Elder Abuse in the Iberian Peninsula and Bolivia: A Multicountry Comparative Study.

The objective of this study is to determine the prevalence of abuse of vulnerable older persons in the family and community environment in the following regions-Spain (Andalusia-Córdoba), Portugal (Azores), and Bolivia (Santa Cruz de la Sierra)-and to identify risk factors and delineate a profile of abused older persons. For this, a descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted. The sample consisted of people in the age group 65 years plus living in the catchment areas of health centers. The following were used as instruments to collect data: the medical record of the patients of relevant he

First survey on antibiotic resistance markers in Enterobacteriaceae in Cochabamba, Bolivia.

A molecular survey was conducted in Cochabamba, Bolivia, to characterize the mechanism involved in the resistance to clinically relevant antibiotics. Extended Spectrum β-lactamase encoding genes and plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR) markers were investigated in a total of 101 oxyimino-cephalosporin-resistant enterobacteria recovered from different health centers during four months (2012-2013). CTX-M enzymes were detected in all isolates, being the CTX-M-1 group the most prevalent (88.1%). The presence of blaOXA-1 was detected in 76.4% of these isolates. A high quinolone resistance r

Modelling the geographical distribution of soil-transmitted helminth infections in Bolivia.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of infection with the three common soil-transmitted helminths (i.e. Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, and hookworm) in Bolivia is among the highest in Latin America. However, the spatial distribution and burden of soil-transmitted helminthiasis are poorly documented. METHODS: We analysed historical survey data using Bayesian geostatistical models to identify determinants of the distribution of soil-transmitted helminth infections, predict the geographical distribution of infection risk, and assess treatment needs and costs in the frame of preventive chemoth

Prevalence of Leishmania spp. infection in domestic dogs in Chapare, Bolivia.

Data on Leishmania spp. infection in dogs in Bolivia is scarce. Dogs from an area where 90% of human cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) cases are due to Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis were screened for Leishmania infection using established enzyme-linked immunosorbent antibody test (ELISA) protocols. Although none of the 51 dogs surveyed had clinical lesions indicative of CL, 6 out of 51 (11.8%) sampled dogs tested positive by ELISA.

Molecular epidemiology of yellow fever in Bolivia from 1999 to 2008.

Yellow fever (YF) is a serious public health problem in Bolivia since at least the 19th century. Surprisingly, very limited information has been made available to date regarding the genetic characterisation and epidemiology of Bolivian YF virus (YFV) strains. Here, we conducted the genetic characterization of 12 human isolates of YFV collected in Bolivia between 1999 and 2008, by sequencing and analysis of two regions of the viral genome: a fragment encoding structural proteins "PrM" (premembrane and envelope) and a distal region "EMF," spanning the end of the virus genome. Our study reveals a

Influence of helminth infections on childhood nutritional status in lowland Bolivia.

Infectious disease, such as diarrheal disease, respiratory infections, and parasitic infections, are an important source of nutritional and energetic stress in many populations. Inspired by the research and methodological innovations of A. Roberto Frisancho, this work considers the impact of childhood environment and local disease ecology on child health and nutritional patterns among an indigenous group in lowland Bolivia. Specifically, we examine the association between soil-transmitted helminth infection, especially hookworm species, and anthropometric markers of short- and long-term nutrit

[Nasu Hakola disease: a report of the first two cases in Bolivia].

INTRODUCTION: Nasu Hakola disease (NHD) is a progressive dementia that presents accompanied by bone cysts and, at random, epilepsy. It is an autosomal recessive hereditary disease and its genetic defect is located at the 19q13.1 chromosome. The genetic mutation was identified at DAP 12. It appears that DAP 12 is expressed in the microglial activation and the differentiation of macrophages in the central nervous system and, at the same time, in the osteoclasts in charge of bone remodelling. This double character consisting of dementia and bone cysts, which contain triglycerides and thin PAS pos

Maternal and congenital syphilis in Bolivia, 1996: prevalence and risk factors.

OBJECTIVES: The present study was carried out in seven maternity hospitals to determine the prevalence of maternal syphilis at the time of delivery and the associated risk factors, to conduct a pilot project of rapid syphilis testing in hospital laboratories, to assure the quality of syphilis testing, and to determine the rate of congenital syphilis in infants born to women with syphilis at the time of delivery--all of which would provide baseline data for a national prevention programme in Bolivia. METHODS: All women delivering either live-born or stillborn infants in the seven participating

Field evaluation of an indirect ELISA for detection of brucellosis in lowland Bolivia.

Bovine brucellosis exists endemically at an estimated prevalence of 10% in the developing dairy industry of Santa Cruz in tropical Bolivia. This paper describes field testing of an FAO/IAEA indirect ELISA for brucellosis, as a possible replacement confirmatory test for the complement fixation test (CFT). The ELISA and CFT were compared on sera from 3 cattle populations: a non-vaccinated negative population, an S19-vaccinated negative population, and a brucellosis-positive population of unknown vaccination status. The CFT and ELISA showed excellent specificities of 100% and 98% respectively aga

The Aymara of western Bolivia: III. Occlusion, pathology, and characteristics of the dentition.

With the objective of contributing to the understanding of factors influencing the characteristics of dentition, dental observations from 429 children and adult highland people of western Bolivia are described. Various age, sex, ethnic, and village differences are observed in malocclusion, dental caries, periodontal disease, dental morphology, and anomalies. The findings revealed a population with relatively good occlusion, low frequency of dental pathology, and dental characteristics in part consistent with those of other similar Amerindian populations.

Fascioliasis of livestock and snail host for Fasciola in the Altiplano Region of Bolivia.

Fascioliasis caused by Fasciola hepatica was a serious problem for sheep and alpacas in the Altiplano Region of Bolivia. In some provinces close to Lake Titicaca, the raising of sheep was forced to discontinue, because infection with the fluke made it unprofitable and almost impossible. It was proved that in the Altiplano Region, two species of freshwater snails, Lymnaea viatrix and L. cubensis var., served as intermediate hosts for F. hepatica. In some subtropical areas of Bolivia, these snails could not be found, although other Lymnaea sp. was widely distributed there. As it is possible for

Measuring illicit cigarette purchases in Bolivia: evidence from an intercept survey.

BACKGROUND: Bolivia has one of the lowest tobacco tax rates in the Americas and shares a long border with Paraguay, a documented regional source of illicit cigarettes. The most recent estimate of illicit trade in Bolivia dates to 2002 and relied on industry-reported sales data. We provide the first independent, direct estimate of illicit cigarette penetration in the country. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of 2366 adults who smoke in Bolivia's three largest metropolitan areas (La Paz/El Alto, Cochabamba and Santa Cruz) between July and August 2024. Cigarette packs were photogra

High SARS-CoV-2 Prevalence among Healthcare Workers in Cochabamba, Bolivia.

Healthcare workers (HCWs) are at increased risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection. The aim of the study was to estimate the SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence among HCWs in Cochabamba, Bolivia and to determine the potential risk factors. In January 2021, a cross-sectional SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence study was conducted in 783 volunteer clinical and non-clinical HCWs in tertiary care facilities. It was based on IgG detection using ELISA, chemiluminiscence, and seroneutralisation tests from dried blood spots. Analysis revealed a high seroprevalence (43.4%) of SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies. The combination of anosmia and

Gendered Power Relations and Informed Consent: The I.V. v. Bolivia Case.

In a landmark decision handed down on November 30, 2016, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights analyzed the foundations of the right to informed consent. The court held Bolivia responsible for the forced sterilization of I.V., an immigrant woman from Peru, and recognized the importance of personal autonomy as a constitutive element of personality. This paper discusses the ethical foundations of the decision and explains the relevance of this judgment in furthering women's rights in Latin America.

Viral aetiology influenza like illnesses in Santa Cruz, Bolivia (2010-2012).

BACKGROUND: Acute respiratory infections represent a serious public health issue worldwide but virological aetiologies of Influenza Like Illnesses (ILIs) remain largely unknown in developing countries. This study represents the first attempt to characterise viral aetiologies of ILIs in Bolivia. METHODS: It was performed in Santa Cruz city from January 2010 to September 2012, based on 564 naso-pharyngeal swabs collected in a National Reference Laboratory and real-time PCR techniques, viral cultures and phylogenetic analyses. RESULTS: 50.2% of samples were positive for at least one virus with
