Application of microbial fuel cell technology to the remediation of compound heavy metal contamination in soil.

Exploring the removal rules of MFC on composite heavy metal pollution is very important for the future development and field application of MFC. We constructed a three-chamber soil MFC and the results showed that with the gradual deterioration of soil heavy metal contamination from single heavy metal to metals in different oxidation states (e.g., copper (II), lead (II), and chromium (III) compounds), the internal resistance of the soil MFC increased by 2.16-2.71 times, which significantly inhibited the power production performance of the MFC. After 59 days of remediation, the migration removal

An overview in the development of cathode materials for the improvement in power generation of microbial fuel cells.

Since the high cost and low power generation hinder the overall practical application of microbial fuel cells (MFCs), numerous attempts have been made in the field of cathode materials to enhance the electrical performance of MFCs because they directly catalyze the oxygen reduction reactions (ORR). To choose a proper cathode material, following principles such as ORR activity, conductivity, cost-efficiency, durability, surface area, and accessibility should be taken into consideration. In preparation of cathode materials, versatile materials have been chosen, synthesized, or modified to achiev

Synergistic performance of nickel-based anode microbial fuel cells for the treatment of shale gas flowback wastewater and aged landfill leachate.

NiCo2O4-modified carbon cloth (NCOC) and Ni-P-coated carbon cloth (NPC) were prepared as Ni-based anodes for microbial fuel cells (MFCs), which treat mixed wastewater composed of equal volumes of shale gas flowback wastewater (SGFW) and aged landfill leachate (ALL). The NPC anode MFC (NPC-MFC) achieved the highest output voltage of 643.3 mV and a maximum power density of 1412.9 mW m-2, with a markedly lower apparent internal resistance of 155 Ω than the NCOC-MFC (398.2 mV, 196.2 mW m-2 and 870.0 Ω). Moreover, the electrochemical measurements showed that the NPC anode exhibited a much higher ex

The overlooked promotion of electricity generation by electrochemically active bacteria using chitosan.

The modification of electrodes with nanomaterials improves the adhesion of electrochemically active bacteria (EAB) and their generation of electricity. Although chitosan (CTS) is the most commonly used nanomaterial dispersant, its effects on EAB remain unclear. This study systematically investigates the effects of electrodeposited CTS on electricity production by EAB and elucidates the underlying biological mechanisms. The results demonstrate that EAB generates 14.19 times more electricity with a modified carbon cloth electrode containing electrodeposited CTS compared with an unmodified electr

Biogenic FeS Reshapes microbial interactions to regulate acetogenesis in CO2-Fed microbial electrosynthesis.

Inefficient electron transfer and poorly coordinated microbial communities often limit stable CO2-to-acetate conversion in microbial electrosynthesis (MES). Herein, Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 was introduced to induce in situ biogenic FeS formation at the cathode to regulate microbial interactions and enhance acetogenesis. Under the acetogenesis dominant condition (RAT: sludge to MR-1 ratio of 2:1, Fe/S = 5/10 mM, initial MR-1 inoculation), acetate production reached 1330.6 mg L-1 with the carbon recovery efficiency of 62.9%. Community and metagenomic analyses showed that FeS selectively enrich

Modular multi-cathode microbial electrosynthesis enabling predictable scale-out conversion of CO2 to acetate.

Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) uses electrosynthetic microorganisms to convert CO2 into valuable intermediate chemicals, enabling sustainable carbon-negative CO2 capture and utilization (CCU). Nevertheless, the scaling up of MES reactors remains a challenge because increasing the electrode area and reactor volume often deteriorates the electrochemical and biological uniformity, leading to performance losses in a scaled-up system. This paper proposes a modular multi-cathode chamber MES configuration in which multiple cathodes in separated chambers share a single anode, allowing modular expans

Harnessing CO2 for sustainable bioelectricity: An engineered two-stage microbial co-culture approach with enhanced acetate metabolism.

Climate change driven by rising atmospheric CO2 levels underscores the urgent need for sustainable energy solutions. This study investigates the dual potential of CO2 as a primary carbon source and acetate as an intermediate to simultaneously mitigate atmospheric CO2 levels and generate bioelectricity using microbial fuel cells (MFCs). A synthetic microbial co-culture was developed, combining Clostridium ljungdahlii for CO2 sequestration and Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 for bioelectricity production. To optimize MFC performance, S. oneidensis was modularly engineered to enhance acetate metabolis

Recent advances in biocathode materials and configurations for reactor applications in microbial electrosynthesis of CO2.

Elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) levels driven by urbanization and anthropogenic activities have accelerated global warming. CO2 upcycling using microbial electrosynthesis (MES) offers a unique opportunity to address this critical issue. The emerging field of MES is a sustainable approach toward transforming CO2 into resourceful chemicals because of the self-sustaining activity of electroactive bacteria (EAB). On the other hand, microbe-electrode interface engineering at the biocathode is critical for effective CO2 conversion. The applied potential at the biocathode supplies the neces

Strengthening H2 gas-liquid mass transfer using superaerophobic cathodes for enhanced methane production from CO2 in H2-mediated microbial electrosynthesis system.

H2-mediated microbial electrosynthesis (MES) could run under a high current density, but the low solubility of H2 limited its performance. Reducing the H2 bubble size facilitates H2 gas-liquid mass transfer and it has been reported to be realized on superaerophobic electrodes. Therefore, we adopted a CoP nanowire-modified nickel foam (CoP-NiF) as the superaerophobic cathode in a H2-mediated MES reactor to enhance the methane production from CO2. The CoP nanowire modification reduced the average diameter of H2 bubbles from ∼ 300 μm to ∼ 100 μm, thereby exhibiting a 129 % enhancement of the H2 m

Electrochemically mediated phosphorus and energy recovery from digested effluent.

The growing global concern over the high phosphorus concentration in discharged wastewaters has driven the demand for exploring the means to recover it from wastewater. We previously demonstrated the possibility of phosphorus recovery by iron-air fuel cells from digested effluent. The present study focused on further optimizing the performance of the fuel cell by adjusting the wastewater properties (initial pH) and device parameters (anode/cathode area ratio, electrode spacing). Under neutral or slightly alkaline conditions, the HCO3- ions accelerated the formation of iron anode passivation la

Enhanced electrochemical performance by nickel-iron layered double hydroxides (LDH) coated on Fe3O4 as a cathode catalyst for single-chamber microbial fuel cells.

The improvement of cathode performance has always been the bottleneck and research hot spot for microbial fuel cells (MFCs). An Fe3O4@NiFe-LDH composite with a nanoscale core-shell structure containing an Fe3O4 magnetic core and a layered double hydroxide (LDH) shell was prepared by the hydrothermal method. The Fe3O4@NiFe-LDH was characterized by FT-IR, XRD, SEM and EDS. The characterization results showed that the composite had a unique cauliflower-like nanoflake structure and special pore size distribution, which greatly improved the ORR performance. Moreover, the use of the synthesized Fe3O

Phosphorus recovery from artificial wastewater by microbial fuel cell and its effect on power generation.

The effects of ammonium (NH4) and magnesium (Mg) on the precipitation of phosphorus in artificial wastewater by an air-cathode single-chamber microbial fuel cell were investigated. When both NH4 and Mg were added to the wastewater, phosphorus was precipitated as struvite. Almost no precipitation occurred with the addition of only NH4, while phosphorus was precipitated as cattiite with the addition of only Mg. However, the amount of precipitate was less than that observed in experiments in which NH4 was also added. As the amounts of NH4 and Mg were increased, more precipitate was observed. Prec

Simulated microgravity enhances intracellular energy metabolism and electricity generation by electrochemically active bacteria for in situ space bioenergy production.

Electrochemically active bacteria (EAB) characterized by extracellular respiration is promising for bioregenerative life support systems and elemental cycling at extraterrestrial planetary bases. However, it remains unclear how microgravity modulates genes related to electricity generation and reshapes intracellular energy metabolism. In this study, the impact of simulated microgravity on EAB was systematically analyzed through electricity generation, gene enrichment, energy metabolism, and central carbon metabolic reprogramming. The results demonstrate that simulated microgravity increases th

Bioelectrochemical carbon monoxide methanation in mixed-culture microbial electrolysis cells: Performance, electron transfer pathways and microbial succession.

Bioelectrochemical methanation offers a promising avenue for carbon resource recovery. However, the direct biocathodic conversion of toxic carbon monoxide (CO) into methane, as well as the relevant interfacial extracellular electron transfer pathways and microbial community succession remain largely unexplored. Here, we systematically investigated the CO methanation process within a mixed-culture microbial electrolysis cell. Decreasing the cathodic potential from -0.90 to -1.05 V triggered a significant enhancement in methanogenic activity, boosting the cumulative methane yield from 0.142 to 1
