Complementary and alternative medicine use in adolescents with inflammatory bowel disease and juvenile idiopathic arthritis.

BACKGROUND: The use of complementary alternative medicine (CAM) is potentially prevalent among paediatric patients with chronic diseases but with variable rates among different age groups, diseases and countries. There are no recent reports on CAM use among paediatric patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) in Europe. We hypothesized that CAM use associates with a more severe disease in paediatric IBD and JIA. METHODS: A cross-sectional questionnaire study among adolescent outpatients with IBD and JIA addressing the frequency and type of CAM use

Association between traditional Chinese medicine constitution and depression in adolescents: A cross-sectional study.

Traditional Chinese medicine believes that constitution determines individuals' susceptibility to different health conditions. Previous studies have confirmed the correlation between traditional Chinese medicine constitution (TCMC) and various physical diseases and psychological disorders. However, there is limited research examining the relationship between TCMC and depression in adolescents. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 5955 adolescents aged 14 to 24 years from a vocational technical school in China. The participants completed self-report questionnaires. The TCMC questionnaire

Over-the-Counter Cough Medicine and Prescription Drug Misuse among Adolescents and Young Adults.

Over-the-counter (OTC) cough medicine misuse represents a significant risk for adolescents and young adults. Although OTC cough medicine is widely seen as nonharmful due to its ease of access, misuse can lead to tachycardia, seizures, dissociative effects, and dependence. Despite these risks, little is known regarding the correlates and outcomes of OTC cough medicine misuse. This study examined correlations of having misused OTC cough medicine and past-year misuse of prescription drugs, with a specific focus on differences among age, gender, and race/ethnicity. Bivariate relationships were fir

A Pilot Randomized Placebo-Controlled Crossover Trial of Medicinal Cannabis in Adolescents with Tourette Syndrome.

Introduction: Medicinal cannabis (MC) has potential therapeutic effects in Tourette Syndrome (TS), however there has been limited research in adolescent patients. This pilot study aimed to investigate the feasibility of conducting a randomized placebo-controlled crossover trial of MC in adolescents with TS. Method: This was a phase I/II double-blind, cross-over pilot study comparing MC with matched placebo in adolescents aged 12-18 years with TS. The active medication was Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) 10 mg/mL and CBD 15 mg/mL in peppermint-flavored medium-chain triglyceride oil. The dose titr

Traditional Chinese Medicine for the prevention and treatment of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: scientific understanding and a multimodal therapeutic approach.

Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) is a common spinal disorder characterized by deviations in the coronal, sagittal, and axial planes. As AIS progresses with age, it compromises biomechanical function and increasingly impacts pulmonary function and psychological well-being. Bracing and Physiotherapeutic Scoliosis-Specific Exercises (PSSE) are commonly used conservative treatments for AIS. However, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been gaining increasing attention in conservative AIS management. This study examines the effectiveness of TCM and its integrative therapies in AIS treatment

Establishing a Multicenter Personalized Medicine Program in Childhood, Adolescent, and Young Adult Cancer in Spain: The SEHOP-PENCIL Project.

Pediatric cancer care in Spain lacked a national personalized medicine program. The SEHOP-PENCIL initiative, established by the SEHOP, was designed to address this gap. A national survey identified the genomic sequencing needs of hospitals treating pediatric patients with cancer. Results showed improved access to targeted next-generation sequencing panels but revealed persistent variability in implementation, limited availability of advanced sequencing (whole-exome sequencing, whole-genome sequencing, RNA sequencing, and DNA methylation profiling), and gaps in cancer predisposition clinics and

The traditional Chinese medicine manipulation combined with Schroth exercises for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a three-dimensional spinal deformity that can impair posture, function, and quality of life. Schroth exercise, a physiotherapeutic scoliosis-specific exercise, has demonstrated benefits in reducing Cobb angle and improving patient-reported outcomes. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) manipulation may modulate musculoskeletal asymmetry and pain, potentially exerting synergistic effects when combined with Schroth therapy. This study aims to evaluate whether TCM manipulation plus Schroth exercise is superior to Schroth exercise alone in impro

Implementation of No-Test Medication Abortions in Primary Care: A Roadmap from an Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine Clinic.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Over 2 years post-Roe, 22 states have banned or significantly limited abortion access, exacerbating existing structural barriers to abortions for adolescents and young adults (AYAs), including cost, transportation, parental notification requirements, and confidentiality concerns. We provide a roadmap for and demonstrate the feasibility of implementing no-test medication abortions (MABs) to expand abortion access in an adolescent-focused pediatric primary care setting. METHODS: An interdisciplinary team in an AYA-focused primary care clinic developed and implemented a no-test

Assessing the Knowledge and Comfort Level of US Family Medicine Residents Regarding Consenting and Confidentiality in Adolescent Health Care.

OBJECTIVES: Organizations recommend providing confidential adolescent health care to reduce the consequences of high-risk health behaviors such as substance use, unhealthy eating patterns, and high-risk sexual behaviors. Family physicians are uniquely positioned to provide confidential counseling and care to this vulnerable population but must be trained to provide such care. This study describes the impact of formal and informal training on the knowledge of and comfort level in providing confidential adolescent healthcare among a sample of US Family Medicine residents. METHODS: Electronic su

Adapting an Intervention to Improve Adolescent Sexual Health Assessment and Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Prescription by Family Medicine Physicians in Alabama.

High HIV incidence in the US South disproportionately affects adolescents, young adults, and Black women. Using a community-engaged approach and intervention mapping, we developed PrEP-Pro, an intervention to support family medicine physician-trainees to elicit a sexual history from and provide pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to adolescents, with special emphasis on engaging with Black adolescent girls and young women (AGYW). Intervention content includes PrEP curricula, adaptations to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)'s sexual history tool, and a PrEP Champion training prog

[The Fetal Tobacco Syndrome - A statement of the Austrian Societies for General- and Family Medicine (ÖGAM), Gynecology and Obstetrics (ÖGGG), Hygiene, Microbiology and Preventive Medicine (ÖGHMP), Pediatrics and Adolescence Medicine (ÖGKJ) as well as Pneumology (ÖGP)].

Over more than 50 years, the nocuous effects of smoking in pregnancy on the fetus are well known. In the first years of science the focus was primarily on restricted fetal growth while in more recent years over 10.000 studies investigated the incomparably big sum of detrimental effects for the unborn's health. In this statement we want to present the recent scientific findings on this topic. The statement is aimed to show all doctors who treat pregnant women the present situation and evidence. In the beginning we give a short overview about the epidemiological situation in Europe. Then we pres

"Name it to tame it": piloting a narrative medicine clinical intervention for adolescents and young adults with anorexia nervosa.

PURPOSE: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is highly morbid, particularly in adolescence. Narrative-based interventions, which employ storytelling and self-reflection, have improved outcomes for patients with various conditions, but narrative medicine specifically has not been studied in adolescents with AN. This study piloted and evaluated a narrative medicine clinical intervention for adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with AN in an outpatient setting. METHODS: Participants (ages 16-25), stable for outpatient care and in therapy for AN, were recruited through eating disorder clinics and community refe

[Children's and adolescent's use of medicine for aches and psychological problems: secular trends from 1988 to 2006].

INTRODUCTION: Medicine use for aches and psychological problems is common among adolescents. Medicines are toxic and may have harmful side effects. It is therefore important to study change over time and patterns of medicine use. The objective of this paper is to describe self-reported medicine use for headaches, stomach-aches, difficulties in falling asleep, and nervousness among 11-, 13-, and 15-year-old boys and girls from 1968 to 2006. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The data material is 6 comparable and representative cross-sectional studies of 11-, 13-, and 15-year-olds from 1988, 1991, 1994, 199

Use of medicines to alleviate negative emotional states among adolescents attending Special Education Centres.

INTRODUCTION: Substantial research evidence indicates that adolescents commonly use a variety of pharmaceuticals. Studies in this area carried out so far in Poland have focused on youth attending mainstream schools. However, there is a lack of research covering adolescents residing in special education centres (SEC). The purpose of the study was to assess the prevalence of medicine use for negative emotional states (nervousness, difficulties in falling asleep, and depressive mood), and to identify factors associated with the use of the aforementioned medications by SEC youth. From Infancy to Adolescence: The Kansas University School of Medicine-Salina: A Rural Medical Campus Story.

The University of Kansas School of Medicine established a rural regional campus in Salina, Kansas, in 2011. The creation of a four-year medical campus of only 32 total students in a town of less than 50,000 inhabitants appeared to contradict all previous practices where medical schools have been situated in large metropolitan cities with student bodies frequently in the hundreds. The rationale to open the Salina campus was to attract medical students with a desire to train in a rural environment, hoping that many would eventually elect to practice primary care in rural Kansas. The authors eval

Paediatric strategy forum for medicinal product development in diffuse midline gliomas in children and adolescents ACCELERATE in collaboration with the European Medicines Agency with participation of the Food and Drug Administration.

Fewer than 10 % of children with diffuse midline glioma (DMG) survive 2 years from diagnosis. Radiation therapy remains the cornerstone of treatment and there are no medicinal products with regulatory approval. Although the biology of DMG is better characterized, this has not yet translated into effective treatments. H3K27-alterations initiate the disease but additional drivers are required for malignant growth. Hence, there is an urgent unmet need to develop new multi-modality therapeutic strategies, including alternative methods of drug delivery. ONC201 (DRD2 antagonist and mitochondrial Clp
