Longitudinal optic neuritis-unrelated visual evoked potential changes in NMO spectrum disorders.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate if patients with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) develop subclinical visual pathway impairment independent of acute attacks. METHODS: A total of 548 longitudinally assessed full-field visual evoked potentials (VEP) of 167 patients with NMOSD from 16 centers were retrospectively evaluated for changes of P100 latencies and P100-N140 amplitudes. Rates of change in latencies (RCL) and amplitudes (RCA) over time were analyzed for each individual eye using linear regression and compared using generalized estimating equation models. RESULTS: The rates of cha

Endothelial PAI-1 (Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor-1) Blocks the Intrinsic Pathway of Coagulation, Inducing the Clearance and Degradation of FXIa (Activated Factor XI).

Objective- Activation of coagulation FXI (factor XI) by FXIIa (activated factor XII) is a prothrombotic process. The endothelium is known to play an antithrombotic role by limiting thrombin generation and platelet activation. It is unknown whether the antithrombotic role of the endothelium includes sequestration of FXIa (activated factor XI) activity. This study aims to determine the role of endothelial cells (ECs) in the regulation of the intrinsic pathway of coagulation. Approach and Results- Using a chromogenic assay, we observed that human umbilical veins ECs selectively blocked FXIa yet s

Identification of genes involved in Epstein-Barr virus-associated nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is the most common cancer originating from the nasopharynx, and can be induced by infection with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). To study the mechanisms of EBV-associated NPC, a microarray of the GSE12452 dataset was analyzed. GSE12452 was downloaded from Gene Expression Omnibus and consisted of 31 NPC samples and 10 normal healthy nasopharyngeal tissue samples. The differentially-expressed genes (DEGs) were screened using the linear models for microarray data package in R. Using Database for Annotation, Visualization and Integrated Discovery software, potential functi

Biallelic Mutations in GNB3 Cause a Unique Form of Autosomal-Recessive Congenital Stationary Night Blindness.

Congenital stationary night blindness (CSNB) is a heterogeneous group of non-progressive inherited retinal disorders with characteristic electroretinogram (ERG) abnormalities. Riggs and Schubert-Bornschein are subtypes of CSNB and demonstrate distinct ERG features. Riggs CSNB demonstrates selective rod photoreceptor dysfunction and occurs due to mutations in genes encoding proteins involved in rod phototransduction cascade; night blindness is the only symptom and eye examination is otherwise normal. Schubert-Bornschein CSNB is a consequence of impaired signal transmission between the photorece

Upregulation of the zebrafish Nogo-A homologue, Rtn4b, in retinal ganglion cells is functionally involved in axon regeneration.

BACKGROUND: In contrast to mammals, zebrafish successfully regenerate retinal ganglion cell (RGC) axons after optic nerve section (ONS). This difference is explained on the one hand by neurite growth inhibitors in mammals (including Nogo-A), as opposed to growth-promoting glial cells in the fish visual pathway, and on the other hand by the neuron-intrinsic properties allowing the upregulation of growth-associated proteins in fish RGCs but not in mammals. RESULTS: Here, we report that Rtn4b, the zebrafish homologue of mammalian Nogo-A/RTN4-A, is upregulated in axotomized zebrafish RGCs and is

Evaluation of the pontine perforators of the basilar artery using digital subtraction angiography in high resolution and 3D rotation technique.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Compromise of perforating branches of the basilar artery resulting in brain stem infarctions has been described as a major complication of intracranial stent placement for basilar artery stenosis or after implantation of endovascular flow diverters. Descriptions of pontine arteries are mainly based on examinations of injection specimens; however, there is a lack of consistent presentation of the small branches of the basilar artery in the imaging literature. Therefore, we retrospectively analyzed DSA images and 3D rotational angiography with a review of literature for a

Spatially-Explicit Simulation Modeling of Ecological Response to Climate Change: Methodological Considerations in Predicting Shifting Population Dynamics of Infectious Disease Vectors.

Poikilothermic disease vectors can respond to altered climates through spatial changes in both population size and phenology. Quantitative descriptors to characterize, analyze and visualize these dynamic responses are lacking, particularly across large spatial domains. In order to demonstrate the value of a spatially explicit, dynamic modeling approach, we assessed spatial changes in the population dynamics of Ixodes scapularis, the Lyme disease vector, using a temperature-forced population model simulated across a grid of 4 × 4 km cells covering the eastern United States, using both modeled (

Latency delay of visual evoked potential is a real measurement of demyelination in a rat model of optic neuritis.

PURPOSE: To investigate the relationship between size of demyelinated lesion, extent of axonal loss, and degree of latency delay of visual evoked potentials (VEPs) in a rat model of experimental demyelination. METHODS: Lysolecithin 1% (0.4 or 0.8 μL) was microinjected into an optic nerve of each of 14 rats 2 mm posterior to the globe. Standard flash VEPs were recorded with skull-implanted electrodes before and 2, 4, and 6 days after the microinjection. The optic nerves were stained with Luxol-fast blue and Bielschowsky's silver to assess demyelination and axonal pathology, respectively. Demye

Brain networks of spatial awareness: evidence from diffusion tensor imaging tractography.

Left unilateral neglect, a dramatic condition which impairs awareness of left-sided events, has been classically reported after right hemisphere cortical lesions involving the inferior parietal region. More recently, the involvement of long range white matter tracts has been highlighted, consistent with the idea that awareness of events occurring in space depends on the coordinated activity of anatomically distributed brain regions. Damage to the superior longitudinal fasciculus (SLF), linking parietal to frontal cortical regions, or to the inferior longitudinal fasciculus (ILF), connecting oc

[Visual evoked potentials in children and school adolescents with migraine and tension-type headache. Clinical and neurophysiological correlations].

UNLABELLED: To differentiate clinically migraine, especially without aura, from tension-type headache (TTH), especially an episodic one, in patients in the developmental age may become a difficult task. The reason is the similarities of clinical symptoms in both types of headaches. The results of examinations published so far do not explain satisfactorily the pathomechanism and clinical symptoms of primary headaches. Therefore, it makes scientists apply more and more recent research methods to explain their pathophysiology. The aim of the study in children and adolescents with migraine and TTH

Spontaneous waves in the ventricular zone of developing mammalian retina.

Spontaneous rhythmic waves in the developing mammalian retina are thought to propagate among differentiated neurons in the inner retina (IR) and play an important role in activity-dependent visual development. Here we report a new form of rhythmic Ca(2+) wave in the ventricular zone (VZ) of the developing rabbit retina. Ca(2+) imaging from two-photon optical sections near the ventricular surface of the whole-mount retina showed rhythmic Ca(2+) transients propagating laterally as waves. The VZ waves had a distinctively slow Ca(2+) dynamics (lasting approximately 20 s) but shared a similar frequ

The peroxisome and the eye.

Several childhood multisystem disorders with prominent ophthalmological manifestations have been ascribed to the malfunction of the peroxisome, a subcellular organelle. The peroxisomal disorders have been divided into three groups: 1) those that result from defective biogenesis of the peroxisome (Zellweger syndrome, neonatal adrenoleukodystrophy, and infantile Refsum's disease); 2) those that result from multiple enzyme deficiencies (rhizomelic chondrodysplasia punctata); and 3) those that result from a single enzyme deficiency (X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy, primary hyperoxaluria type 1). Eye movement disorders in multiple sclerosis and optic neuritis.

Horizontal saccadic and smooth pursuit eye movements were studied in 84 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and 21 patients with optic neuritis (ON). The MS patients were clinically classified as 'definite', 'probable', or 'possible'; subclinical eye movement disorder was found in 80 per cent of the definite, 74 per cent of the probable and 60 per cent of the possible category. Five of the ON patients (25 per cent) showed a subclinical eye movement deficit; these 5 were young patients with a recent history of ON. In a group of 27 MS patients with symptoms of spinal cord involvement only, 14

Foreground, midground, and restoration: EEG and preference responses to depth-controlled rural scenes.

INTRODUCTION: Exposure to natural and rural landscapes has been associated with stress reduction and psychological restoration. However, conventional photograph-based experiments often provide limited control over individual landscape elements and their positions within the visual field. This study examined whether depth-controlled, AI-generated rural landscape stimuli could support stress recovery and clarify how foreground and midground elements relate to landscape preference and EEG-based responses. METHODS: Depth estimation, layer masking, and FLUX-based image editing were used to constru

Depression and Depressive Symptoms in Glaucoma: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Comparative, Prevalence, and Longitudinal Evidence.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that people with glaucoma may experience more depressive symptoms than those without glaucoma, but prior estimates have been limited by heterogeneous ascertainment and insufficient separation of comparative, prevalence, and longitudinal evidence. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, SinoMed, Wanfang, VIP, CNKI, ChiCTR, and ClinicalTrials.gov to March 27, 2026. Eligible studies reported depression outcomes among individuals with glaucoma; studies included in the primary comparative analysis additionally required a non-glaucoma com

Longitudinal assessment of intraocular pressure in the 5xFAD mouse model of Alzheimer's disease.

OBJECTIVES: Glaucoma and Alzheimer's disease (AD) are major neurodegenerative disorders with increasing evidence of shared pathogenic pathways. Glaucoma involves progressive optic nerve degeneration and irreversible vision loss, often associated with elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) but also occurring independently of it. AD, the leading cause of dementia, results in progressive cognitive and functional decline, with vision disturbances including visual field defects. Epidemiological studies report higher co-prevalence of glaucoma and AD in older adults. This study longitudinally assessed I

Attentional state-synchronous peripheral electrical stimulation during action observation induced distinct modulation of corticospinal plasticity after stroke.

INTRODUCTION: Brain computer interface-based action observation (BCI-AO) is a promising technique in detecting the user's cortical state of visual attention and providing feedback to assist rehabilitation. Peripheral nerve electrical stimulation (PES) is a conventional method used to enhance outcomes in upper extremity function by increasing activation in the motor cortex. In this study, we examined the effects of different pairings of peripheral nerve electrical stimulation (PES) during BCI-AO tasks and their impact on corticospinal plasticity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our innovative BCI-AO in

Contribution of changes in the spinal cord and brain to the onset and progression of hand clumsiness symptoms in cervical spondylotic myelopathy.

OBJECTIVE: Cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) stands as the most prevalent form of spinal cord injury, frequently prompting various changes in both the brain and spinal cord. However, the precise nature of these changes within the brains and spinal cords of CSM patients experiencing hand clumsiness (HCL) symptoms has remained elusive. The authors aimed to scrutinize these alterations and explore potential links between these changes and the onset of HCL symptoms. METHODS: Using the modified Japanese Orthopaedic Association (mJOA) scale, the authors classified CSM patients into two groups:
