Synchronizing Brain Rhythms to Improve Cognition.

Impaired cognition is common in many neuropsychiatric disorders and severely compromises quality of life. Synchronous electrophysiological rhythms represent a core mechanism for sculpting communication dynamics among large-scale brain networks that underpin cognition and its breakdown in neuropsychiatric disorders. Here, we review an emerging neuromodulation technology called transcranial alternating current stimulation that has shown remarkable early results in rapidly improving various domains of human cognition by modulating properties of rhythmic network synchronization. Future noninvasive

(Neuro) Peptides, Physical Activity, and Cognition.

Regular physical activity (PA) improves cognitive functions, prevents brain atrophy, and delays the onset of cognitive decline, dementia, and Alzheimer's disease. Presently, there are no specific recommendations for PA producing positive effects on brain health and little is known on its mediators. PA affects production and release of several peptides secreted from peripheral and central tissues, targeting receptors located in the central nervous system (CNS). This review will provide a summary of the current knowledge on the association between PA and cognition with a focus on the role of (ne

Microglial regulation of satiety and cognition.

Microglia have been known for decades as key immune cells that shape the central nervous system (CNS) during development and respond to brain pathogens and injury in adult life. Recent findings now suggest that these cells also play a highly complex role in several other functions of the CNS. In this review, we provide a brief overview of the established microglial functions in development and disease. We also discuss emerging research suggesting that microglia are important for both cognitive function and the regulation of food intake. With respect to cognitive function, current data suggest

Consensus Paper: Cerebellum and Social Cognition.

The traditional view on the cerebellum is that it controls motor behavior. Although recent work has revealed that the cerebellum supports also nonmotor functions such as cognition and affect, only during the last 5 years it has become evident that the cerebellum also plays an important social role. This role is evident in social cognition based on interpreting goal-directed actions through the movements of individuals (social "mirroring") which is very close to its original role in motor learning, as well as in social understanding of other individuals' mental state, such as their intentions,

Corollary Discharge for Action and Cognition.

In motor systems, a copy of the movement command known as corollary discharge is broadcast to other regions of the brain to warn them of the impending movement. The premise of this review is that the concept of corollary discharge may generalize in revealing ways to the brain's cognitive systems. An oculomotor pathway from the brain stem to frontal cortex provides a well-established example of how corollary discharge is instantiated for sensorimotor processing. Building on causal evidence from inactivation of the pathway, we motivate forward models as a tool for understanding the contributions

Cognition and psychopathology in myoclonus-dystonia.

OBJECTIVE: (1) To study the neuropsychological and psychopathological profile in myoclonus-dystonia (M-D) patients with and without a mutation in the DYT11 gene. (2) To explore whether cognitive and psychiatric impairments are related to severity and duration of motor symptoms. Herewith, this study may help to clarify whether neuropsychological and psychiatric symptoms are associated with the DYT11 mutation or are secondary to the burden of motor impairments that originated in early childhood. METHODS: Extensive batteries of neuropsychological tests and psychiatric questionnaires were adminis

Decision-making cognition in neurodegenerative diseases.

A large proportion of human social neuroscience research has focused on the issue of decision-making. Impaired decision-making is a symptomatic feature of a number of neurodegenerative diseases, but the nature of these decision-making deficits depends on the particular disease. Thus, examining the qualitative differences in decision-making impairments associated with different neurodegenerative diseases could provide valuable information regarding the underlying neural basis of decision-making. Nevertheless, few comparative reports of decision-making across patient groups exist. In this Review

From vasotocin to stress and cognition.

Sex and stress hormones coordinate experience and behaviour with physiological regulations. In the brain the sex hormones act to promote the repertoire of affiliative and reproductive behaviours. Stress hormones target in particular brain circuits underlying emotional arousal and cognition. To exert these actions the hormones operate in concert with neuropeptide secreting systems. Here I will discuss three examples of hormone action on brain and behaviour. First in the song bird manipulation of brain vasotocin promotes acquisition of a stable stereotyped song pattern. Second in mammal's centra

Social cognition in "pure" delusional disorder.

Introduction. Delusional disorders are characterised by monothematic, "encapsulated" and incorrigible false beliefs and misinterpretations of social signals. Due to the rarity of cases with "pure" delusional disorder (DD) in clinical settings most studies of social cognition in delusional patients have focused on patients with paranoid schizophrenia. In the present study we sought to examine emotion recognition, theory of mind abilities, and pragmatic language comprehension in patients with delusional disorder. Methods. Social cognition was assessed in 21 patients recruited over a 3-year perio

Cognition, mood disorders, and sex hormones.

Macaques (Macaca spp.) are useful models to evaluate effects of ovarian sex steroids and selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) on mood and cognitive function due to similarities to women in their reproductive and central nervous systems. The results of nonhuman primate studies support the hypothesis that estrogen mediates specific aspects of attention and memory, yet much work is needed to understand which cognitive processes are affected, whether natural versus surgical menopause effects are different, and the interaction of age and ovarian senescence on cognitive function. This know

The role of nociceptin in cognition.

The physiological role of the modulation via the nociceptin receptor is still unclear. Here we report the role of the nociceptin system in learning and memory. Nociceptin-knockout mice possess greater learning ability in the water maze task, show an enhanced latent learning in the water finding task, have better memory in the passive avoidance task, and further, show larger long-term potentiation in the hippocampal CA1 region than wild-type mice. Nociceptin itself induces an impairment of the passive avoidance task in wild-type mice. This impairment is reversed by naloxone benzoylhydrazone (Na

Whisker-based spatial cognition in mice.

Object localization has been well characterized in the visual and auditory systems, yet how tactile inputs are transformed into a percept of object location in external space remains unclear. Here, we developed a whisker-based categorization task in head-restrained mice that requires judgments of object position in the horizontal plane. Mice categorized object positions with minimal bias relative to the task category boundary and achieved submillimeter spatial acuity by sampling the object with multiple whiskers, a process that depended on the whisker-related primary somatosensory cortex. Hyperphosphorylated Tau and Cognition in Epilepsy.

In light of the growing interest in the bidirectional relationship between epilepsy and dementia, this review aims to provide an overview of the role of hyperphosphorylated tau (pTau) in cognition in human epilepsy. A literature search identified five relevant studies. All of them examined pTau burden in surgical biopsy specimens from patients with temporal lobe epilepsy. The prevalence of pTau reported across the five studies, encompassing a total of 142 patients, ranged from 3.5% to 95%. Findings also varied regarding the location of pTau in the hippocampus and/or temporal cortex. Two of fiv

Social Cognition in Opioid Use Disorder.

Background: Opioid use disorder (OUD) is associated with significant functional impairment and neurocognitive dysfunction, but only a handful of studies have investigated social cognitive abilities in this condition. This study aimed to investigate facial emotion recognition accuracy/biases and two different aspects of theory of mind (ToM) (ToM-decoding vs ToM-reasoning) in people with recovered OUD. Methods: The participants included 32 people with recovered OUD who were on Buprenorphine + Naloxone (B/N) maintenance treatment and 32 healthy controls. In addition to neurocognitive tasks, both

Cognition Assessment Technologies on Deaf People.

In recent years there has been a growing interest in research about the different ways of processing and consolidating cognition in deaf people. It is known that hearing loss can lead to differences in some executive functions like control inhibitory or working memory. This literature review describes executive functions in deaf people and how they could be evaluated through technological devices complementing traditional assessments, like neuropsychological batteries. We identified biometric devices, digital and physical interfaces, and software from the literature, whose goal is to design or

Social cognition in individuals born preterm.

Faces hold a substantial value for effective social interactions and sharing. Covering faces with masks, due to COVID-19 regulations, may lead to difficulties in using social signals, in particular, in individuals with neurodevelopmental conditions. Daily-life social participation of individuals who were born preterm is of immense importance for their quality of life. Here we examined face tuning in individuals (aged 12.79 ± 1.89 years) who were born preterm and exhibited signs of periventricular leukomalacia (PVL), a dominant form of brain injury in preterm birth survivors. For assessing the

Cognition and functionality in delusional disorder.

BACKGROUND: Even if neurocognition is known to affect functional outcomes in schizophrenia, no previous study has explored the impact of cognition on functionality in delusional disorder (DD). We aimed to assess the effect of clinical characteristics, symptom dimensions and neuropsychological performance on psychosocial functioning and self-perceived functional impairment in DD. METHODS: Seventy-five patients with a SCID-I confirmed diagnosis of DD underwent neurocognitive testing using a neuropsychological battery examining verbal memory, attention, working memory and executive functions. Statins and Cognition in Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between statins and cognition in Parkinson's disease (PD) is poorly understood. OBJECTIVES: Analyses were performed to determine associations between statin use and cross-sectional and longitudinal cognitive performance in PD. METHODS: Neuropsychological tests, medication logs, and ratings of functional abilities were collected from 313 PD participants longitudinally. RESULTS: At baseline, statin users (SU; N = 129) were older, more likely male, and had shorter PD duration than non-statin users (NSU; N = 184). In Cross-sectional analysis, SU performed better on
