Clinical features and intraocular lens material properties for posterior capsule opacification risk prediction.

Posterior Capsule Opacification (PCO) remains a prevalent long-term complication following surgery for cataract, the world's primary blinding disease, significantly compromising visual outcomes. Although intraocular lens (IOL) material is a recognized risk factor, large-scale datasets linking granular material properties with longitudinal clinical outcomes remain scarce. Here, we present a real-world dataset comprising clinical records from 16,970 patients (22,709 eyes) who underwent cataract surgery at the Eye Center of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine

Novel Insight of Posterior Capsule Opacification: The Role of Lens Epithelial Cell Senescence.

BACKGROUND: Posterior capsule opacification (PCO), the most common complication following cataract surgery, results from the proliferation, migration and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of residual lens epithelial cells (LECs), typically driven by postoperative inflammatory and growth factor changes. However, delayed-onset PCO, occurring years after surgery without obvious inflammation, suggests the involvement of additional mechanisms, with senescent cells identified as contributors to EMT. This study investigates the role of LEC senescence in PCO development. METHODS: Transcriptomic

Clinical Translation of Long-Acting Drug Delivery Systems for Posterior Capsule Opacification Prophylaxis.

Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) remains the most common cause of vision loss post cataract surgery. The clinical management of PCO formation is limited to either physical impedance of residual lens epithelial cells (LECs) by implantation of specially designed intraocular lenses (IOL) or laser ablation of the opaque posterior capsular tissues; however, these strategies cannot fully eradicate PCO and are associated with other ocular complications. In this review, we critically appraise recent advances in conventional and nanotechnology-based drug delivery approaches to PCO prophylaxis. We

NIR-triggered drug delivery system for chemo-photothermal therapy of posterior capsule opacification.

Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is the most common complication after cataract surgery and is likely to cause the second loss of vision. Pharmacological PCO prophylaxis has been proved to be effective, yet no clinical option is available due to the lack of a suitable mode of administration. In this work, we propose a unique concept of NIR dual-triggered drug release from black phosphorus (BP)-based implantable intraocular lens (IOL) for controlled drug release and chemo-photothermal combination therapy of PCO. Here, IOL is used as a "reservoir" of doxorubicin-loaded black phosphorus (BP-

Intraocular cytokines imbalance in congenital cataract and its impact on posterior capsule opacification.

BACKGROUND: Congenital cataract is of particular interest because of the variability of etiologies and the inflammatory reaction that are often observed. The aim of the study was to describe intraocular levels of various inflammation-related cytokines of patients with congenital cataract and to study their correlations with clinical determinants. METHODS: We followed a cohort of 18 patients (18 eyes) with congenital cataract from a University hospital and measured levels of various inflammation-related cytokines in the aqueous humor of patients with congenital cataract, and compared these lev

Laser-triggered intraocular implant to induce photodynamic therapy for posterior capsule opacification prevention.

Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is one of the main reasons for loss of vision again after cataract surgery. In this study, intraocular lenses were modified with indocyanine green (ICG) and sealed up with PLGA to form long-term intraocular implants (ICG-IOL). When triggered by laser, ICG-IOL would induce photodynamic therapy (PDT). In-vitro cell viability assay and scratch wound healing assay demonstrated that ICG-IOL could effectively inhibit HLEpiC proliferation and migration without causing damage to the cells far away from it. Laser attenuation test indicated that ICG-IOL could be app
