Persons lacking functional auditory nerves cannot benefit from cochlear implants, but an auditory brainstem implant (ABI) utilizing stimulating electrodes adjacent to or on their cochlear nucleus (CN) can restore some hearing. We are investigating the feasibility of supplementing these surface electrodes with penetrating microstimulating electrodes within the ventral CN (VCN), and how the two types of electrodes can be used synergistically. Multiunit neuronal responses evoked by VCN electrical stimulation with surface electrodes and microelectrodes were recorded in the inferior colliculus (ICC

Auditory brainstem implants (ABIs) can provide useful auditory perception and language development in deaf children who are not able to use a cochlear implant (CI). We prospectively followed up a consecutive group of 64 deaf children up to 12 years following ABI surgery. The etiology of deafness in these children was: cochlear nerve aplasia in 49, auditory neuropathy in 1, cochlear malformations in 8, bilateral cochlear postmeningitic ossification in 3, neurofibromatosis type 2 in 2, and bilateral cochlear fractures due to a head injury in 1. Thirty-five children had other congenital nonaudito

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of DX and HA on hearing preservation and tissue response with cochlear implantation in a cat mode.
METHODS: 11 cats were bilaterally implanted with Nurotron electrode. According to the different treatment, 22 ears were subdivided into four following groups: Electrode (E) only, Electrode +HA (E+H), Electrode + DX (E+DX), and Electrode +HA +DX (E+H+DX). Auditory brainstem responses (ABR) thresholds were recorded before and 3 months after surgery. After 3 months of cochlear implantation histopathological assessment of all cochleae were performed .
RESULTS: At

Objective:The purpose of this study was analyzing the characteristic of the electrically evoked auditory brainstem responses (EABR) of cochlear implantation (CI) patients with absence of cochlear modiolus (ACM) and comparing the EABR results in deaf patients with normal anatomic structures. Also we assessed the auditory rehabilitation of ACM patients after cochlear implantation.Method:Twenty-eight profoundly deaf patients were contained, 14 of them were ACM (group A) and the rest were normal anatomic structures (group B). They all received Austria cochlear implants from 2004 to 2015. Postopera

OBJECTIVES: To highlight the effectiveness of using PS testing in conjunction with electrically evoked auditory evoked potentials (eAEPs) to help guide treatment plans in patients with limited behavioural responses.
METHODS: Case report on a 59-year-old male with traumatic brain injury. Electrophysiological measurements in conjunction with PS were performed.
RESULTS: eAEPs were obtained up to the thalamo-cortical region, supporting the viability of a CI in the non-implanted ear.
DISCUSSION & CONCLUSION: Use of PS in conjunction with electrically evoked auditory evoked potentials can provide

Auditory brainstem implants (ABIs) stimulate the auditory system at the cochlear nucleus, bypassing the peripheral auditory system including the auditory nerve. They are used in patients who are not cochlear implant candidates. Current criteria for use in the United States are neurofibromatosis type 2 patients 12 years or older undergoing first- or second-side vestibular schwannoma removal. However, there are other nontumor conditions in which patients may benefit from an ABI, such as bilateral cochlear nerve aplasia and severe cochlear malformation not amendable to cochlear implantation. While electrically-evoked auditory brainstem response (eABR) thresholds for low-rate pulse trains correlate well with behavioral thresholds measured at the same rate, the correlation is much weaker with behavioral thresholds measured at high rates, such as used clinically. This implies that eABRs to low-rate stimuli cannot be reliably used for objective programming of threshold levels in cochlear implant (CI) users. Here, we investigate whether the use of bunched-up pulses (BUPS), consisting of groups of closely-spaced pulses may be used as an alternative stimulus. Experiment 1 measured psycho

Cochlear implantation has a limited but definite role in the rehabilitation of certain neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) patients. The presence of a dead ear either before, or after, tumour removal does not necessarily imply loss of function in the eighth nerve; in some instances the hearing loss will be cochlear. Promontory or round window electrical stimulation may help to identify those individuals with surviving eighth nerve function. In such patients multichannel cochlear implantation promises a better level of audition than the auditory brain stem implant. This paper highlights such a case

Central auditory processing in humans was investigated by comparing the perceptual effects of temporal parameters of electrical stimulation in auditory midbrain implant (AMI) and cochlear implant (CI) users. Four experiments were conducted to measure the following: effect of interpulse intervals on detection thresholds and loudness; temporal modulation transfer functions (TMTFs); effect of duration on detection thresholds; and forward masking decay. The CI data were consistent with a phenomenological model that based detection or loudness decisions on the output of a sliding temporal integrati

BACKGROUND: Information about the development of cognitive skills and the effect of sensory integration in children using auditory brainstem implants (ABIs) is still limited.
OBJECTIVE: This study primarily aims to investigate the relationship between sensory processing skills and attention and memory abilities in children with ABI, and secondarily aims to examine the effects of implant duration on sensory processing and cognitive skills in these children.
METHODS: The study included 25 children between the ages of 6 and 10 years (mean age: 14 girls and 11 boys) with inner ear and/or auditor

The auditory brainstem implant (ABI) is an auditory neuroprosthesis that provides hearing to deaf patients by electrically stimulating the cochlear nucleus (CN) of the brainstem. Whether such stimulation activates one or the other of the CN's two major subdivisions is not known. Here, we demonstrate clear response differences from the stimulation of the dorsal (D) vs. ventral (V) subdivisions of the CN in a mouse model of the ABI with a surface-stimulating electrode array. For the DCN, low levels of stimulation evoked multiunit responses in the inferior colliculus (IC) that were unimodally dis

PURPOSE: This study aimed to assess the written language skills of children with auditory brainstem implants (ABI).
METHODS: In this study, 15 children (from second to eighth grades) with ABI were evaluated for their written language abilities using a written expression skill assessment form. Five different features of written expression points were scored and analyzed, yielding a composite score for written expression skills.
RESULTS: This study showed that all children with ABI needed more verbal cues than spontaneously written samples. Moreover, these children used short and simple senten
