The edible land snail Cornu aspersum, native to the Mediterranean coastlines of North Africa, is widely distributed on most continents and often invasive in areas where introduction is recent. This species could contribute to the geographic spread of parasites as demonstrated for Brachylaima spp. These cosmopolitan trematodes may represent a threat to human health, like in Australia where Brachylaima cribbi infects humans. In this study, we demonstrate for the first time the occurrence of Brachylaima spp. in two French populations of C. aspersum, Thorigné-Fouillard (Ille-et-Vilaine), and Arçai

OBJECTIVES: Alzheimer's disease (AD) results from different risk variables, such as metabolic syndrome (MetS) and environmental factors. The benefits of Cornus mas L. on diabetes are well-known. However, the impacts of C. mas fruits on AD or MetS-related cognitive dysfunction have not yet been studied. We evaluated the impact of C. mas fruit (80% ethanol) extract in an animal model of MetS and AD.
METHODS: Male Spraque-Dawley rats were administered a high-fat, high-sugar diet for 105 days alone or with an AlCl3 intraperitoneal injection for the last 60 days. C. mas fruit extract (400, 700, an

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease initiated by genetic predisposition and environmental influences culminating in the immunologically mediated destruction of pancreatic β-cells with eventual loss of insulin production. Although T1D can be accurately predicted via autoantibodies, therapies are lacking that can intercede autoimmunity and protect pancreatic β-cells. There are no approved interventional modalities established for this purpose. One such potential source for clinical agents of this use is from the frequently utilized Cornus officinalis (CO) in the field of ethnopharmaco

Several biologically active compounds involved in the green synthesis of silver and gold nanoparticles have been isolated from snail mucus and characterized. This paper presents a successful method for the application of snail mucus from Cornu aspersum as a bioreducing agent of copper sulfate and as a biostabilizer of the copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs-Muc) obtained. The synthesis at room temperature and neutral pH yielded nanoparticles with a spherical shape and an average diameter of 150 nm. The structure and properties of CuONPs-Muc were characterized using various methods and technique

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenera-tive disorder after Alzheimer disease accompanied by the death of dopaminergic neurons and brain nigrostriatal mitochondrial damage in the elderly population. The features of the disease include tremor, rigidity, postural instability, and motor retardation. The pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease is complex, and abnormal lipid metabolism resulting in ferroptosis due to the excessive accumulation of free radicals from oxidative stress in the substantia nigra of the brain was thought to be one of the factors causing the disease. Cornus species are widely distributed in central and southern Europe, east Africa, southwest Asia, and America. Several species are known for edible fruits, especially Cornus mas and Cornus officinalis. These delicious fruits, characterized by their remarkable nutritional and biological values, are widely used in traditional medicine. In contrast to the other edible Cornus species, C. mas and C. officinalis are the most studied for which little information is available on the main phytochemicals and their biological activities. Fruits are characterised by several classes of secondary metabolit

Allelopathic interactions between associated tree species can shape seedling establishment, resource acquisition and long-term coexistence. However, the mechanisms underlying such interactions in endangered plants remain underexplored. In this study, we aimed to elucidate whether and how aqueous litter extracts from Cornus controversa Hemsl. influence the growth performance and nutrient acquisition in Davidia involucrata Baill., a relict and endangered tree species in China. Seedlings were treated with distilled water (control), branch litter extract, leaf litter extract or a mixture of both a

This study investigated the effects and mechanisms of Cornus officinalis Siebold & Zucc. ethanol extract (COEE) on primary dysmenorrhea (PD). COEE administration dose-dependently reduced writhing times, prolonged writhing latency, decreased uterine prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) levels and pro-inflammatory mediators, and improved histopathological signs of uterine inflammation. Furthermore, COEE suppressed the activation of the TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB/NLRP3 signaling axis. In ex vivo experiments, COEE inhibited spontaneous and agonist-induced uterine contractions, attenuated CaCl2-induced contractile reco

New biomaterials based on nanoparticles (NPs) carrying polyphenols-rich extracts (Cornus mas) recently showed promising anti-inflammatory activity in psoriasis. We aimed to understand how topically delivered silver and gold nanoparticles complexed with Cornus mas (Ag-NPs-CM, Au-NPs-CM) modulate inflammation in psoriasis at cellular and molecular level. The impact on psoriatic inflammation was assessed in vitro on pro-inflammatory macrophages, by clinical score, high-frequency ultrasonography and immunohistology of psoriasis plaques treated with Ag-NPs-CM, Au-NPs-CM or control. Many biologically active compounds have been identified in the mucus of the garden snail Cornu aspersum, which are effective in the treatment of several diseases such as cancer, ulcers, wounds, etc. The incorporation of these compounds into the green synthesis of copper nanoparticles (CuONPs-Muc) was demonstrated in our previous study. Based on the synergistic effect of two reducing agents-C. aspersum snail mucus and ascorbic acid (AsA)-on CuSO4.5H2O, which also act as stabilizers of the resulting compound, a new method for the "green" synthesis of CuONPs-Muc is presented. Using two reducing a

In the past three decades, a significant progress has been made in the prevention and treatment of gastric ulcers. The incidence of the disease has decreased, but gastric ulcer is still a medical problem. Currently, the available drugs for gastric ulcer treatment have many side effects; therefore, searching for new and safe therapeutic agents is mandatory. The present study aims to investigate the gastroprotective potential of Cornu aspersum (C. aspersum) mucin against gastric ulcers, and the mechanisms related to oxidative stress and inflammation. C. aspersum mucin was collected from 50 snail
