Discreet products for children and teenagers with continence problems.

The National Service Framework for Children, Young People and Maternity Services (Department of Health, 2004a) estimates that 'at least 500,000 children suffer from nocturnal enuresis, and a significant number with daytime wetting and faecal incontinence'. The NSF also acknowledges that 'incontinence is distressing for children and young people; it can lead to bullying at school and cause emotional and behavioural problems'.

Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation After Prostatectomy: Baseline Severity as a Predictor of Improvement-A Prospective Cohort Study.

Background/Objectives: Urinary incontinence (UI) is a frequent and distressing complication after radical prostatectomy (RP). Pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) is widely recommended as first-line rehabilitation, yet the clinical factors influencing its effectiveness remain incompletely understood. Methods: This prospective cohort study included 182 men undergoing RP who completed a standardized physiotherapy program involving pelvic floor muscle exercises, biofeedback (BFB), and ultrasound-guided training. UI severity was assessed using the 1-h pad test and recorded absorbent product use. Ou

Biomechanical study of the efficacy of a new design of wrist guard.

BACKGROUND: Upper extremity injuries are frequent in the elderly or those undertaking extreme sporting activities. Commercially available wrist guards reduce the frequency of wrist fractures but are not widely used as they greatly restrict movement. METHODS: A new wrist guard was developed which provided protection to the "impact area" but does not restrict wrist or digital movement. A human hand model and a biomechanical test rig, which allowed the simulation of an adult fall from height, were developed. The ability of the new guard, which was tested with different levels of padding, to redu

Evaluation of Absorbent Versus Conventional Wound Dressing.

BACKGROUND: Lower-limb endoprosthetic operations and spinal operations are among the more common types of orthopedic procedures. Postoperative woundhealing disturbances and infections can lead to longer periods of hospital stay and recovery as well as to higher morbidity and mortality. METHODS: 209 patients who had been judged to have an indication for a primary knee or hip endoprosthesis or for a primary spinal operation were included in this randomized trial (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT01988818) over the period June 2014- February 2015. After randomization, patients in the intervention group we

The 'costs' of absorbent hygiene product mismanagement: A mini-review of contemporary literature from the Global South.

The mismanagement of absorbent hygiene product (AHP) waste - including disposable diapers, sanitary pads, and incontinence products - represents an emerging but understudied challenge across the Global South. Rapid urbanization and increased uptake of disposable hygiene products have outpaced the development of adequate waste management systems, leaving AHPs largely unsegregated, untreated, and unmanaged. This mini-review synthesizes contemporary literature from the Global South to explore the 'costs' associated with three common mismanagement scenarios: co-disposal with household waste, manag

Fluorescence immunochromatographic detection of antibodies to the p72 protein of African swine fever virus.

The African swine fever virus (ASFV), a highly contagious pathogen responsible for African swine fever (ASF), causes significant economic losses in the global pork industry. Due to its large and complex structure, ASFV remains refractory to commercial vaccine development, necessitating the creation of rapid, sensitive, and specific diagnostic tools for disease control. In this study, quantum dots were conjugated to ASFV p72 protein to establish a fluorescent immunochromatographic assay for detecting ASFV-specific antibodies. The assay test strips contained four adjacent pads arranged sequentia

Tibial nerve stimulation compared with sham to reduce incontinence in care home residents: ELECTRIC RCT.

BACKGROUND: Urinary incontinence is prevalent in nursing and residential care homes, and has a profound impact on residents' dignity and quality of life. Treatment options are limited in these care contexts and care homes predominantly use absorbent pads to contain incontinence, rather than actively treat it. Transcutaneous posterior tibial nerve stimulation is a non-invasive, safe, low-cost intervention that is effective in reducing urinary incontinence in adults. OBJECTIVE: To determine the clinical effectiveness of transcutaneous posterior tibial nerve stimulation to treat urinary incontin

Relation Between Calcaneal Fat Pad Thickness and Plantar Foot Ulceration in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

INTRODUCTION: Thinning of fat pads may elevate the risk of developing plantar foot ulcers potentially resulting in lower-extremity amputations. Evaluating whether fat pad thickness is associated with plantar foot ulceration could aid in early risk detection. This study therefore aims to compare fat pad thickness between type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients with and without plantar foot ulcers using MRI. METHODS: This retrospective cross-sectional study included patients diagnosed with T2DM of whom a nonweight bearing MRI of the ankle or foot was available. The thickness of the calcaneal f

Imaging of traumatic injury and impingement of anterior knee fat.

Fat is not just used by the body as bulk tissue. In addition to its role in storing energy and regulating hormone action, fat is used in some parts of the body for its mechanical properties. The anatomy of anterior knee fat is more complex than it appears at first sight and is capable of withstanding considerable compressive and shear stress. Specific lesions occur when such mechanical stress exceeds the physiological limits and are yet little known. Superficial fat can be the site of either acute injury by closed degloving called the Morel-Lavallée lesion or chronic injury, when subject to re

Influence of usage practices, ethnicity and climate on the skin compatibility of sanitary pads.

Modern disposable sanitary pads are becoming available worldwide. Regional differences in usage practices, ethnicity, and climate may influence their skin compatibility. Pad usage practices depend on culture, economics, and menstrual physiology. Daily usage is higher in Japan and but lower in Nigeria compared to North America or Western Europe. Evidence for ethnic differences in skin irritant susceptibility is not compelling. Dark skin may be less susceptible to certain irritants than fair skin; the Japanese may experience a higher degree of sensory irritation than Caucasians. Ambient conditio

Evaluation of modifications of the traditional patch test in assessing the chemical irritation potential of feminine hygiene products.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The first main objective of the work presented in this paper was to investigate ways of optimizing the current arm patch test protocol by (1) increasing the sensitivity of the test in order to evaluate more effectively the products that are inherently non-irritating, and/or (2) reducing the costs of these types of studies by shortening the protocol. The second main objective was to use the results of these studies and the results of the parallel studies conducted using the behind-the-knee method to better understand the contribution of mechanical irritation to the skin effects

Heating of Newborn Infants due to Blue Light-Emitting Diode Fibreoptic Phototherapy Pads.

BACKGROUND: Surface temperatures of fibreoptic phototherapy pads using a high intensity blue light-emitting diode (LED) light source have not been studied. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to measure the temperature of LED fibreoptic phototherapy pads during phototherapy in a bench-top study, and to determine temperature effects on babies during phototherapy. METHODS: A commercially available LED fibreoptic phototherapy system was tested. In a bench-top setting, pad surface temperatures were measured before, during and after a 12-h period of phototherapy (10 different LED light box-pad

Biochemical characterization of peptidylarginine deiminase-like orthologs from thermotolerant Emericella dentata and Aspergillus nidulans.

Peptidylarginine deiminases (PADs) are a group of hydrolases, mediating the deimination of peptidylarginine residues into peptidyl-citrulline. Equivocal protein citrullination by PADs of fungal pathogens has a strong relation to the progression of multiple human diseases, however, the biochemical properties of fungal PADs remain ambiguous. Thus, this is the first report exploring the molecular properties of PAD from thermotolerant fungi, to imitate the human temperature. The teleomorph Emericella dentata and anamorph Aspergillus nidulans have been morphologically and molecularly identified, wi

Association of SO2-Generating Pads before Packaging and during Cold Storage to Extend the Conservation of 'Italia' Table Grapes.

The SO2-generating pads contain different concentrations of sodium metabisulfite, which absorbs water from the grapes' transpiration, releasing SO2 gas, and there are slow-(SlowSO2) and dual (DualSO2)-releasing pads (fast release in the first 48 h and slow for up to 60 days). The ultra-fast SO2-generating pad (FieldSO2) releases the SO2 quickly for up to 6 h, and it was designed to be used soon after the harvest and until the grapes' packaging. The goal was to study the effect of FieldSO2 associated with SlowSO2 and DualSO2 pads on gray mold incidence and physicochemical and appearance charact

Effects of a Nanoparticle-Loaded PVA/SPI Pad on Microbial Proliferation and Quality Characteristics of Superchilled Pork.

Fresh pork remains susceptible to psychrotrophic spoilage during superchilled storage. Although oregano essential oil (OEO), nisin, and active absorbent pads have each been studied, their effects on spoilage-community proliferation and concurrent quality loss remain poorly resolved. Here, we coupled longitudinal 16S rRNA gene profiling with conventional microbiological and quality measurements to evaluate a poly(vinyl alcohol)/soy protein isolate pad containing OEO-loaded soluble soybean polysaccharide-nisin nanoparticles (PS-NPs). Pork was stored at -1 °C for 24 days without a pad (CK), with

Functional urethral closure with pubovaginal sling for destroyed female urethra after long-term urethral catheterization.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the pubovaginal sling as therapy for correction of the destroyed female urethra secondary to long-term indwelling Foley catheter management of neurogenic vesical dysfunction. METHODS: Fourteen women with neurologic disease and a patulous and nonfunctioning urethra underwent pubovaginal sling functional urethral closure. The purpose of the procedure is to achieve a dry perineum. Greater tension is applied to the sling suspension for urethral closure than is normally used to ensure continence for patients exhibiting intrinsic sphincter dysfunction without neurogenic vesical

Parametric Study of the Influence of Nonlinear Elastic Characteristics of Rail Pads on Wheel-Rail Vibrations.

The rail pad is the elastic element between the rail and the sleeper that has the role of absorbing the mechanical stresses from the rail and reducing the vibrations and shocks generated by wheel-rail interactions. In this paper, the problem of the influence of the variability of the nonlinear load-deformation characteristic of rail pads (resulting from the manufacturing process) on wheel-rail vibrations is investigated. The limit load-deformation characteristics of a manufactured rail pad and the medium load-deformation characteristic resulting as the arithmetic mean of the two are considered
