Improving the adaptation of resin composites during placement is necessary to increase durability and reduce microleakage. Flowable resin liners have been introduced to improve adaptation in composite restorations. In addition, a device that lowers the viscosity of regular dental composites has been introduced (Calset, AdDent Inc, Danbury, CT, USA). This device lowers the viscosity of composites by preheating them to 54.4 degrees C, which should lead to improved adaptation. This study compared microleakage in Class II composite restorations prepared using: 1) preheated resin composite, 2) unhe

The purpose of this randomized, clinical study was to evaluate the clinical performance of composite resin materials used for fillings and indirect inlays. Twenty-eight sets of five class II restorations (two fillings, three inlays) were placed in 88 premolars and 52 molars in 28 adults. Brilliant Dentin and Estilux Posterior were used for both fillings and inlays, and SR-Isosit for inlays only. After 11 years, 27 sets of restorations (96%) were evaluated clinically using modified United States Public Health Service criteria. Replaced or repaired restorations were observed in 16% of the fillin

BACKGROUND: Internal resorption is a pathological process initiated within the pulp space with the loss of dentin. It often is described as an oval shaped enlargement of the root canal space and usually is asymptomatic and detectable by routine radiographs. Treatment of internal resorption has included several materials--gutta-percha, zinc oxide eugenol and amalgam alloy. These materials do not provide strength to the tooth structure.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 29-year-old woman was referred to a dental clinic for treatment of a large internal resorptive defect in the coronal and middle one-third of

BACKGROUND: In patch testing, co-reactivity between Myroxylon pereirae resin, colophonium and propolis is well recognised. One of the possible explanations is that these materials have common allergenic ingredients.
OBJECTIVES: To identify the main ingredients in M. pereirae resin and colophonium samples used in the preparation of commercial patch test allergens and to compare their compositions with each other as well as with propolis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Analyses were performed on M. pereirae resin and colophonium samples using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry/flame ionisation detec

OBJECTIVE: Water sorption, high volumetric shrinkage, polymerization stress, and potential estrogenic effects triggered by leached compounds are some of the major concerns related to BisGMA-TEGDMA co-monomer systems used in dental composites. These deficiencies call for the development of alternative organic matrices in order to maximize the clinical lifespan of resin composite dental restorations. This study proposes BisGMA-free systems based on the combination of UDMA and a newly synthesized diurethane dimethacrylate, and evaluates key mechanical and physical properties of the resulting mate

A novel composite resin of chitosan supported by activated carbon was prepared using the emulsification cross-linking technique. The adsorption properties of the resin for NO2(-)-N were studied. It is found that there are many developed micropores on the surface of the resin. Due to the addition of activated carbon, the bulk density, skeleton density and void ratio of composite resin are lower than those of the chitosan resin. The adsorption capacity of chitosan composite resin is much greater than the simple compounding made up of activated carbon and chitosan resin. When the temperature is lo

Amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) is an inherited enamel dysplasia involving both dentitions with no other systemic effects. The hereditary pattern is autosomal or X-related dominant or recessive. Its prevalence is approximately 1:14,000-1:16,000. It can be classified as hypocalcified, hypoplastic and hypomaturated according to clinical, radiological, histological and hereditary findings. This study presents a case of hypomaturated type AI in a 16-year-old young man that was successfully treated with different types of resin composites. The patient was regularly recalled during the one-year postope

The purpose of this study was to evaluate histopathologically the effect on pulp tissue of microleakage in resin composite restorations. Seventy-two class V cavities were prepared on buccal surfaces of monkeys and divided into 3 groups, F, O, and S. Every cavity was etched with 37% phosphoric acid. In group F cavities, each cavity was restored with photo-curable composite without any dentin adhesives. In group O, the cavities were left unfilled. In group S, each cavity was treated with a dentin adhesive system and restored with a restorative composite. After 3, 30, or 90 days, animals were sac

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of fiber orientation, silane treatment, and thermal cycling on the retention force of fiber-reinforced composite resin (FRC) posts on resin composite. Two types of FRC posts (linear and woven) were prepared with and without silane treatment. Pull-out test specimens were made of FRC posts and resin composite for core buildup. Specimens were either incubated in distilled water for 24 h or subjected to 10,000 thermal cycles. The maximum fracture load obtained by a pull-out test was defined as the retention force. Fracture modes were observe

This study evaluated the effect of a fiber-premixed indirect resin composite (FMC) substructure on the fracture resistance of mesialocclusal-distal (MOD) indirect composite restorations adhered to extracted human upper premolars. The teeth received a standardized MOD cavity preparation, and indirect composite inlays were fabricated with or without using the FMC. Inlays were cemented into the cavity preparations using either Super-Bond C&B or Panavia F2.0. A total of 28 specimens, namely seven specimens for four groups, were thus fabricated. Failure load and failure energy were determined after
