Medical Care and Injury Surveillance in the High School Setting.

In brief: To avoid the bias of injury studies based only on coaches' perceptions, four athletic trainers served in high schools in a two-year study to identify and evaluate all injuries resulting from athletic participation. There were 1,181 injuries in 3,049 participants in 19 sports. Sprains and strains accounted for two thirds of the injuries, and the most common injury was the ankle sprain. Thirty-nine percent of injuries were evaluated by a physician, and 25 injuries required hospitalization. The athletic trainers probably increased physician visits and x-ray examinations and sensitized t

Battling fire and ice: remote guidance ultrasound to diagnose injury on the International Space Station and the ice rink.

BACKGROUND: National Aeronautical and Space and Administration (NASA) researchers have optimized training methods that allow minimally trained, non-physician operators to obtain diagnostic ultrasound (US) images for medical diagnosis including musculoskeletal injury. We hypothesize that these techniques could be expanded to non-expert operators including National Hockey League (NHL) and Olympic athletic trainers to diagnose musculoskeletal injuries in athletes. METHODS: NHL and Olympic athletic trainers received a brief course on musculoskeletal US. Remote guidance musculoskeletal examination

Plant-Based vs. Omnivore diets for athletic performance outcomes among recreational athletes in university dining halls: a randomized crossover study.

BACKGROUND: Some research suggests that transitioning from an omnivorous to a plant-based diet does not significantly change athletic performance for endurance or resistance athletes, implying comparability to animal-based diets for athletic goals. However, there is a relative paucity of these studies and widespread social media misinformation suggesting insufficient calorie, protein, and micronutrient intake of plant-based diets to meet the demands of athletic performance. This multi-site study, conducted in collaboration with the Menus of Change University Research Collaborative (MCURC), inv

Smartphone ECG aids real time diagnosis of palpitations in the competitive college athlete.

IMPORTANCE: Rapidly detecting dangerous arrhythmias in a symptomatic athlete continues to be an elusive goal. The use of handheld smartphone electrocardiogram (ECG) monitors could represent a helpful tool connecting the athletic trainer to the cardiologist. OBSERVATIONS: Six college athletes presented to their athletic trainers complaining of palpitations during exercise. A single lead ECG was performed using the AliveCor Heart Monitor and sent wirelessly to the Team Cardiologist who confirmed an absence of dangerous arrhythmia. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: AliveCor monitoring has the potentia

Pilot Simulation Task Trainer for Prehospital Management of Neck Hemorrhage.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic injuries are the leading cause of death in the U.S. of persons < 45 years of age, with 5-10% of all traumas caused by penetrating neck injuries (PNI). The neck contains several large blood vessels that supply the brain; thus, exsanguination is the leading cause of fatality in PNI. Vascular neck trauma is common in assaults, motor vehicle accidents, battlefields, and sporting events, particularly in ice hockey. There is a general lack of guidance on prehospital management of these injuries, and educating first responders, medics, and sports trainers on how to manage thes

Susceptibility of women athletes to injury. Myths vs reality.

To separate fact from fiction regarding the susceptibility of women athletes to injury, three surveys were conducted. The initial data were collected from the athletic departments of collegiate institutions, and the final material was assembled from certified athletic trainers at these institutions, plus an extensive computer search of applicable publications. The collected statistical data were tabulated, and a written commentary was evaluated by the authors. It was established that injuries sustained by female athletes, aside from those related to different biological structures, were essent

Rehabilitative management of injuries to the hand.

Athletic participation after injury may resume when cleared by a physician familiar with hand injuries. It is the role of the athletic trainer or therapist to implement appropriate rehabilitative measures and apply a protective device to lessen the chance of re-injury or delayed healing. The trainer must also educate coaches, athletes, and parents that hand and finger injuries are not inconsequential. Without proper diagnosis and treatment, there may be future pain, disability, and deformity.

Applying the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Framework to Social Determinants of Health in the Context of Sport-Related Concussion: A Clinical Commentary.

Sport-related concussion (SRC) is a prevalent injury. Significant disparities in SRC outcomes exist across racial and ethnic groups. These disparities may be attributed to the unequal distribution of political power (or influence) and resource allocation in various communities, shaping individuals' social determinants of health (SDOH). However, the influence of SDOH on SRC outcomes remains understudied. In this clinical commentary, we use the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Framework and describe how its application can help address gaps in our understandi

Current Clinical Concepts: Assessment and Management of Acetabular Dysplasia.

Acetabular dysplasia, a nonarthritic hip joint pain condition in active young and middle-aged adults, is distinct from femoroacetabular impingement syndrome. Despite increasing clinical recognition of acetabular dysplasia over the past decade, it remains a challenging orthopaedic condition for athletic trainers to manage due to the complexities of diagnosis, concurrent psychological implications, and overlap with other hip and spine pathologies. Acetabular dysplasia is more prevalent in females and is diagnosed primarily through clinical presentation and radiographic evidence. Altered femoral
