The association between cardiovascular disease and cochlear function in older adults.

The purpose of this research was to evaluate the relation between self-reported cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cochlear function in older adults. The Epidemiology of Hearing Loss Study (EHLS) is an ongoing population-based study of hearing loss and its risk factors in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. As part of the EHLS questionnaire, participants were asked about their cardiovascular medical history. CVD history was determined from questions regarding history of angina, myocardial infarction (MI), and stroke. Questions about the use of antihypertensive medication and blood pressure measurements deter

Effects of glycerol on cochlear frequency selectivity in patients with Menière's disease.

During transtympanic electrocochleography, action potential (AP) tuning curves were derived as a measure of cochlear frequency selectivity. In 18 out of 21 patients with symptoms of Menière's disease, a poor frequency selectivity was observed. In 12 subjects the effects on frequency selectivity of oral glycerol were measured, and in 5 patients AP tuning curves indicated an improvement in sharpness of tuning by a factor of 1.5-2.5. These changes started approximately 30 min after oral glycerol administration. In 2 subjects there was a deterioration in AP tuning. In 5 patients no significant cha

Cochlear Neural Degeneration Is Widespread in Ménière's Disease: A Temporal Bone Study.

PURPOSE: Ménière's disease presents with endolymphatic hydrops and disproportionately poor word-recognition compared to other forms of sensorineural hearing loss, yet the underlying patterns of cochlear degeneration are not well defined. This study aimed to characterize cochlear pathology in Ménières, compare it to age-matched controls and clinically unaffected contralateral ears, and evaluate how hydrops severity and clinical endotypes relate to tissue degeneration. METHODS: We analyzed 97 human cochleas, including 43 Ménière's ears, 10 contralateral (clinically unaffected) ears, and 44 age-

Migraine and cochlear disease: A 2-sample bidirectional Mendelian randomized study.

This study aimed to explore the potential causal relationship between migraine and cochlear disease by using a bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) approach. We searched datasets related to migraine in the FinnGen database and genome-wide association studies catalog. We conducted 2-sample MR analyses. Instrumental variables were selected based on stringent criteria, including genome-wide significance, clumping to ensure independence, and exclusion of palindromic single nucleotide polymorphisms and those associated with confounders. The primary MR analysis employed the inverse-variance we

fMRI evaluation of cochlear implant candidacy in diffuse cortical cytomegalovirus disease.

Congenital cytomegalovirus infection is the most frequent nongenetic cause of pediatric hearing loss in the United States, affecting approximately 8,000 children each year. Due in part to variable cytomegalic involvement of the auditory cortex, cochlear implantation outcomes have varied widely. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has the potential to assist in determining candidacy for cochlear implantation through the detection of intact auditory pathways including the cortex. We report a case of a 21-month-old girl with cytomegalovirus-related deafness and diffuse white matter invol

Cochlear Implantation in Sickle Cell Disease: A Systematic Review of Feasibility and Outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is associated with systemic complications, including sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) from microvascular occlusion and chronic inflammation. Although reports link SCD to higher rates of SNHL, current evidence is limited by small sample size, varied audiologic methods, and lack of standardized screening. This systematic review summarizes available literature on SNHL and cochlear implantation (CI) in SCD. METHODS: A literature search of PubMed MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and CINAHL identified 79 citations. After removal of duplicates, 35 rec

Pediatric Ménière's disease with disassociated cochlear and vestibular symptoms: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Typical Ménière's disease (MD) rarely occurs in childhood. Compared to adults, age-associated changes in vestibular function can occur during infancy and childhood. Previous case reports may have lacked some audiovestibular tests in children. It is worthwhile to follow a child with MD to observe how vertigo and hearing loss could progress under an insufficient vestibular system. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 14-year-old pediatric patient with disassociated episodes between vertigo and hearing loss was finally diagnosed with MD. He was diagnosed with probable MD due to lack of objective evid

MR Imaging of Cochlear Modiolus and Endolymphatic Hydrops in Patients With Menière's Disease.

Background: Menière's disease (MD) is an inner ear disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of spontaneous vertigo, unilateral low-frequency sensorineural hearing loss, tinnitus, and aural fullness. Current diagnosis still often has to rely on subjective and audiometric criteria only, although endolymphatic hydrops is recognized as the pathophysiological substrate of the disease, having been demonstrated in anatomical pathological studies and by magnetic resonance (MRI). The modiolus has a close functional and anatomical relationship with the cochlear nerve and membranous labyrinth and can
