Mixed neuroendocrine-non-neuroendocrine neoplasms of ascending colon: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Neuroendocrine tumor (NET) that develops in the right-sided colon is relatively rare. Coexistence of adenocarcinoma and NET is extremely rare, and such cases are called mixed neuroendocrine-non-neuroendocrine neoplasm (MiNEN). PRESENTATION OF CASE: Colonoscopy in an 85-year-old woman for an anemia examination indicated laterally spreading tumor-nongranular (LST-NG) in the transverse colon. Colonoscopy and endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) showed that the depth of the tumor invasion was deep submucosal. The tumor localization was diagnosed as transverse colon close to the hepatic

Postrenal Transplant Metastatic Colonic Neoplasm: Posttransplant Lymphoproliferative Disorder or Adenocarcinoma?

Transplant recipients are vulnerable to a horde of infections and neoplastic conditions due to immunosuppression. Posttransplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) is a condition unique to the transplant recipient occurring due to monoclonal lymphocytic proliferation. It may affect any organ system with reportedly highest incidence in the gastrointestinal tract. The incidence of adenocarcinoma of the colon, however, has not been shown to be uniformly higher in transplant recipients. We report here an unusual case of adenocarcinoma of the ascending colon presenting with liver, lymph node and s

Colonic-type adenocarcinoma of the base of the tongue: a case report of a rare neoplasm.

Lingual adenocarcinomas (ADC), either primary or metastatic to the tongue are extraordinarily rare neoplasms. Primary lingual adenocarcinomas are primarily of minor salivary gland origin. Two cases of primary colonic-type adenocarcinomas of the base of the tongue were recently reported for the first time in the English literature. We present an additional case of lingual intestinal-type adenocarcinoma with mucinous features that occurred in association with cervical node metastasis and discuss the clinicopathologic features and histogenetic aspects of this rare entity.

Leiomyosarcoma of the colon: a second malignant neoplasm after treatment for a Wilms' tumor.

Leiomyosarcoma of the colon is a rare malignancy. We report the case of a 33-year-old woman with a leiomyosarcoma of the colon occurring as an intussusception 30 years after receiving abdominal irradiation for a Wilms' tumor. A review of the prior and current treatment for Wilms' tumor is discussed, as well as the association between second malignancies and abdominal irradiation. Leiomyosarcoma of the colon usually presents in the fifth and sixth decades of life and is more common in men. The most common symptom is pain. Ninety per cent are diagnosed at surgery for treatment of bleeding, perfo

A prospective study of the prevalence of colonic neoplasms in asymptomatic patients with an age-related risk.

This study was designed to determine the prevalence of colorectal neoplasia in healthy, asymptomatic adults with an age-related risk for colorectal neoplasia. Ninety patients were studied with air contrast barium enema and colonoscopy. The study population included 61 males and 21 females, with an age range of 51-82 yr (65 +/- 2 yr). Adenomatous polyps were found in 27% of males and 14% of females or 24% of patients overall. Sixty-six percent of these neoplasms were above the rectosigmoid junction and the mean size of the polyps was 6.5 +/- 1.2 mm. In two patients, carcinoma was discovered. A

DNA Methylation and Mutation of Small Colonic Neoplasms in Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn's Colitis: Implications for Surveillance.

BACKGROUND: Stool DNA testing in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) may detect colorectal cancer and advanced precancers with high sensitivity; less is known about the presence of DNA markers in small IBD lesions, their association with metachronous neoplasia, or contribution to stool test positivity. METHODS: At a single center in 2 blinded phases, we assayed methylated bone morphogenic protein 3, methylated N-Myc downstream-regulated gene 4, and mutant KRAS in DNA extracted from paraffin-embedded benign lesions, and matched control tissues of patients with IBD, who were followed

[A synchronous association of a double colonic adenocarcinoma and hypernephroma: an infrequent case of multiple primary neoplasms].

It has been reported that exceptional association exists between primary colon cancer and hypernephroma. In this paper we are reporting a case of a male patient carrying an hypernephroma synchronous with a proximal colonic adenocarcinoma in addition to a second adenocarcinoma, growing on a tubular adenoma, nearly of first. These findings get seen as partially coincidental with some features of the cancer family syndrome (Lynch syndrome II), and we have considered that genetics conditions, like those of Lynch syndrome II, could to explain some multiple neoplasms in patients carrying then.

Successful Simultaneous Treatment of Benign Stricture and Colonic Neoplasm Arising from Colonic Interposition after Esophagectomy: A Case Report.

Colonic interposition is the main procedure used in esophageal reconstruction. We report a rare case of simultaneous treatment of an anastomotic site stricture and a neoplasm in the interpositioned colon. A 69-year-old female visited our outpatient clinic with symptoms of progressive dysphagia for 1 year. At the age of 30 years, the patient underwent esophagectomy with retrosternal colonic interposition because of severe esophageal burns after chemical ingestion. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed stricture at the anastomosis site and a 10-mm flat elevated high-grade dysplasia in the in

A challenging diagnosis of mesenchymal neoplasm of the colon: colonic dedifferentiated liposarcoma with lymph node metastases-a case report and review of the literature.

PURPOSE: We report a case of primitive colonic dedifferentiated liposarcoma along with lymph node metastases. METHODS: The patient's clinical, radiologic, surgical, and histologic data were reviewed, as well as the literature on colonic dedifferentiated liposarcoma with a focus on the incidence of lymph node metastasis in gastrointestinal sarcomas and on the differential diagnosis with other spindle cell tumors in the gastrointestinal tract. RESULTS: A 53-year-old man was referred to our hospital with a 3 year-history of pain on the right back that was refractory to drugs. He performed an ab

Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm penetrating sigmoid colon: A case report.

Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) is principally characterized by low-grade cytology without evidence of invasion to other organs. We report a LAMN surgical case whose appendiceal tumor penetrated the sigmoid colon wall. An 87-year-old man was referred for endoscopic resection (ER) of a colon polyp. Despite four ERs over 5 years, the polyp recurred at the same site. Laparoscopic surgery revealed a dilated appendix firmly attached to the sigmoid colon. We performed en bloc resection of both the sigmoid colon and appendix without tumor exposure. The histopathological evaluation show

[Distal hyperplastic polyps as a marker for advanced neoplasm of the proximal colon. Our experience].

BACKGROUND AND AIM: While, several studies indicate that there is an association between proximal and distal colorectal adenomas, no agreement seems to be between the presence of distal hyperplastic polyps and proximal neoplasia. The aim of this study was to investigate, retrospectively, the possible correlation between the distal hyperplastic polyps and proximal colorectal neoplasia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In our GI Unit, from 1st February 2006 to 24 November 2006, we performed 142 polypectomy. Patients were 36 females and 80 males, with a median age of 66 years [range: 38-87 years]. All of

[Appendiceal mucocele associated with colonic neoplasm. Report of 2 cases and review of the literature].

Appendiceal mucocele is a rare entity frequently associated with colorectal cancer. We report two cases of mucocele associated with colorectal tumours. The first case (male, 64 yrs) is an appendiceal mucinous cystadenoma found incidentally during surgery for colon cancer. There is no evidence of disease after a 4-year follow-up. The second case (male, 66 yrs) is a mucocele associated with mucosal hyperplasia that was found during surgery for acute appendicitis with a periappendicular abscess. Endoscopic follow-up showed a rectal adenocarcinoma that was initially treated with local excision wit

Risk factors of advanced metachronous neoplasms in surveillance after colon cancer resection.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Regular surveillance colonoscopy after colon cancer resection is recommended for detecting metachronous adenoma and cancer. However, risk factors for metachronous neoplasms have not been fully evaluated. We aimed to assess risk factors for advanced metachronous neoplasms during surveillance colonoscopy after colon cancer resection. METHODS: Patients who underwent curative colectomy for nonmetastatic colon cancer between January 2002 and December 2012 were evaluated and followed up to December 2017. RESULTS: A total of 293 patients were enrolled in this study. Among these, 17

Radical appendectomy as an alternative to right colon resection in patients with epithelial appendiceal neoplasms.

OBJECTIVE: Appendectomy is an extremely common surgical procedure usually performed for an inflammatory process within this organ. Upon occasion, the pathology within the appendix is a neoplastic process which requires definitive oncologic management. METHODS: The optimal management strategies for appendiceal neoplasms were reviewed and pertinent literature critically evaluated. The technology for appendectomy for an inflammatory process and an appendectomy for a neoplastic process were compared and contrasted. RESULTS: A new surgical procedure called "radical appendectomy" was described and

[Hypercoagulable state due to acquired protein C resistance, harbinger of colonic neoplasm?].

Hereditary activated protein C resistance (aPCR) has been identified as an important risk factor for the occurrence of thromboembolic events. It is most frequently hereditary, and caused by a point mutation in factor V, named Factor V Leiden (FVL), which renders it resistant to the anticoagulant action of circulating protein C. However, aPCR can also be found in absence of FVL (acquired aPCR), associated to lupus anticoagulant, pregnancy or neoplasms. We report a case of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) in a 54 year-old woman, with no digestive symptoms and negative screening for biochemical tumor

[Intestinal occlusion due to pancreatitis mimicking stenosing neoplasm of the splenic angle of the colon].

Colonic involvement in patients with severe acute pancreatitis or chronic pancreatitis is common and complications such as paralytic ileus, segmental necrosis and pancreatic-colonic fistulae have been described. However, mechanical occlusion of the colon due to pancreatitis is infrequent. We present the case of a 45-year-old man with occlusion of the colon secondary to asymptomatic pancreatitis mimicking a locally advanced stenosing neoplasm of the splenic angle. Ten years prior to the present episode the patient had presented acute alcoholic pancreatitis complicated by a pseudocyst requiring
