Trypanosoma brucei parasites are flagellated kinetoplastid protozoan which is responsible for Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT). Current chemotherapy drugs have a number of side effects and drug resistance has emerged as a major issue in current treatment. Active bisindole alkaloid compound ochrolifuanine was previously isolated from the leaves of Dyera costulata. In vitro antitrypanosomal activity of ochrolifuanine against Trypanosoma brucei brucei strain BS221 showed strong activity with an IC50 value of 0.05 ± 0.01 µg/ml. We compared the effect of ochrolifuanine and reference compound sta

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Hoodia gordonii (family Apocynaceae) has become known globally for its claimed effect of appetite suppression. Despite a relatively large body of evidence of the plant׳s chemical make-up, peer-reviewed studies to provide scientific information on physiological effects of Hoodia gordonii are relatively sparse. The role of the pregnane glycoside P57-commonly accepted to be responsible for appetite suppression-has been questioned recently. Furthermore, a variety of physiological side-effects associated with consumption of the plant in extracted form questions its s

Species of Aspidosperma (Apocynaceae) are characterized by the occurrence of indole alkaloids, but few recent reports on Aspidosperma rigidum Rusby chemical constituents were found. The present work shows the application of pH-zone refining countercurrent chromatography on the separation of alkaloids from the barks of A. rigidum. In this study, the dichloromethane extract was fractionated with the solvent system composed of methyl-tert-butyl ether and water with different concentrations of the retainer triethylamine in the organic stationary phase and formic or hydrochloric acids as eluters in

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Malaria continues to be a serious global public health problem in subtropical and tropical countries of the world. The main drugs used in the treatment of human malaria, quinine and artemisinin, are isolates of medicinal plants, making the use of plants a widespread practice in countries where malaria is endemic. Over the years, due to the increased resistance of the parasite to chloroquine and artemisinin in certain regions, new strategies for combating malaria have been employed, including research with medicinal plants.
AIM: This review focuses on the scient

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is the inability of the body's cells to retaliate to insulin, which can periodically culminate into absolute insulin deficiency. Hyperinsulinemia can be alleviated by administering oral medications or insulin. Prevailing medicaments engender repercussions with prolonged use, as they transmute to an inefficacious form. Hence, it will be advantageous to design plant-derived antihyperglycemic drugs with remarkable efficacy and safety quotients to address T2DM and associated comorbidities. Based on prior research, we have identified 7 novel phytocompounds from Plume

Dopamine is secreted by the hypothalamus, which inhibits the proliferation and effectiveness of lactotroph cells that release prolactin via dopamine D2 receptor (D2R). D2R activation inhibits lactotroph cell prolactin synthesis and regulates prolactin gene expression. Although, commercial medications are available for hypogalactia and agalactia, various plant sources significantly alleviate these problems. Leptadenia reticulata (Jivanti) is one of the important medicinal plants often consumed by nursing mothers to improve breast milk production. However, mechanism and chemical constituents inv

Research on vector control with bioinsecticides is still being done to reduce the negative impacts of employing pesticides. Reduced insecticide use should prevent mosquitoes from harming the environment and from developing resistance to the active components in insecticides. Botanical insecticides are derived from plants that have bioactive compounds (toxic to insects) that readily break down in the environment, do not pollute the ecosystem, and are more selective and safer than conventional pesticides. The point of this study is to find out what happens to Ae. aegypti when ethyl acetate and e

Intestinal mucositis is characterized by inflammation and ulceration of the mucosa that affects the gastrointestinal tract and is associated with administering some drugs, such as 5- Fluorouracil (5-FU), conventional chemotherapy used in clinics for cancer therapy. Inside intestinal mucosa, the 5-FU acts, leading to oxidative stress, stimulating the production/release of proinflammatory cytokines, local accumulation of neutrophils and consequent tissue damage. These alterations favor bacterial proliferation, triggering secondary infections, and are responsible for undesired effects such as mye

Solubility of phytoconstituents depends on the polarity of the extraction medium used, which might result in the different pharmacological responses of extracts. In line with this, ethnomedicinally important food plant (i.e., Caralluma tuberculata extracts) have been made in fourteen distinct solvent systems that were then analyzed phytochemically via total phenolic amount estimation, total flavonoid amount estimation, and HPLC detection and quantification of the selected polyphenols. Test extracts were then subjected to a battery of in vitro assays i.e., antioxidants (DDPH scavenging, antioxi

This study provides the first detailed evaluation of C. erecta latex, an uncharacterised exudate of the Apocynaceae family, focusing on its phytochemical composition and bioactivity. HPLC analysis revealed nine phenolic compounds, mainly sinapic acid (4876.2 µg/g), ferulic acid (902.6 µg/g), and epicatechin (386.5 µg/g). Although the total phenolic content was relatively low (2.27 ± 4.2 mg GAE/g), DPPH assay indicated moderate antioxidant activity (IC50 = 114 µg/mL), suggesting contributions from other bioactive constituents. Volatile profiling via HS-SPME-GC-MS and solvent-assisted GC-MS iden
