Genome-wide identification and expression analysis of chickpea U-box E3 ligases identifies CaPUB4 and CaPUB16 as candidate responsive genes for abiotic stress tolerance.

U-box E3 ubiquitin ligases play a crucial role in post-translational protein modification, stress signaling, and cellular adaptation in plants. In this study, 38 non-redundant CaPUB genes were identified from the chickpea (Cicer arietinum) genome and characterized for their phylogenetic relationships, domain architecture, gene structures, and expression profiles. Synteny and gene ontology analyses revealed evolutionary conservation with Lotus japonicus and Arabidopsis thaliana, and functional involvement in processes such as ubiquitination, signaling, and stress responses. Endophytic Bacillus strains enhance chickpea growth and performance under controlled and field conditions.

Endophytic Bacillus species are known to improve legume symbiosis and plant performance through an array of mechanisms. This study evaluated the potential of endophytic Bacillus strains (B. firmus, B. subtilis, and B. tequilensis) to promote growth and productivity of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L) grown under rainfed conditions. Among the Bacillus strains evaluated for in vitro plant growth-promoting traits, B. firmus exhibited the highest potential for phosphate solubilization (pH drop to 5.0) and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) production (28.9 PPM). Seed biopriming with Bacillus strains enhanced

Combined application of rhizobacteria, organic and inorganic amendments reduce lead and cadmium uptake and improve growth of chickpea by modulating physiology and antioxidant status.

Due to a lack of high-quality water, farmers have been compelled to use sewage water for irrigation, contaminating agricultural soils with multiple heavy metals. For the remediation of contaminated soil, plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), pressmud (PM), and iron (III) oxide were used to improve the growth and phytostabilization potential of chickpea grown in contaminated soil. Contaminated soil was collected from a nearby field, receiving sewage and factory water over the last 60 years. Chickpea seeds were inoculated with metal-tolerant (lead and cadmium) rhizobacterial and rhizobial

Anti-hyperlipidemic and ameliorative effects of chickpea starch and resistant starch in mice with high fat diet induced obesity are associated with their multi-scale structural characteristics.

Chickpea starches were isolated from both untreated (UC-S) and conventionally cooked seeds (CC-S), and their multi-scale structural characteristics and in vivo physiological effects on controlling hyperlipidemia in high fat diet induced obese mice were compared with their corresponding resistant starch (RS) fractions obtained by an in vitro enzymatic isolation method (UC-RS and CC-RS). The degree of order/degree of double helix in Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was in the following order: CC-RS > UC-RS > CC-S > UC-S, which was consistent with the trend observed for relative crystallin

Affinity purification of copper chelating peptides from chickpea protein hydrolysates.

Chickpea protein hydrolysates obtained with alcalase and flavourzyme were used for purification of copper chelating peptides by affinity chromatography using copper immobilized on solid supports. The chelating activity of purified peptides was indirectly measured by the inhibition of beta-carotene oxidation in the presence of copper. Two protein hydrolysates, obtained after 10 and 100 min of hydrolysis, were the most inhibitory of beta-carotene oxidation. Purified copper chelating peptides from these protein hydrolysates contained 19.7 and 35.1% histidine, respectively, in comparison to 2.7 an

Understanding the kinetics and mechanism of heat-induced aggregation of chickpea globulin.

The thermally induced aggregation kinetics and mechanisms of the most abundant chickpea globulin (CGb) were comprehensively evaluated. The thermal reaction order of CGb at 70 °C increased with rising salt concentration, whereas at 80 °C and 90 °C, the reaction order decreased as salt ion concentration increased, exhibiting complex multistep reaction behavior. The lowest aggregation rate was observed at 20 mM salt concentration regardless of temperature. The primary intermolecular forces within CGb thermal aggregates are hydrogen bonds and disulfide bonds, while prolonged thermal treatment enha

Food-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis to chickpea in a 17-year-old female: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Food-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis is a subtype of anaphylaxis and, although rare, it is an important condition to be familiar with as it can ultimately lead to death. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of food-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis in a 17-year-old white girl due to chickpea. She had a history of anaphylaxis after eating crackers and hummus before exercising. Skin prick testing and serum-specific immunoglobulin E level confirmed chickpea to be the causative allergen. CONCLUSIONS: This case demonstrates the challenge in identifying specific causative

Removal and recovery of lead(II) from single and multimetal (Cd, Cu, Ni, Zn) solutions by crop milling waste (black gram husk).

The study reports removal of heavy metals when present singly or in binary and ternary systems by the milling agrowaste of Cicer arientinum (chickpea var. black gram) as the biosorbent. The biosorbent removed heavy metal ions efficiently from aqueous solutions with the selectivity order of Pb>Cd>Zn>Cu>Ni. The biosorption of metal ions by black gram husk (BGH) increased as the initial metal concentration increased. Biosorption equilibrium was established within 30 min, which was well described by the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms. The maximum amount of heavy metals (qmax) adsorbe

Impact of Germination on the Microstructural and Physicochemical Properties of Different Legume Types.

The microstructural and physicochemical compositions of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), lentil (Lens culinaris Merr.), soybean (Glycine max L.), chickpea (Cicer aretinium L.) and lupine (Lupinus albus) were investigated over 2 and 4 days of germination. Different changes were noticed during microscopic observations (Stereo Microscope, SEM) of the legume seeds subjected to germination, mostly related to the breakages of the seed structure. The germination caused the increase in protein content for bean, lentil, and chickpea and of ash content for lentil, soybean and chickpea. Germination increased t

A protocol for high-quality genomic DNA extraction from legumes.

Current DNA extraction protocols, which require liquid nitrogen, lyophilization and considerable infrastructure in terms of instrumentation, often impede the application of biotechnological tools in less researched crops in laboratories in developing countries. We modified and optimized the existing CTAB method for plant genomic DNA extraction by avoiding liquid nitrogen usage and lyophilization. DNA was extracted directly from freshly harvested leaves ground in pre-heated CTAB buffer. Chloroform:isoamyl alcohol (24:1) and RNase treatments followed by single-purification step decontaminated th

Sulfide ions as modulators of metal-thiolate cluster size in a plant metallothionein.

Metallothioneins are small cysteine-rich proteins coordinating various transition metal ions preferably with the electron configuration d(10). They are ubiquitously present in all phyla, and next to phytochelatins they represent a successful molecular concept for high-capacity metal ion binding. Recent studies showed the incorporation of sulfide ions into the metal-thiolate cluster of metallothionein 2 from the plant Cicer arietinum (cicMT2) increasing the cadmium binding capacity and stability of the cluster. In the present work, the sulfide-induced structural changes accompanying the cluster

A Chickpea NCR Peptide Suppresses Postharvest Alternaria alternata Infection by Disrupting Fungal Membranes, Mitochondria and Respiration.

Postharvest fungal diseases cause substantial losses in horticultural crops and are commonly managed using chemical fungicides, which raise concerns regarding resistance development and environmental impact. Plant-derived antifungal peptides represent a promising alternative for sustainable disease control. Here, we evaluated the antifungal activity and mode of action of three nodule-specific cysteine-rich (NCR) peptides-NCR044, NCR192 and NCR13_PFV2-against major postharvest fungal pathogens. Among the peptides tested, NCR13_PFV2 exhibited the strongest inhibitory activity against Alternaria

The novel nano-electrospray delivery of curcumin via ultrasound assisted Balangu (Lallemantia royleana) hydrocolloid-chickpea protein interaction.

This research examines the development of complexes between chickpea protein isolate and Balangu seed gum using ultrasound (200 W, 350 W, 500 W, 650 W, and 800 W) to curcumin delivery by electrospray. Higher ultrasound powers (650 W and 800 W) enhanced the formation of complexes, as confirmed by FTIR and XRD. Complexes treated at 650 W demonstrated optimal solution properties for electrospraying, featuring the lowest surface tension of 31.79 mN/m and the highest zeta potential an electrical conductivity of -68.46 mV, and 1896 μS/cm, respectively. The electrospray effectively produced nanoparti

Leaf transpiration plays a role in phosphorus acquisition among a large set of chickpea genotypes.

Low availability of inorganic phosphorus (P) is considered a major constraint for crop productivity worldwide. A unique set of 266 chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) genotypes, originating from 29 countries and with diverse genetic background, were used to study P-use efficiency. Plants were grown in pots containing sterilized river sand supplied with P at a rate of 10 μg P g-1 soil as FePO4 , a poorly soluble form of P. The results showed large genotypic variation in plant growth, shoot P content, physiological P-use efficiency, and P-utilization efficiency in response to low P supply. Further inv

Legume Allergens Pea, Chickpea, Lentil, Lupine and Beyond.

PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: In the last decade, an increasing trend towards a supposedly healthier vegan diet could be observed. However, recently, more cases of allergic reactions to plants and plant-based products such as meat-substitution products, which are often prepared with legumes, were reported. Here, we provide the current knowledge on legume allergen sources and the respective single allergens. We answer the question of which legumes beside the well-known food allergen sources peanut and soybean should be considered for diagnostic and therapeutic measures. RECENT FINDINGS: These "non-pr

Copper amine oxidase expression in defense responses to wounding and Ascochyta rabiei invasion.

Wounding chickpea (Cicer arietinum) internodes or cotyledons resulted in an increase in the steady-state level of copper amine oxidase (CuAO) expression both locally and systemically. Dissection of the molecular mechanisms controlling CuAO expression indicated that jasmonic acid worked as a potent inducer of the basal and wound-inducible CuAO expression, whereas salicylic acid and abscisic acid caused a strong reduction of the wound-induced CuAO expression, without having any effect on the basal levels. Epicotyl treatment with the CuAO mechanism-based inhibitor 2-bromoethylamine decreased hydr

Novel Method for Rapid Screening of Chickpea for Combined Dry Root Rot Disease and Osmotic Stress.

Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.), confronts substantial challenges from the emerging pathogenic fungus Macrophomina phaseolina (Tassi) Goid, causing dry root rot (DRR) disease. Chickpea plants severely affected by combined DRR and drought stress. Currently sick plot and sick pot method are utilized for germplasm screening to identify tolerant genotypes. These methods are time-consuming; therefore, we propose a novel methodology for the rapid screening of chickpea under combined DRR and osmotic stress conditions. This chapter introduces an adept high-throughput phenotyping methodology, conducted w
