FM amplification for enhancement of conversational discourse skills: case study.

The purpose of this single-subject pilot study was to examine the efficacy of FM amplification for enhancing the discourse skills of a 4-year-old girl with a history of speech-language impairments, otitis media with effusion (OME), and motoric delays. Over a period of several weeks, language treatment sessions were conducted with and without FM amplification, in a classroom setting. Sessions were videotaped and analyzed for the appropriateness and effectiveness of the subject's conversational turns during sessions with amplification and with no amplification. Although the number of sessions wa

Amplified music and young people's hearing. Review and report of Australian findings.

We gave 944 young people (aged 16 to 20 years) pure-tone audiometry, electroacoustic impedance tests, and ear, nose and throat examination. We questioned them about their histories of exposure to occupational and recreational noise. The data do not support the view that there is wide-spread hearing loss caused by exposure to amplified music in young people under the age of 21 years. However, the accumulated exposure of some of them to noise is such that, if their recreational patterns remain the same, they are at risk of some noise-induced hearing loss by their mid-twenties. Further empirical

Examination of a mechanical amplifier in the incudostapedial joint gap: FEM simulation and physical model.

Implantable assembly components that are biocompatible and highly miniaturized are an important objective for hearing aid development. We introduce a mechanical transducer, which could be suitable as part of a prospective fully-implantable hearing aid. The transducer comprises a sensor and an actuator unit in one housing, located in the joint gap between the middle ear ossicles, the incus and stapes. The setup offers the advantage of a minimally invasive and reversible surgical solution. However, feedback between actuator and sensor due to mechanical coupling limits the available stable gain.

Optical gain at 1550 nm from colloidal solution of Er3+-Yb3+ codoped NaYF4 nanocubes.

We demonstrated optical amplification at 1550 nm with a carbon tetrachloride solution of Er(3+)-Yb(3+) codoped NaYF(4) nanocubes synthesized with solvo-thermal route. Upon excitation with a 980 nm laser diode, the nanocube solution exhibited strong near-infrared emission by the (4)I(13/2)-->(4)I(15/2) transition of Er(3+) ions due to energy transfer from Yb(3+) ions. We obtained the highest optical gain coefficient at 1550 nm of 0.58 cm(-1) for the solution with the pumping power of 200 mW. This colloidal solution might be a promising candidate as a liquid medium for optical amplifier and lase

Longitudinal changes in hearing ability among Swedish conscripts.

An analysis of a military database of about 36,000 tone audiograms from male Swedish conscripts aged 18 to 19 and recorded from 1969 to 1977 demonstrates a successively decreasing prevalence of hearing loss during this period. This might reflect improved therapy during the 1950s and 1960s of ear disorders causing hearing loss in small children. If observations in other studies on a reverse trend during the 1980s are confirmed, they indicate, together with the present study, that around 1980 young people began to be harmfully exposed to an environmental factor causing hearing loss. If this is t

Reaching the quantum limit of sensitivity in electron spin resonance.

The detection and characterization of paramagnetic species by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy is widely used throughout chemistry, biology and materials science, from in vivo imaging to distance measurements in spin-labelled proteins. ESR relies on the inductive detection of microwave signals emitted by the spins into a coupled microwave resonator during their Larmor precession. However, such signals can be very small, prohibiting the application of ESR at the nanoscale (for example, at the single-cell level or on individual nanoparticles). Here, using a Josephson parametric microwa

Berry curvature multipoles in Kagome superconductor CsV3Sb5.

Electronic nematic transitions in correlated systems often involve substantial reorganization of Berry curvature. Nonlinear transport measurements serve as a powerful tool for distinguishing between different types of Berry curvature multipoles that characterize nematic phases and topological changes. Herein, we systematically measured nonlinear responses up to the sixth harmonic in the Kagome superconductor CsV3Sb5. Our results identify the odd-order nonlinear Hall effect as the dominant signature of nematicity. During the superconducting transition, vortex dynamics induce rapid spatial varia

Analog model of human click-elicited SP and effects of high-pass filtering.

Recent advances in electrode design have helped to rekindle clinical interests in noninvasive electrocochleography--to enhance auditory brain stem response (ABR) recordings (namely, wave I) and to screen Meniere's disease. The salient feature of the response in suspected cases of endolymphatic hydrops is an unusually large summating potential (SP). Since the SP is a DC potential, conventional wisdom suggests the use of relatively low cutoff frequencies (i.e., long-time constants) for recording, but this may degrade the recording due to the presence of excessive low-frequency noise. However, th

Wireless distributed functional electrical stimulation system.

BACKGROUND: The control of movement in humans is hierarchical and distributed and uses feedback. An assistive system could be best integrated into the therapy of a human with a central nervous system lesion if the system is controlled in a similar manner. Here, we present a novel wireless architecture and routing protocol for a distributed functional electrical stimulation system that enables control of movement. METHODS: The new system comprises a set of miniature battery-powered devices with stimulating and sensing functionality mounted on the body of the subject. The devices communicate wi

Test-retest reliability of probe-microphone verification in children fitted with open and closed hearing aid tips.

PURPOSE: To investigate the test-retest reliability of real-ear aided response (REAR) measures in open and closed hearing aid fittings in children using appropriate probe-microphone calibration techniques (stored equalization for open fittings and concurrent equalization for closed fittings). RESEARCH DESIGN: Probe-microphone measurements were completed for two mini-behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aids which were coupled to the ear using open and closed eartips via thin (0.9 mm) tubing. Before probe-microphone testing, the gain of each of the test hearing aids was programmed using an artificial

Health implications of established and emerging stressors: design of the prospective New Jersey Population Health Cohort (NJHealth) Study.

INTRODUCTION: Some stressors, like the death of a partner, are common and rigorously studied, while others, such as those related to climate change or social media, are just emerging and in need of systematic research. The New Jersey Population Health Cohort (NJHealth) Study aims to characterise established and emerging stressors and delineate the pathways through which they influence health, especially among groups likely to experience chronic exposure to stressors including immigrants, people of colour, multigenerational families and low-income families. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A prospective

[Design of an impedance plethysmograph for reactive hyperemia evaluation in the forearm].

Impedance pletismography is based on the evaluation of the voltage change that occur as a consequence of blood flow variations in a particular tissue section. Current applied for the procedure should be alternating, weak and of high frequency to avoid electrically excitable cells stimulation, such as muscles and nerves. Blood volume changes can be measured by this method and has been applied in the diagnosis of deep venous thrombosis of limbs. An impedance meter was designed and built to be used in the forearm of patients. It consists of a voltage stabilizer TPS 76150 with simultaneous ECG rec

Polymerase chain reaction for diagnosis and species differentiation of microsporidia.

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques have been developed for the detection of microsporidian DNA in different biological samples. We used sequence data of the rRNA gene for the identification of Enterocytozoon bieneusi, Encephalitozoon intestinalis, E. cuniculi, and E. hellem in different biological samples of HIV-infected patients by PCR, Southern blot hybridization, restriction endonuclease digestion analysis, cloning, and comparative genetic sequencing. One primer pair was used for amplification of the entire small subunit (SSU)-rRNA gene of E. bieneusi, E. intestinalis, and E. hellem

Identification of a new strain of fastidious enterovirus 70 as the causative agent of an outbreak of hemorrhagic conjunctivitis.

A 1994 outbreak of acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis in Israel was caused by an enterovirus 70 strain that was distinct from previously reported strains. Characterization was by electron microscopy (eye washes), reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR; eyewash, specimens, eye swabs, and tears), and sequence analysis of RT-PCR-amplified fragments from the 5' noncoding region and VP1.

New insights into the electron-transfer mechanism of Cr(VI) activation by carbon materials for simultaneously enhanced Cr(VI) detoxicate and acetaminophen oxidation: the role of defect structures.

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is a widely recognized toxic heavy metal pollutant, yet its intrinsic oxidative potential remains underutilized. The observation that Cr(V) generated during sulfite- or photocatalyst-mediated Cr(VI) reduction exhibits efficient oxidation of coexisting organic compounds has prompted exploration of potential Cr(VI)-based heterogeneous catalytic systems. Herein, waste polyethylene was upcycled via a controlled salt-template pyrolysis strategy to synthesize carbon nanoscale catalysts (LCSs) with engineered defect structures. These LCSs synergistically amplified the oxi

Structure of alpha-synuclein fibrils derived from human Lewy body dementia tissue.

The defining feature of Parkinson disease (PD) and Lewy body dementia (LBD) is the accumulation of alpha-synuclein (Asyn) fibrils in Lewy bodies and Lewy neurites. Here we develop and validate a method to amplify Asyn fibrils extracted from LBD postmortem tissue samples and use solid state nuclear magnetic resonance (SSNMR) studies to determine atomic resolution structure. Amplified LBD Asyn fibrils comprise a mixture of single protofilament and two protofilament fibrils with very low twist. The protofilament fold is highly similar to the fold determined by a recent cryo-electron microscopy st

The cochlear amplifier: augmentation of the traveling wave within the inner ear.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: There have been many recent advancements in our understanding of cochlear function within the past ten years. In particular, several mechanisms that underlie the sensitivity and sharpness of mammalian tuning have been discovered. This review focuses on these issues. RECENT FINDINGS: The cochlear amplifier is essentially a positive feedback loop within the cochlea that amplifies the traveling wave. Thus, vibrations within the organ of Corti are sensed and then force is generated in synchrony to increase the vibrations. Mechanisms that generate force within the cochlea includ
