Molecular epidemiology of human papillomavirus genotypes among HIV-negative women and women living with HIV with cervical cancer in two regions in Nigeria.

BackgroundCervical cancer (CC) is highly prevalent in Nigeria, with over 12,000 cases and 8000 deaths annually. Differences in diagnostic methods for human papillomavirus (HPV) genotypes have generated varied prevalence rates across populations.MethodsWe analyzed the prevalence and distribution of high-risk HPV (HR-HPV) genotypes among women with CC, comparing HIV-negative women and women living with HIV (WLWH), using data from a prospective Nigerian cohort study (2018-2022). High-throughput next-generation sequencing (NGS) of the HPV L-1 gene identified and classified genotypes.ResultsAmong 1

Hyperandrogenic eumenorrheic NON-PCOS women versus women with PCOS after the GnRH-agonist stimulation test preceded by suppression of adrenal steroidogenesis with dexamethasone.

The subject of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) has been extensively covered in the literature; however, there is a paucity of data regarding eumenorrheic women with hyperandrogenism and/or hyperandrogenemia without ultrasound evidence of PCO morphology (EuHyperA), and even less data on the comparison between PCOS and EuHyperA subjects. It has previously been shown that around half of PCOS women exhibit a hyper-response of serum 17-hydroxy-progesterone (17-OHP) to the stimulation by GnRH-agonists, also indicated as functional ovarian hyperandrogenism (FOH). Often, this stimulation test is prec

Quality of Life and Mental Health of Chinese Sexual and Gender Minority Women and Cisgender Heterosexual Women: Cross-sectional Survey and Mediation Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Health-related research on sexual minority populations in China is lacking, and research on sexual and gender minority women (SGMW, including transgender women and persons of other gender identities assigned female at birth of all sexual orientations, and cisgender women with nonheterosexual orientations) is even less. Currently, there are limited surveys related to mental health in Chinese SGMW, but there are no studies on their quality of life (QOL), no studies comparing the QOL of SGMW with that of cisgender heterosexual women (CHW), and no studies on the relationship between se

Contraceptive use among women with a history of induced abortion: findings from a national sample of sexually active, non-pregnant women in Ghana.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to examine the relationship between a history of induced abortion and current use of contraception among reproductive-aged women in Ghana. METHODS: The analysed data were a weighted sample of 6544 sexually active, non-pregnant women aged 15-49 years, obtained from the 2014 Ghana Demographic and Health Survey. Survey logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the odds of currently using any contraception and of using a modern method of contraception, given a history of induced abortion in the period 2009-2014. RESULTS: A history of induced abortion b

Women born with very low birth weight have similar menstrual cycle pattern, pregnancy rates and hormone profiles compared with women born at term.

BACKGROUND: Individuals born very preterm or with very low birth weight (VLBW) have a reduced likelihood to reproduce according to population-based register studies. Extremely low-birth weight born adults had a lower reproduction rate for both men and women in a follow-up study. AIM: To investigate if being born with VLBW is associated with differences in the reproductive health, i.e. age of menarche, menstrual cycle pattern, pregnancy rates and hormone profile compared with women born at term. METHODS: A prospective long-term follow-up of a cohort of live-born VLBW children and their contro

Influence of backrest angle on swallowing musculature activity and physical strain during the head lift exercise in elderly women compared with young women.

The head lift exercise (HLE) is the most common exercise for strengthening the swallowing musculature in clinical situations. This study investigated whether a change in the backrest angle of a bed influences swallowing musculature activity and physical strain during the HLE and whether it can generate an appropriate exercise load for swallowing musculature activity for older women compared with younger women. Participants were 10 elderly women and 10 young women, each of whom performed the HLE with a backrest randomly angled at 0°, 15°, 30° and 45°. The activity of the suprahyoid, infrahyoid

Significant difference in HEDIS annual chlamydia testing rates between women who had given birth and those who had not among young Medicaid women.

We used the 2013 Medicaid Analytic eXtract (MAX) database to estimate chlamydia testing rates separately for sexually active women aged 15-25 years who had, or had not, given birth in 2013. Approximately 9.2% of sexually active women aged 15-25 years gave birth in 2013. The Healthcare Effectiveness Data Information Set (HEDIS) annual chlamydia testing rate was significantly higher among women who had given birth than women who had not in 2013 (59.7 vs 29.4%, P<0.05). Our findings suggest a need for more research to understand how differences in population mix changes and preventive screening p

Maternal and fetal outcomes in pregnant women with Takayasu aortoarteritis: Does optimally timed intervention in women with renal artery involvement improve pregnancy outcome?

OBJECTIVE: Takayasu aortoarteritis (TA) is common in the Southeast Asian and Indian subcontinent regions with a female-to-male ratio of 8:1. Age at diagnosis is < 30 years in 90% of the cases. Because the disease is common in women of child-bearing age, management of pregnancy in these patients becomes an important issue. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the maternal and fetal outcomes in pregnancies with TA and also to evaluate whether early intervention for renal artery involvement is associated with improved outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We collected data of 12 patients with 18

Evaluation of an authority innovation-decision: brief alcohol intervention for pregnant women receiving women, infants, and children services at two Illinois health departments.

Despite the availability of clinical tools and evidence-based screening recommendations, there has been little discussion regarding screening of prenatal alcohol exposure in community-based settings, including adoption and implementation. This study's aim is to evaluate and validate--through surveys and focus groups--obstacles and challenges that shape efficacious implementation of the BAI at two Illinois health departments. Results suggest that BAI implementation is facilitated by staff perceptions of its benefits, readiness to implement the intervention, and organizational support for it. Li

Patient-provider communication about gestational weight gain among nulliparous women: a qualitative study of the views of obstetricians and first-time pregnant women.

BACKGROUND: In 2009 the Institute of Medicine updated its guidelines for weight gain during pregnancy, in part because women of childbearing age now weigh more pre-pregnancy and tend to gain more weight during pregnancy than women did when the previous set of guidelines were released in 1990. Women who begin pregnancy overweight or obese and women who gain weight outside IOM recommendations are at risk for poor maternal and fetal health outcomes. With these concerns in mind, we examined what obstetricians communicate about gestational weight gain to their pregnant patients and how nulliparous
