OBJECTIVES: Acanthamoeba spp. can infect the cornea due poor lens hygiene allows colonization, and current cleaning solutions are ineffective due to resistant cyst formation. This study aimed to establish, for the first time, a standardized protocol for Acanthamoeba trophozoite adhesion to silicone hydrogel soft contact lenses and to quantify the impact of lens–drug interactions on antiparasitic efficacy. Additionally, the study evaluated the efficacy of 1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (C16MImCl) against Acanthamoeba trophozoites in the presence of soft contact lenses, in comparison w

Kinetic (variable) visual disturbances in contact lens wearers may be generated optically or mechanically. These disturbances are categorized in two groups: 1) those affecting both phakic and aphakic contact lens wearers; and 2) those peculiar to aphakic patients. Within each category disturbances vary with the types of lens used. In this review, the optical and mechanical bases for the various problems are discussed, as are possible solutions. It is emphasized that the ophthalmologist prescribing contact lenses should be aware of the patient's work hazards and requirements, and weigh the adva

OBJECTIVE: To assess the incidence of adverse events during the use of a povidone-iodine disinfecting solution (cleadew) and the microbial contamination in contact lens cases.
METHODS: A prospective, single-center, open-label, controlled study evaluating the use of cleadew cleaning and disinfecting system in existing daily wear soft contact lens wearers over a 3-month period was conducted. Ocular signs and symptoms during lens wear were assessed at baseline and after 1 and 3 months of using cleadew. Contact lens cases were assessed for the frequency of microbial contamination and the types of

Currently, conjunctivitis is treated using ofloxacin eye drop solution, which shows low bioavailability and patient non-compliance. Ofloxacin loaded contact lens can be used to overcome the issues related to eye drop solutions (i.e. low bioavailability and frequent instillation). However, the conventional soaking method shows poor ofloxacin uptake and significantly affect the swelling and optical properties of the contact lenses. The current research investigates the effect of microemulsion on the ofloxacin uptake and its effect on the physical properties of the contact lens along with ofloxac

PURPOSE: Bacterial contamination of previously worn soft contact lenses, especially at sites of lens deposits, might play a role in the pathogenesis of lens-associated bacterial keratitis. We studied the effects of three commercial contact lens cleaners and disinfectants in a rabbit model to determine whether cleaning and disinfection reduced infectivity.
METHODS: Duragel 75 soft contact lenses, designed to fit the eyes of rabbits, were worn by rabbits under tarsorrhaphies, then were removed and cleaned in one of three cleaner and disinfectant solutions according to the manufacturers' instruc

Complications of prolonged wearing of soft contact lenses are corneal infection, peripheral vascularization, giant papillary conjunctivitis and allergy, sterile ulcers, corneal warping, lens infection, protein and calcium deposits, lens fragility, and problems with disinfecting solutions. Further long-term studies are needed to compare the safety of prolonged wear soft contact lenses with the safety of intraocular lenses, on which long-term studies are currently being done.

PURPOSE: A recent increase in Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) cases has been associated with Complete MoisturePlus, although many cases used other solutions. Complete MoisturePlus contains taurine and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, unlike other multipurpose solutions (MPSs). The purpose of this study is to (1) determine contact lens solution efficacy against recent clinical and tap water Acanthamoeba isolates and (2) determine whether taurine inclusion increases Acanthamoeba survival against contact lens solutions.
METHODS: Acanthamoeba T4 trophozoites from recent AK clinical and tap water isolat

Bacterial keratitis is reported more frequently in the literature with the use of extended-wear contact lenses. This report describes a case of bilateral simultaneous pseudomonas keratitis in an elderly patient wearing extended-wear contact lenses for correction of myopia. The lenses were not properly disinfected prior to the development of the corneal ulcers. When bacterial keratitis is suspected with the use of extended-wear contact lenses, prompt diagnosis and treatment are necessary. Appropriate microbiologic testing of the contact lenses, lens cases, and lens solutions should also be unde

BACKGROUND: Ophthalmic products are a common but often overlooked contributor to allergic contact dermatitis. Frequency of allergenic ingredients in over-the-counter ophthalmic products has not been well characterized.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of allergenic ingredients in most commonly bought eye lubricants and contact lens solutions.
METHODS: A product list of Amazon.com's best-selling ophthalmic products was curated by searching for "Best Sellers in Eye Drops, Lubricants & Washes" and "Best Sellers in Contact Lens Care Products." For exploratory

PURPOSE: During contact lens wear, components in the tear film adsorb to the contact lens surface to form a protein-rich coating. In this study, we investigated the importance of these components in bacterial adhesion to contact lenses.
METHODS: Five strains of bacteria were tested for their ability to adhere to contact lenses (patient-worn; coated with lactoferrin, lysozyme, or an artificial tear formulation; or left uncoated) in the presence of various solutes (protein, carbohydrate). Bacterial adhesion was quantified by both a total count (light microscopy) and viable count (culturing on a

PURPOSE: To document contact lens prescribing trends in the United Kingdom over the past quarter of a century.
METHODS: An annual survey of contact lens prescribing was conducted each year from 1996 to 2020, inclusive, by asking a random selection of optometrists and contact lens opticians to provide information relating to 10 consecutive contact lens fits between January and March.
RESULTS: Over the 25 year survey period, 2,671 practitioners returned survey forms, reporting a total of 25,575 contact lens fits. The mean (± standard deviation) age of lens wearers was 35 ± 15 years, of which 6

Disposable soft contact lenses (DSCLs) have been marketed as a safer alternative to conventional soft lenses. Extended-wear DSCLs are designed for one or two weeks of continuous use before disposal. Those for daily wear are designed for use as conventional daily wear soft lenses, with daily removal and storage for 2 to 4 weeks before disposal. Beside minor complications, such as corneal abrasion, giant papillary conjunctivitis and toxic epithelial reactions to contact lens solutions, the most serious complication occurring in contact lens users is ulcerative keratitis. Several case-control stu

We report a bacterial corneal ulcer that occurred in a patient who had worn extended-wear rigid gas-permeable contact lenses on a 1-week cycle for 9 months. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was cultured not only from the corneal ulcer but also from the contact lens solutions, suggesting that the patient had been noncompliant with care procedures. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a bacterial corneal ulcer associated with use of a rigid gas-permeable contact lens on an extended-wear basis.

Contact lens-related complications are common, affecting around one third of wearers, although most are mild and easily managed. Contact lenses have well-defined anatomical and physiological effects on the ocular surface and can result in other consequences due to the presence of a biologically active material. A contact lens interacts with the tear film, ocular surface, skin, endogenous and environmental microorganisms, components of care solutions and other antigens which may result in disease specific to contact lens wear, such as metabolic or hypersensitivity disorders. Contact lens wear m

20 patients complaining of contact lens intolerance were patch tested to a contact lens solution and a contact lens components battery. Contact urticaria testing was also carried out. 8 patients had positive delayed reactions on patch testing, 6 patients had positive contact urticaria reactions, and 9 patients had no reactions. These results are discussed and possible alternative diagnoses for the 9 undiagnosed patients are proposed.

Seven Pseudomonas corneal ulcers in six patients were associated with soft contact-lens wear and use of saline solutions prepared from distilled water and sodium chloride tablets. The same species of Pseudomonas isolated from the corneal ulcers were also isolated from the home-prepared saline and in one instance from the water used to prepare the saline solution. In three of the six patients, the pseudomonad isolated from the corneal ulcer was of the same serotype and biochemically identical to the pseudomonad from the patients' saline solution. Commercially available distilled water, even bra
