Disordered hypothalamus-pituitary-ovary axis in heterotopic extraovarian sex cord-stromal proliferation: a case report of fallopian tube serous adenofibroma.

BACKGROUND: Fallopian tube serous adenofibromas are uncommon tumors of the female genital tract, only dozens of cases have ever been reported. Earlier study indicated that they might be derived from embryonic remnants of the Müllerian duct. Clinical presentation of these tumors is usually asymptomatic. Small cysts of 0.5-3 cm in diameter are mostly incidentally found at the fimbriae end, with coarse papillary excrescences lined by epithelial cells and connective tissue stroma without nuclear pleomorphism or mitosis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 23-year-old woman with normal secondary sexual character

Coexistence of Small Duct Type and Biliary Adenofibroma-Associated Large Duct Type Intrahepatic Cholangiocarcinoma within a Single Lesion: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Biliary adenofibroma (BAF) is a rare biliary epithelial tumor with malignant potential, and it has been reported in association with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA). Although the malignant transformation of BAF has been described in sporadic case reports, the coexistence of distinct histopathological subtypes of iCCA in association with a single BAF lesion is exceedingly rare. CASE PRESENTATION: An asymptomatic 75-year-old man was incidentally found to have a 35-mm hepatic mass in hepatic segment 7 during an evaluation for prostate cancer. Imaging studies suggested iCCA,

Pure non-gestational ovarian choriocarcinoma in a postmenopausal woman coexisting with a clear cell adenofibroma and endometriosis foci: A case report and review of the literature.

Ovarian germ cell tumours are uncommon, with choriocarcinoma being the rarest of them. Among choriocarcinomas, the non-gestational type occurs mainly in premenarchal women, although cases have been described in postmenopausal women. The distinction between gestational or non-gestational aetiology of choriocarcinoma is essential given the prognostic and therapeutic implications involved. The distinction between pure and mixed form of choriocarcinoma also has prognostic relevance. Clear cell adenofibroma is a rare benign lesion, considered a precursor of clear cell carcinoma, with described asso

Extramedullary breast infiltration as the initial manifestation of adult acute B-lymphoblastic leukemia with TCF3::PBX1 fusion gene recurrence and adenofibroma: A case report.

Extramedullary breast relapse of leukemia is uncommon and primarily occurs in cases of acute myeloid leukemia(AML), and secondary acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) affecting the breast may also occur occasionally. The mechanism of extramedullary involvement remains unclear; patients' risk of hematological recurrence is high. TCF3::PBX1 (also known as E2A:: PBX1) is an oncogenic transcription factor arising from the T (1; 19) (q23; P13) translocation, observed in 5 % to 6 % of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) cases and approximately 3 % of adult ALL cases. Here, we report a case of

Pathogenesis of ovarian clear cell adenofibroma, atypical proliferative (borderline) tumor, and carcinoma: clinicopathologic features of tumors with endometriosis or adenofibromatous components support two related pathways of tumor development.

The clinicopathologic features of 472 ovarian epithelial clear cell neoplasms (4 adenofibromas [AFs], 41 atypical proliferative [borderline] tumors [APTs], and 427 carcinomas [CAs]) were studied in order to elucidate the morphologic steps involved in the pathogenesis of these tumors and determine whether clear cell CA is a type I or type II tumor in the dualistic model of ovarian carcinogenesis. Thirty-three percent of the CAs had an adenofibromatous background [CA(AF+)], and 67% did not [CA(AF-)]. Endometriosis was found in all types of tumors, but tumors arising in endometriotic cysts were m

[Giant fibroadenoma of the breast. Its clinical picture and differential diagnosis. A report of a clinical case].

An 18-year-old girl came to our Institute with a large tumefaction at the right breast, that during the last year had risen slowly but continuously. She underwent some clinical and instrumental exams that allow us to diagnose a giant adenofibroma or cystosarcoma phyllodes without excluding either of them. Then she undergoes a subcutaneous mastectomy with an application of a prosthesis. From the histologic point of view it is a giant adenofibroma. Giant adenofibroma is a rare breast pathology, always benign. Nowadays we have some difficulties distinguishing it from cystosarcoma phyllodes, which

Lactating Vulvar Adenoma Associated With Fibroadenoma.

Ectopic breast is found to occur most commonly in the axilla, but also less commonly on the vulva and on sites outside the "milk line" like the face, neck and chest. Vulvar adenofibroma developing on ectopic breast tissue in the vulva is exceptionally rare. More precisely, vulvar adenofibroma associated with adenoma with lactating changes has only been documented three times to our knowledge. We herein report a vulvar mass specimen consistent with vulvar lactating adenoma associated with vulvar fibroadenoma occurring in a 36-year-old woman in the postpartum period.

Benign Biphasic Tumors of the Mullerian Tract - a Mimic of Phyllodes Tumor. A Clinical-Pathologic Description of 21 Cases.

OBJECTIVE: A review of the clinical-pathologic characteristics and outcomes of biphasic polyps occurring in the female genital tract, not meeting the diagnostic criteria of Mullerian Adenosarcoma (MA). METHODS: An archival database search was run, after IRB approval, between 2001 and 2019, using terminology such as "Mullerian adenofibroma," "atypical Mullerian adenofibroma," "polypoid adenofibroma," and "atypical polyp with increased stromal cellularity." Two pathologists (JW and MRQ) reviewed all the retrieved cases and documented the morphologic features with particular emphasis on the pres

A practical approach to the diagnosis of mixed epithelial and mesenchymal tumours of the uterus.

The current 2014 World Health Organization (WHO) Classification of mixed epithelial and mesenchymal tumours of the uterus includes categories of carcinosarcoma, adenosarcoma, adenofibroma, adenomyoma and atypical polypoid adenomyoma, the last two lesions being composed of an admixture of benign epithelial and mesenchymal elements with a prominent smooth muscle component. In this review, each of these categories of uterine neoplasm is covered with an emphasis on practical tips for the surgical pathologist and new developments. In particular, helpful clues in the distinction between carcinosarco

[Tumoral vascular density in breast tumors and their effect on recurrence-free survival].

Angiogenesis quantitation of 106 patients with primary breast cancer and 35 patients with adenofibroma of the breast was compared and examined to its prognostic relevance for five-years disease-free survival in breast cancer patients. Immunocytochemical staining for Factor VIII-related antigen was performed to outline vascular endothelium. We found a significant higher vessel density in breast cancer patients who experienced recurrence (17.4) than in those with no recurrence (9.4) or with adenofibroma (8.7) [p < 0.0001]. The probability of five-years recurrence-free survival for patients with

Isolated torsion of fallopian tube with associated torsed paratubal cystadenofibroma: A case report.

Cystadenofibromas (CAF) and adenofibromas (AF) are rare benign gynecologic neoplasms of epithelial origin. They can be composed predominantly of solid fibrous tissue, adenofibromas, or contain cystic components, as seen in cystadenofibromas; which can be further classified by their epithelial cell type (serous, mucinous, etc.). They most commonly arise from the ovary; however, CAF/AF associated with the fallopian tube have also been reported. CAF/AF is typically asymptomatic and found incidentally. Like other adnexal and ovarian masses, patients are at increased risk of ovarian/adnexal torsion

Proliferative endometrioid tumors and endometrioid tumors of low malignant potential of the ovary.

Endometrioid epithelial tumors occur as adenofibromas, proliferative endometrioid tumors, endometrioid tumors of low malignant potential, and endometrioid carcinoma. Criteria for each category are given. Proliferative endometrioid tumors are benign, and the low-malignant-potential ones seldom, if ever, metastasize; they should not be designated carcinomas or regarded as malignant. However, invasive carcinoma may arise in both, and both may be associated with a similar tumor outside ovary, the latter a result of either a second primary neoplasm or rupture of the primary ovarian tumor. Endometri

[The expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen in breast phylloides cystosarcoma and its significance].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) in breast phylloides cystosarcoma and its clinicopathological signification. METHODS: Immunohistochemistry (SP method) with monoclonal antibodies PC10 against PCNA was performed in 100 cases of phylloides cystosarcoma and 39 cases of adenofibroma. RESULTS: The positive rate of PCNA in phylloides cystosarcoma was 86%. The average PCNA index (PI) of phylloides cystosarcoma was significantly different among every histologic grading (F = 85.33, P < 0.01). The degree of differentiation was lower, the PI was high

Microscopic Heterotopic Extraovarian Sex Cord-Stromal Proliferations: Expanding the Histologic Spectrum.

Microscopic, heterotopic extraovarian sex cord-stromal proliferations have only recently been reported in the literature. We describe the largest series to date, of 30 cases of microscopic, incidentally detected, heterotopic extraovarian sex cord-stromal proliferation, in women aged 25-79 yr who had undergone surgery for a range of benign and malignant gynecologic conditions. In 14 patients the foci of proliferation comprised ovarian cortical stroma, in some cases with an ovarian fibroma-like appearance. Ten cases of adenofibroma and cystadenofibroma were also identified, including 1 Brenner a

Ovarian fibrosarcoma associated with Maffucci's syndrome.

Maffucci's syndrome, a congenital condition of generalized mesodermal dysplasia, is most often associated with multiple enchondromas and soft tissue hemangiomas or lymphangiomas. This case report describes the development of an unusual ovarian fibrosarcoma and subsequent ovarian adenofibroma in a young woman with the syndrome. The importance of aggressive surveillance in this and similar orthopedic syndromes is stressed.

Mullerian adenosarcoma of the female genital tract.

Mullerian adenosarcoma is an uncommon, but not rare, mixed tumor containing a neoplastic but benign or mildly atypical epithelial element and a sarcomatous, usually low-grade, stromal component. The most common site is the uterine corpus but adenosarcoma also occurs in the cervix and ovary and more rarely in the vagina, fallopian tube, arising from peritoneal surfaces, or outside the female genital tract, for example in the intestine. Most uterine cases have a polypoid gross appearance, sometimes resulting in the formation of multiple polyps. Characteristic histologic features include a low po

Müllerian adenosarcoma of the cervix: differential diagnosis, histogenesis and review of the literature.

A new case is reported of müllerian adenosarcoma, presenting as a 'benign cervical polyp' protruding through the vulva of a 44 year-old woman admitted with abnormal vaginal bleeding. This report emphasizes the importance of a careful examination of the stroma and special features of the entrapped glands in order to contribute to an earlier and proper diagnosis. The literature is reviewed and the probable histogenesis of this tumor and differential diagnosis with embryonal rhabdomysarcoma (sarcoma botryoides), adenofibroma, malignant mesodermal tumor and carcinosarcoma is discussed.
