[Arbovirus infections in Tunisia: new serological survey of small wild mammals].

Sera of 103 small wild mammals (rodents, insectivora, cheiroptera) trapped at the beginning of 1980 in different areas of Tunisia were studied for antibody against 15 arboviruses. In inhibition haemagglutination tests, positive reactions were found against Dengue type 2 (2.2%), Tahyna (18.4%), Arumowot (42.7%) and Sicilian sandfly fever (31%) viruses. No antibody was found for 8 tick-borne viruses. In comparison with previous sero-surveys, our results indicated a fall of West Nile virus activity and the emergence of Tahyna virus. The possibility that wild cycles involving small mammals and the

Leptospirosis in free-living species in New Zealand.

A total of 1296 free-living mammals and birds of 12 species was examined for serologic and bacteriologic evidence of leptospiral infection. Endemic infection with serovar ballum was found in several introduced species of mammals. Endemic ballum infection is not recognized in the same species in Great Britain, their country of origin. Possums (Trichosurus vulpecula) were found to have a high prevalence of infection with balcanica, a serovar that has been isolated from possums in Australia and from cattle, pigs and humans in Eastern Europe. Free-living lagomorphs and deer were both serologically

Studies on Glossina pallidipes, G. fuscipes fuscipes and G. brevipalpis in terms of the epidemiology and epizootiology of trypanosomiases in south-eastern Uganda.

Glossina pallidipes, G. f. fuscipes and G. brevipalpis in Stages I and II of hunger were caught from Bukunya and Buyundo villages in south-east Uganda during the period December 1969 to February 1971, and the origins of their blood meals identified. G. pallidipes fed mainly on bovids in the two villages; bushbuck was the most favoured host (44.9% of all blood feeds) though in Buyundo buffalo provided a significant alternative (20.8%). G. f. fuscipes frequently fed on bovids (75.6%), particularly bushbuck (46.7%), but it had a wider range of acceptable hosts. In both villages, G. brevipalpis to

Investigations on the prevalence of trypanosome carriers and the antibody response in wildlife in Northern Botswana.

605 buffalo, 60 lechwe, 23 kudu, 23 impala, 15 tsessebe, 22 sable and two reedbuck from Northern Botswana were examined for trypanosome infections by serological and/or parasitological means. The indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT), the haematocrit centrifugation technique (HCT) and rodent subinoculation were used. The overall prevalence of patent infection with trypanosomes in buffalo, lechwe and reedbuck was 15,7%. In the case of buffalo and lechwe it was possible to classify their origin into high and low tsetse fly density areas. Serological and parasitological results showed a signi

Analysis of available animal testing data to propose peer-derived quantitative thresholds for determining adequate surveillance capacity for rabies.

Historical targets for country-level animal rabies testing volumes were abandoned due to ethical and welfare concerns, and interpretation challenges of testing healthy animals. To-date, no quantitative threshold has been established for evaluating adequate surveillance capacity specific to suspected rabid animals. The purpose here is to establish quantitative testing thresholds for rabies suspected animals to assess a country's rabies surveillance capacity. Animal rabies testing data was obtained from official and unofficial rabies surveillance platforms from 2010 to 2019 and supplemented with

Proteomic comparisons of venoms of long-term captive and recently wild-caught Eastern brown snakes (Pseudonaja textilis) indicate venom does not change due to captivity.

UNLABELLED: Snake venom is a highly variable phenotypic character, and its variation and rapid evolution are important because of human health implications. Because much snake antivenom is produced from captive animals, understanding the effects of captivity on venom composition is important. Here, we have evaluated toxin profiles from six long-term (LT) captive and six recently wild-caught (RC) eastern brown snakes, Pseudonaja textilis, utilizing gel electrophoresis, HPLC-MS, and shotgun proteomics. We identified proteins belonging to the three-finger toxins, group C prothrombin activators, K

Identification of genetic determinants that drive population differentiation and host adaptation in Campylobacter jejuni in California.

Campylobacter jejuni is a commensal bacterium that colonizes livestock and wild animals and is responsible for more than 80% of campylobacteriosis cases in humans, which all ultimately have an animal source. Its high genome plasticity and recombination rate allow it to adapt to multiple hosts and lead to the rapid emergence of lineages, some of which can be antibiotic resistant. Our aim in this study was to examine the population structure of Campylobacter in California and assess its differentiation between animal hosts and humans. We sequenced 69 human clinical isolates of C. jejuni from Cal

Effect of thyroid hormones from maternal milk on some measures of body growth and endocrine system in newborn sucklings.

The effect of thyroidectomy (TX) in lactating mother on the development of sucklings was studied during first 15 days of life. TX resulted in a decrease of thyroxine (T4) level in maternal milk which further resulted in a decrease of the level of T4, insulin and glucose in serum of newborns, and a decrease of body weight and of the glycogen content in liver. It is suggested that the hypoglycemia, decrease of liver glycogen and retardation of body growth under such conditions result from the inhibition of glucogenesis due to a deficiency of T4 and presumably also of GH in sucklings. These inves

Reservoir hosts of human babesiosis on Nantucket Island.

The host range of Babesia microti was studied on Nantucket Island in order to identify the enzootic reservoir of this human pathogen. White-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) were more frequently parasitized than were other indigenous animals. Infection was ubiquitous in locations where deer were abundant. Mice were most frequently parasitemic during spring and summer and adults more frequently than juveniles. Parasitemia, which was rarely intense, was sustained for as long as 4 months. Mice lived as long as 10 months, and juveniles were most abundant during early summer. Prevalence of zoonotic

Leishmaniasis in Brazil: XVI. Isolation and identification of Leishmania species from sandflies, wild mammals and man in north Para State, with particular reference to L. braziliensis guyanensis causative agent of "pian-bois".

A total of 125 wild mammals (14 different species) were examined for evidence of infection with Leishmania in an area of primary forest highly endemic for "pian-bois", due to Leishmania braziliensis guyanensis, in north Pará State, Brazil. Parasites isolated were characterized biologically, and biochemically on enzymic profiles. L. b. guyanensis was isolated from the viscera of one lesser anteater (Tamandua tetradactyla) and one opossum (Didelphis marsupialis), and the skin of one rodent (Proechimys guyannensis). The isolates were indistinguishable from 10 others previously made from the sandf

Understanding the value and causes of mortality and production losses for beef cattle in East Java, Indonesia.

Beef production is an important industry in Indonesia, especially in East Java. Understanding the economic value and causes of production losses can be used to inform investments into animal health. This study estimated the total value of animal health loss in beef cattle production in East Java and attributed this loss to infectious diseases, non-infectious diseases and external causes. Beef cattle population, reproductive performance, mortality, offtake and productivity were analysed using official statistics and values from the literature. Expert elicitation was used to estimate productivit

Multiple sclerosis and age at exposure to childhood diseases and animals: cases and their friends.

Eighty-eight multiple sclerosis case-friend pairs were interviewed by telephone to elicit information about early-life exposures. Available mothers were also interviewed. Risk factors included childhood diseases, exposures to animals, and residence. We found a positive association between MS and having measles at a later than usual age. Analysis of the data in the literature showed that this was the third statistically significant association between MS and later age for measles. This is consistent with the hypothesis that the pathogenesis of MS includes an age-dependent host response to measl

Mammalian wildlife diseases as hazards to man and livestock in an area of the Llanos Orientales of Colombia.

Development of the LLanos Orientales of Colombia, and access to underdeveloped areas in the Llanos, may create disease hazards to man and domestic animals or introduce exotic pathogens, creating reservoirs of infection for domestic animals and acting as limiting factors on the native wild species. A survey of wild animals common to the Llanos revealed a number of parasites indigenous to the area. A total total of 59 mammalian species, representing eight orders were examined. Haematozoa were represented by Trypanosoma cruzi, T. evansi and T. rangeli. Eight species of ticks were found: Amblyomma

Baiting the hook: Fish scarcity, gendered division of labour, and the fish-for-sex trade.

Transactional sex in sub-Saharan Africa's fishing communities, driven by the highly gendered organisation of production, is widely recognised as a key driver of HIV transmission in lakeshore areas. This longitudinal study investigates the economic drivers of the trade and its impact on sexual health outcomes. Specifically, the impact of regional and district fish market shocks and comparable maize shocks on facility-level sexual health outcomes are examined in Tanzania's shoreline communities. Following unfavourable shocks to the fish market, such as high prices or low amounts of fish captured

The traditional knowledge on stingless bees (Apidae: Meliponina) used by the Enawene-Nawe tribe in western Brazil.

BACKGROUND: This paper presents the Enawene-Nawe Society's traditional knowledge about stingless bees. The Enawene-Nawe are an Aruak speaking people, indigenous to the Meridian Amazon. Specifically, they live in the Jurema River hydrological basin, located in the northwestern region of the Mato Grosso state. METHODS: The stingless bees were sampled from two ecologically similar regions in the interior of Enawene-Nawe Land. The first sampling took place around the village, i.e., adjacent to houses, by the edge of the Iquê River, next to food leftovers, around human excrement, and simply when t

Hemograms and microscopic lesions of herring gulls during captivity.

Herring gulls (Larus argentatus) kept in captivity for a maximum of 28 days developed marked heterophilia and nonregenerative anemia. These hematologic findings remained abnormal throughout captivity. Concurrently, severe amyloid deposition was seen in vessel walls of the spleen and in other tissues, and vacuolar degeneration of catecholamine-producing cells of the adrenal glands was found in gulls necropsied at various intervals. Behavioral signs of stress were seen in the early stages of captivity, but were not seen in most gulls after day 3. Clinical signs referable to the microscopic lesio

Survey of desert bighorn sheep in California for exposure to selected infectious diseases.

From February 1983 to June 1985, 188 desert bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis nelsoni, = 161 and Oc cremnobates, = 27) from 18 herds in 17 mountain ranges and one captive herd were caught, marked, and had blood, fecal, and nasal mucus samples collected. Nasal swab specimens were cultured bacteriologically and virologically specifically for parainfluenza-3 (PI-3) virus. Bacterial flora differed from herd to herd. Pathogenic pneumophilic bacteria (eg, Pasteurella sp) seldom were found. Parainfluenza-3 virus was isolated from 6 bighorn sheep in 3 herds. Fecal specimens were examined for parasite ova
