A comparison between pure-tone audiometry and brainstem electric response audiometry was made in 25 children with a conductive hearing loss due to otitis media with effusion. Pure-tone audiometry, including bone and air-conduction thresholds, was recorded using standard procedures. BERA was used to construct a latency-intensity function and from this the conductive hearing loss could be estimated. OBJECTIVE: Vincristine chemotherapy is mainly associated with neurotoxic effects. The ototoxicity of vincristine has been related to high dosage, while low and moderate doses do not seem to induce significant hearing impairment when measured by pure tone or speech audiometry. Otoacoustic emissions have been reported to be more sensitive in early detection of ototoxicity than conventional pure tone audiometry. The present study was directed at determining whether vincristine treatment interferes with outer hair cell function in the absence of measurable changes in pure tone audiometry.

In addition to registration of pure tone threshold audiometry in the standard frequency band and acoustic impedance audiometry, tone hearing thresholds were registered conventionally in extended frequency band (9-20 kHz) by air. A total of 103 otologically healthy volunteers (206 ears) aged 14 to 67 years participated in the trial. The results can serve as the standard in examination patients with pure-tone threshold audiometry by air in extended frequency band.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the role of otoacoustic emission in children with middle-ear effusion and grommets.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective study was carried out on a total of 90 ears. All children listed for grommet insertion had a pre-operative and post-operative (three to six months after grommet insertion) pure tone audiometry, tympanometry and otoacoustic emission recorded. The aim of this study was the evaluation of distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) before and after noise exposure from shooting, and the comparison of DPOAEs with pure-tone audiometry. Thirteen young male police officers were exposed to impulse noise from shooting, without using earplugs. Standard pure-tone audiometry, tympanometry, and DPOAEs were performed before exposure and at one hour post- and 24 hour post-exposure. In the one hour post-exposure testing mean pure-tone thresholds were elevated in the 1-8 kHz frequency zone and DPOAE levels were reduced at several frequencies.

A sample of 50 diabetics was compared with a control group matched for age and sex. Twenty-two of the diabetics were insulin-dependent. Subjects and controls were examined otologically and then tested audiometrically using pure tone audiometry, speech audiometry and tone decay after the method of Owens. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to document and analyse the course of several audiometric parameters in 49 patients with a non-growing unilateral vestibular schwannoma (VS).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Patients received conservative management and absence of tumour growth was ascertained by means of serial magnetic imaging studies. Pure-tone audiometry and speech audiometry were performed at yearly intervals.

High tone audiometry, which is the testing of the auditory threshold between 8 and 16 KHz, increases the clinical usefulness of pure tone audiometry. Specific patterns of audiograph were obtained from 100 children and adults with auditory dysfunction of varied cause. A survey of 1,109 native Indian children in five communities in British Columbia was conducted to determine incidence of middle ear pathologic features and to compare impedance and pure-tone audiometry as hearing screening methods.
