediatrics. Besides, most of POTS cases have normal findings in routine examinations on cardiac and central nervous system. Therefore, they are often unable to be correctly diagnosed and treated in time. Since head-up tilt test (HUT) was introduced to diagnose unexplained syncope in children, it was discovered that the most common pattern of unexplained sy

Optimised Deep Learning for Gastrointestinal Polyp Classification: A Controlled Benchmark of Five CNN and Transformer Architectures with Grad-CAM Interpretability.

Background/Objectives: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, with polyp miss rates of up to 26% reported during colonoscopy and classification accuracy remaining highly operator-dependent. Accurate multi-class polyp subtype classification is clinically critical, as it directly determines treatment decisions: adenomatous polyps require resection, whereas hyperplastic lesions may warrant only surveillance. This study aims to systematically compare five deep learning architectures for five-class gastrointestinal polyp classification and to prov

A Cross-Sectional Study on the Prevalence, Risk Factors, and Impact of Myopia Among Medical Students in Andhra Pradesh, India.

BACKGROUND: Myopia, or nearsightedness, is increasingly prevalent among students, largely due to prolonged screen time, near work (visually demanding activities performed at a short distance (typically less than 40 cm)), and reduced outdoor activity. Medical students, in particular, are at higher risk due to academic pressure and digital exposure, affecting their vision, performance, and well-being. Early detection and prevention are essential. This study investigates the prevalence, risk factors (genetics, near work, screen use, outdoor activity), and impact of myopia on daily life and academ

Low-grade peripheral inflammation accelerates retinal amyloid pathology and dysfunction in an Alzheimer's disease mouse model.

UNLABELLED: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder with increasing global prevalence. Although monoclonal antibody therapies targeting amyloid-beta (Aβ) have recently been approved, they provide only modest cognitive benefits and are associated with amyloid-related imaging abnormalities (ARIA), underscoring the need for further research. As AD is thought to begin decades before clinical symptoms emerge, early diagnosis and intervention have become critical. In this context, the retina, an accessible extension of the central nervous system (CNS), offers a promising

Community factors associated with the prevalence of pedestrian barrier removal plans in U.S. municipalities.

INTRODUCTION: Safe and accessible pedestrian infrastructure is a necessity for supporting walking and wheeling among people with disabilities. Yet, progress towards improving accessibility is limited, as is the amount of walking and wheeling among people with disabilities. Furthermore, most communities lack a plan for removing pedestrian barriers known as an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) transition plan. Limited research has examined what community factors are associated with having a plan. METHODS: Using data from the 2021 Community-Based Policies and Environmental Supports for Healt

Vision-Based Vehicle State and Behavior Analysis for Aircraft Stand Safety.

With the continuous elevation of aviation safety standards, accurate monitoring of ground support vehicles in aircraft stand areas has become a critical task for enhancing overall aircraft stand operational safety. Given the limitations of existing surface movement radar and multi-camera surveillance systems in terms of cost, deployment complexity, and coverage, this paper proposes a lightweight vision-based framework for vehicle state perception and spatiotemporal behavior analysis oriented toward aircraft stand safety. Leveraging existing fixed monocular monitoring resources in the stand are

Image Processing and Deep Convolutional Neural Network Method for Automated Malaria Parasite Detection in Thin Blood Slide Images.

Background: Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by Plasmodium species, which is endemic in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. In clinical settings, experienced parasitologists perform microscopic examinations of thick/thin blood slides. This method is labour-intensive and is adversely affected by inter- and intra-observer variability among the microscopists. The present study aimed to develop a malaria screening algorithm using computer vision to identify and classify malaria parasite-infected red blood cells (RBC) from microscopic blood slide images. Methods: The proposed cl

IGH::FENDRR and specific KRAS mutations define a novel B-ALL molecular subtype with poor chemotherapy response.

BACKGROUND: The predominant theory, underlying most optical myopia control interventions, is that relative peripheral hyperopic defocus (RPHD) is a cause of myopia progression. However, interventions that reduce RPHD only slow myopia progression on average by ~50%, so other factors are likely to be involved. OBJECTIVE: To explore the literature on accommodation and binocular coordination as possible factors in myopia development and progression. METHODS: PubMed was searched for relevant keywords in September 2025. Non-human and non-English reports were excluded. RESULTS: (1) Concerning myop

Physician readiness for artificial intelligence integration in clinical screening and diagnosis: Multicenter cross-sectional study in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly incorporated into clinical screening and diagnostic workflows worldwide. However, the effectiveness and safety of AI implementation depend largely on physicians' readiness, including their knowledge, attitudes, and perceived barriers. In Saudi Arabia, where healthcare digital transformation is a strategic priority under Vision 2030, evidence regarding physician preparedness for AI-enabled clinical practice remains limited. A multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted among physicians and medical interns working in governmental and private hospi
