Combining regional expertise to form a bereavement support alliance.

Providing compassionate bereavement care for families experiencing perinatal loss is a standard of care in most healthcare organizations. In this article, we describe the development of The Alliance of Perinatal Bereavement Support Facilitators, begun over 25 years ago in Chicago by staff who identified the need to reach out to colleagues at other area institutions for advice and support in this work. This collaboration created a regional support network that has resulted in a long-lasting, active, sustainable organization of excellence focused on enhancing practice, education, and perinatal b

How they died, time since loss, and bereavement outcomes.

This analysis explores associations between differing death circumstances and the course of bereavement among a sample of 540 bereaved parents. Comparisons were made between parents whose children died by suicide (n = 462), those losing children from other traumatic death circumstances (n = 54), and others whose children died from natural causes (n = 24). Results were mixed, showing suicide survivors with more grief difficulties and other mental health problems on some criteria, though most findings showed no substantive differences between these subgroups. Results also showed, in the first ye

Relationships between bereavement and cognitive functioning in older adults.

BACKGROUND: Bereavement is often associated with increased levels of depression, anxiety, and stress. The question of whether grief is associated with cognitive deficits in older adults remains largely unanswered. Although Xavier and coworkers (see text) found preliminary evidence that grief, in the absence of depression, impacted on memory in a sample of the oldest-old in Brazil, the impact of bereavement on cognitive functioning, independent of the effects of mood, has not been adequately examined. OBJECTIVE: To replicate and expand on the work of Xavier and colleagues to examine whether th

Parental bereavement after suicide and accident: a comparative study.

In what way is the bereavement process following suicide different from other types of bereavement? The participants were 30 survivors of suicide and 30 survivors of car accidents who were interviewed twice at an average of six months, and the second measure was taken at an average of nine months after the death, with standardized questionnaires to measure depression and grief reaction. Measures of shame, social support, family adaptation, psychological distress, and prior losses were also obtained during the second interview. All survivors were parents who had lost a son aged between 18 and 3

[Bereavement evolution in mothers and families after perinatal death].

Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 33 mothers one to 9 years after the death of a child in the perinatal period: 15/33 mothers (45.5%) are dissatisfied with care givers attitudes, 8/33 (24.2%) showed pathological grief reactions, 11/29 (37.9%) had established a pathological relationship with at least one of their living children, 5/29 (17.2%) were in disagreement with the child's father. Univariable analysis of interviews and obstetrical data showed that some factors where significantly correlated with pathological evolution. The relative risk (RR) of mothers' dissatisfaction was s

Spousal Bereavement and Mental Health Among Japanese Older Adults.

Spousal loss is a major life event with profound mental health implications. Despite abundant research on the psychological well-being of widows, most studies rely on post-bereavement data, risking recall bias. Therefore, this study analysed data from the National Survey of the Japanese Elderly to enhance our understanding of the bereavement process. We observed the levels and trajectories of depressive symptoms before, during, and after spousal loss using the first seven waves of the survey from 1987 to 2006. The results showed a modest increase in symptoms prior to loss and a significant spi

Mindfulness-Based Interventions for Bereavement: A Systematized Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) have shown promising effects across diverse areas of psychiatry, yet their specific role in bereavement remains insufficiently synthesized. Bereavement is a universal but heterogeneous process, with a minority of individuals at risk of developing prolonged grief disorder (PGD). Understanding the potential benefits of MBIs in this context is crucial for informing clinical practice. METHODS: Following the methodological framework of systematized narrative reviews, a comprehensive literature search was conducted across major databases

Undoing death: Counterfactual thinking and emotional adaptation to bereavement.

Counterfactual thinking, mental simulations about how a situation could have turned out differently (if only … then … thoughts), increase grief and depression levels following bereavement. Thoughts about how (in)actions of oneself could have prevented the death (i.e., self-referent upward counterfactuals), are detrimental to post-loss mental health. Conversely, thoughts about how one's current situation could be (even) worse (i.e. downward counterfactuals), are theorized to improve post-loss mental health. There is limited information about what counterfactuals bereaved people spontaneously ge

Beyond grief: Quantifying bereavement needs of rural family caregivers.

OBJECTIVES: Family caregivers (FCGs) may experience numerous psychosocial and practical challenges with interpersonal relationships, mental health, and finances both before and after their care recipient (CR) dies. The specific challenges affecting rural FCGs who often have limited access to palliative care services, transitional care, and other community resources are not well understood. The purpose of this paper is to quantify the challenges rural FCGs experienced immediately before the death of a CR and continuing into the bereavement period. METHODS: A secondary analysis of data from a r

Clinical practice guidelines for perinatal bereavement care - An overview.

BACKGROUND: High quality perinatal bereavement care is critical for women and families following stillbirth or newborn death. It is a challenging area of practice and a difficult area for guideline development due to a sparse and disparate evidence base. AIM: We present an overview of the newly updated Perinatal Society of Australia and New Zealand/Stillbirth Centre of Research Excellence guideline for perinatal bereavement care. The guideline aims to provide clear guidance for maternity health care providers and their services to support the provision of care that meets the needs of bereaved

Does worry affect adjustment to bereavement? A longitudinal investigation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Repetitive thought is a trans-diagnostic risk-factor for development of psychopathology. Research on repetitive thought in bereaved individuals has focused primarily on clarifying the role of rumination, repetitive thinking about past negative events and/or negative emotions. While detrimental effects of rumination have been demonstrated following bereavement, surprisingly few studies have aimed to clarify the role of worry, repetitive thinking about potential future negative events, in adjustment to loss. This study sought to fill this gap in knowledge. METHODS/DES

Evaluation of a Specialised Counselling Service for Perinatal Bereavement.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to evaluate the outcomes of Petals: a charitable organisation in Cambridgeshire. Petals provides counselling for women and couples who have suffered perinatal bereavement, or trauma during pregnancy or birth. This paper attempts to evaluate the effect of counseling interventions at this difficult time. METHODS: Outcomes were recorded in 107 patients using the CORE (Clinical Outcomes in Routine Evaluation) system. CORE was developed to assess the effectiveness of psychological therapies. CORE-OM (CORE Outcome Measure) involves a questionnaire that assesses subjective well-

Caring for Brain Tumour Patients: Psychological reactions after bereavement.

AIM: The aim of this study was to describe the changes in quality of life and in levels of anxiety and depression experienced by caregivers of patients with brain tumour 18 months after their bereavement. METHODS: This longitudinal study employed data from two time points: time 1, during the hospital stay of the caregiver's loved one; and time 2, approximately 18 months after the death of the patient. A total of 51 caregivers agreed to participate in the study at both time points. We used the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey; we compared the data

War and bereavement: consequences for mental and physical distress.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the long-term impact of the killing of a parent in childhood or adolescence during war on distress and disability in young adulthood. This study assessed current prevalence rates of mental disorders and levels of dysfunction among young adults who had lost their father due to war-related violence in childhood or adolescence. METHODS: 179 bereaved young adults and 175 non-bereaved young adults were interviewed a decade after experiencing the war in Kosovo. Prevalence rates of Major Depressive Episode (MDE), anxiety, and substance use disorders, and current sui

Complicated grief and related bereavement issues for DSM-5.

Bereavement is a severe stressor that typically incites painful and debilitating symptoms of acute grief that commonly progresses to restoration of a satisfactory, if changed, life. Normally, grief does not need clinical intervention. However, sometimes acute grief can gain a foothold and become a chronic debilitating condition called complicated grief. Moreover, the stress caused by bereavement, like other stressors, can increase the likelihood of onset or worsening of other physical or mental disorders. Hence, some bereaved people need to be diagnosed and treated. A clinician evaluating a be

The effect of traumatic bereavement on tsunami-exposed survivors.

Fourteen months after the 2004 tsunami, mental health outcome was assessed in 187 bereaved relatives, 308 bereaved friends, and in 3,020 nonbereaved Swedish survivors. Of the bereaved relatives, 41% reported posttraumatic stress reactions and 62% reported impaired general mental health. Having been caught or chased by the tsunami in combination with bereavement was associated with increased posttraumatic stress reactions. Complicated grief reactions among relatives were almost as frequent as posttraumatic stress reactions. The highest levels of psychological distress were found among those who

Childhood bereavement: psychopathology in the 2 years postparental death.

OBJECTIVE: Although the death of a parent is one of the most significant stressors a child can experience, the psychiatric sequelae of parental death are not fully understood. METHOD: A total of 360 parent-bereaved children (ages 6-17) and their surviving parents were directly interviewed four times during the first 2 years following the death (at 2, 6, 13, and 25 months). Data collection occurred from 1989 to 1996. Psychiatric symptomatology was compared among the bereaved children, 110 depressed children, and 128 community control children and their informant parents. Additional analyses ex
