Comparison of UV protection properties of cotton fabrics treated with aqueous and methanolic extracts of Solanum nigrum and Amaranthus viridis plants.

Harmful effects of ultraviolet rays and protection against them have been long discussed. Numerous synthetic dyes, finishes, UV absorbers, and optical brightening agents are present in the market for decades for achieving UV protection through textiles. However, due to environmental impacts of these chemical agents, textile industry is looking for alternatives. In this regard, some natural dyes and plant extracts have shown promising results. However, use of colorless plant extracts as UV protective finishes is still rare. In this study, ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) rating of bleached c

In Vitro Modulation of Renin-Angiotensin System Enzymes by Amaranth (Amaranthus hypochondriacus) Protein-Derived Peptides: Alternative Mechanisms Different from ACE Inhibition.

Among the factors affecting the development of cardiovascular diseases, hypertension is one of the most important. Research done on amaranth proteins has demonstrated their hypotensive capacity in vivo and in vitro; nevertheless, the mechanism underlying this effect remains unclear. The aim of this study was to analyze in vitro the inhibition of peptides derived from an amaranth hydrolysate (AHH) on other RAS enzymes other than ACE. The chymase and renin activities were studied. AHH was not able to inhibit chymase activity, although a dose-response effect was found on renin activity (IC50 0.6

Modulation of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase in vivo by Ca2+ in Amaranthus hypochondriacus, a NAD-ME type C4 plant: possible involvement of Ca2+ in up-regulation of PEPC-protein kinase in vivo.

The properties of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) were studied, with respect to calcium (Ca2+), in leaves of Amaranthus hypochondriacus, a C4 plant. Experiments were conducted in vitro (by adding Ca2+ during enzyme assay) or in vivo (by feeding Ca2+ to intact leaves through petiole). Inclusion of 10 microM Ca2+ during assay marginally increased (<30%) malate sensitivity of PEPC in extracts from dark-adapted leaves. The effect of Ca2+ was marginal on PEPC in extracts from illuminated leaves. Upon applying a low concentration of Ca2+ to leaves, the PEPC activity in leaves increased by 1.5
