Communicative disorders in Wernicke's aphasics.

The purpose of this study was to analyze some aspects of communicative capacities in 25 predominantly Wernicke's aphasics. The patients with moderate and mild deficits were compared with severely affected patients. Answers in a standard interview were studied for two aspects: answer adequacy to question and conceptual thinking fluency. An initial examination was carried out in the first stage of aphasia and the second examination took place after 3 or 4 months since onset. Both parameters showed more important deficits in the group with severe disorders at onset. An improvement of communicativ

The evolution of ADHD: a disorder of communication?

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most commonly diagnosed psychiatric condition. Many believe that the central disability is impaired inhibition, which leads to reduced abilities in social skills, self-control, organization and time management. The behaviors identified by clinicians as problematic--inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity--have been incorporated into several evolutionary models as selectively adaptive cognitive skills for surviving the challenges of a variable Pleistocene environment. We propose that the "disabilities" exhibited by individuals with ADHD

Somatization disorder in a community population.

The data recently collected in the Piedmont region of North Carolina as part of the National Institute of Mental Health Epidemiologic Catchment Area Program were used to examine somatization disorder in a community population. The authors found an adjusted prevalence of 0.38% for somatization disorder diagnosed according to the Diagnostic Interview Schedule and DSM-III. Respondents with somatization disorder demonstrated demographic characteristics (female, unmarried, nonwhite, from a rural area, less educated) that are consistent with findings from past clinical and epidemiologic studies of s

Training of Speech and Language Pathologists in Neurogenic Disorders: Enhancing Expertise and Awareness in Communication and Swallowing Disorders.

PURPOSE: Previous studies conducted in Türkiye (Turkey) have revealed that the level of knowledge and awareness regarding swallowing disorders in neurogenic conditions among speech and language pathology students or graduates is relatively low. Furthermore, differences in curricula across various institutions highlight the need for standardized education in this area. This study aimed to assess changes in the knowledge and awareness levels of speech and language pathologists, as well as their opinions about the training, by organizing an educational programme focused on neurogenic communicatio

The complexities of designing therapy for Māori living with stroke-related communication disorders.

Stroke-related communication disorders can have a substantial impact on Māori whānau (extended family). Timely and appropriate speech-language therapy is required, but there are many challenges in providing this. In this article we discuss the need for a kaupapa Māori approach to speech-language therapy that is designed by Māori for Māori, and undertaken in a Māori way. We report the results of a literature review that revealed a small but significant body of literature describing Māori experiences of stroke, aphasia and speech-language therapy, and evidence that a Māori-specific therapy progr

The application of the ICF in cognitive-communication disorders following traumatic brain injury.

The purpose of this article is to discuss the usefulness of the World Health Organization's International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) for describing cognitive-communication disorders. Prominent issues influencing our appreciation of cognitive-communication disorders are elaborated. These are issues with terminology, assessment (including the role of supporting cognitive processes), and the sociocultural context of the individual with cognitive-communication disorders following traumatic brain injury (TBI). This is followed by a demonstration of how the ICF framew

Childhood autism: deficits of communication and symbolic development. I. Distinctions from language disorders.

The present paper reviews, outlines, and explores the literature concerned with the speech-language disorder of childhood autism. The problems of communication of the autistic child are compared and contrasted with those of children with a variety of other language disorders (e.g. receptive developmental dysphasia). Based upon the review of normal preverbal communicatory and symbolic development, it is concluded that childhood autism involves a pervasive language disorder encompassing communication in general, as well as certain symbolic-representational abilities necessary for language. Intercellular communication via exosomes: A new paradigm in the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative disorders.

Neurodegenerative disorders are one of the leading causes of death and disability and pose a great economic burden on healthcare systems. Generally, these neurodegenerative disorders have a progressive deterioration in neural function and structure, and deposition of misfolded proteins commonly occurs, such as amyloid-β in AD and α-synuclein in PD. However, there exists a special class of exosomes, which acts like a transmitter and enhances communication between cells. The present review discusses the significant role of exosomes in neurodegenerative diseases, with a focus on Amyotrophic later

Clinical diagnosis and communication in functional neurological disorders: a survey among Italian neurologists.

INTRODUCTION: Functional neurological symptom disorder (FND), including functional motor disorders (FMD) and psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES), is a common yet under-recognized condition, often associated with diagnostic uncertainty. This national survey investigated how Italian neurologists apply validated clinical signs and communication strategies in FND diagnosis. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was distributed to approximately 2,700 members of three Italian neurological societies. The questionnaire assessed demographic and professional characteristics, the frequency of use of s

Profiles of language and communication abilities in adolescents with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Language and communication are largely understudied among youth with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). Findings have been mixed, and have generally focused on more severely affected (i.e., children with FAS alone) or younger children. This study aimed to elucidate the profiles of language (i.e., receptive, expressive, general language) and communication (i.e., functional, social) abilities in adolescents with FASD. METHOD: Participants aged 12-17 years with (AE = 31) and without (CON = 29) prenatal alcohol exposure were included. Receptive and expressive language were measur

Occurrence of communication and swallowing problems in neurological disorders: analysis of forty patients.

BACKGROUND: Communication and swallowing problems are common as a result of neurological conditions like stroke, traumatic brain injury, neoplasms of the nervous systems, viral encephalitis, diseases affecting neuromuscular junction and neuro degenerative conditions. The most frequently encountered problems are dysarthria, aphasia, dysphagia and apraxia of speech. OBJECTIVES: Although these disorders are mentioned in literature, very few studies describing the occurrence in different neurological conditions are available in Indian context. Hence, a need was felt to carry out such a study. ME

Generativity abilities predict communication deficits but not repetitive behaviors in Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) often demonstrate impaired generativity that is thought to mediate repetitive behaviors in autism (Turner in J Child Psychol Psychiatry, 40(6):839-849, 1999a). The present study evaluated generativity in children with and without ASD via the use-of-objects task (Turner in J Child Psychol Psychiatry, 40(2):189-201, 1999b) and an Animals Fluency Task (Lezak in Neuropsychological assessment. Oxford University Press, Oxford, 1995). Groups differed significantly on two of four metrics from the Animals Fluency Task and two of seven metrics from the Us
