INTRODUCTION: This study investigates the hypothesis that anatomical localization on the cranium dictates the internal composition of pediatric inclusion cysts, statistically mapping how specific scalp positions predispose lesions to distinct contents such as fluid or hair.
METHODS: A retrospective study of 180 pediatric patients who underwent surgical treatment for cranial inclusion cysts was performed. Demographic data, lesion localization, imaging findings, intraoperative characteristics, and histopathological results were analyzed.
RESULTS: Median age at surgery was 13 months (range 2-21

The calvaria (top part of the skull) is made of pieces of bone as well as multiple soft tissue joints called sutures. The latter is crucial to the growth and morphogenesis of the skull, and thus a loss of calvarial sutures can lead to severe congenital defects in humans. During embryogenesis, the calvaria develops from the cranial mesenchyme covering the brain, which contains cells originating from the neural crest and the mesoderm. While the mechanism that patterns the cranial mesenchyme into bone and sutures is not well understood, function of Lmx1b, a gene encoding a LIM-domain homeodomain

Pycnodysostosis is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by osteosclerosis, small stature, acro-osteolysis of the distal phalanges, loss of the mandibular angle, separated cranial sutures with open fontanels, and frequent fractures. One identified cause of the disease is reduced activity of the cysteine protease cathepsin K. A 48-year-old woman with a history of frequent fractures presented with a severe gait disturbance. Radiography, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and gene analysis were performed. Physical examination revealed open fontanels, and radiographs showed i

OBJECTIVE: Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) is a dominantly inherited skeletal dysplasia caused by mutations in the osteoblast-specific transcription factor-encoding gene, core binding factor α1 (CBFA1). Over 90 mutations in CBFA1 gene have been published to date in 500 independent cases of CCD, including missense mutations, deletions, insertions, frameshift, and splice mutations. However, mutational screening of the CBFA1 gene is still far from saturation, and more novel mutations will be identified to enrich the insights into the molecular basis for the pathogenesis of CCD. The aim of this stud

CBFB at 16q22 heterodimerizes with either RUNX2 (also known as CBFA1) or RUNX1 (CBFA2) to activate the transcription of downstream molecules. RUNX2 regulates osteoblast differentiation and chondrocyte maturation and its haploinsufficiency leads to cleidocranial dysplasia, characterized large fontanelles, hypoplasia or aplasia of the clavicles, hypoplasia of the distal phalanges, and a wide pubic symphysis. Complete loss of Runx1 or Cbfb in mice is lethal because of the absence of fetal liver hematopoiesis. Fetal rescue in Cbfb(-/-) mice by providing the Cbfb functions in the hematopoietic prog

A 1 yr old female Chihuahua was presented for traumatic skull injury. Computed tomography revealed brain herniation through the bregmatic fontanelle. The hernia was manually reduced, and the defect was repaired using a polypropylene mesh. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first reported case of brain herniation through the bregmatic fontanelle in a dog.

The Swiss Animal Welfare Ordinance prohibits the breeding of dogs with persistent fontanelles. Especially in toy-sized dogs, closed fontanelles are important for breeding selection. In such dogs, other alterations at the cranio-cervical junction, hydrocephalus and syringomyelia are frequently observed in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Whether such changes are associated with persistent fontanelles is unclear. The aim of the study was to investigate whether persistent fontanelles are associated with other abnormalities of the head and spinal cord. For this cross-sectional study, 41 toy-sized

BACKGROUND: Anterior fontanelles (AFs) of healthy newborn infants vary widely in size, this being a function of race, geographical location, gender, birth weight, mode of delivery and gestation. Abnormal variations in AF size portend a serious pathology of the cranium or intracranial structures. The established reference value for normal AF size is, therefore, an essential diagnostic tool. This study was conducted to determine the mean AF size and factors that are associated with its variability among apparently healthy term neonates in Lokoja, North Central Nigeria.
METHODS: AF size was meas

Pycnodysostosis is a rare sclerosing bone disorder characterized by short stature, brachycephaly, short/stubby fingers, open cranial sutures/fontanelle, and diffuse osteosclerosis, where multiple fractures of long bones and osteomyelitis of the jaw are common complications. We present a rare case of pycnodysostosis with chronic suppurative osteomyelitis of the mandible in a 36-year-old woman; which was nonsurgically managed by a conservative approach involving a novel protocol referred to as intra-lesional antibiotic therapy.

Pycnodysostosis (PYCD) is a rare autosomal-recessive skeletal disorder that typically presents with osteosclerosis of the majority of the postcranial skeleton and osteolysis of the calvarium, manifesting as persistent open cranial fontanelles and widely spaced cranial sutures. Craniosynsostosis in PYCD is a somewhat paradoxical feature, and has only been rarely reported. The authors present a unique case of a 6-year-old girl with PYCD, multisuture craniosynostosis involving the coronal and sagittal sutures, severe obstructive sleep apnoea, and raised intracranial pressure presenting as papille

We describe five infants with the appearance of external hydrocephalus diagnosed by real-time cranial ultrasound. The indication for scanning in all cases was a head circumference crossing the 90th centile. The interhemispheric fissure is widened with the falx usually visible and the cortical surface can be seen beneath the anterior fontanelle. There is minimal, if any, ventricular dilatation and none of the children went on to develop internal hydrocephalus. Two children had minor motor problems but there were no other neurodevelopmental sequelae.

INTRODUCTION: Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) is a rare genetic skeletal disorder with a low incidence rate. This study reports the first documented case in Inner Mongolia, involving a premature male newborn with a history of birth asphyxia and cerebral infarction. The patient exhibited characteristic clinical features, including abnormal cranial suture palpation, hypertelorism, depressed nasal bridge, and shortened limbs, leading to genetic testing that identified a heterozygous mutation in the RUNX2 gene-the known cause of CCD.
METHODS: Clinical examination included detailed physical assessme

OBJECTIVE It has been suggested that the treatment of infant hydrocephalus results in different craniometric changes depending upon whether ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) placement or endoscopic third ventriculostomy with choroid plexus cauterization (ETV/CPC) is performed. Without an objective and quantitative description of expected changes to the infant cranium and ventricles following ETV/CPC, asserting successful treatment of hydrocephalus is difficult. By comparing infants successfully treated via ETV/CPC or VPS surgery, the authors of this study aimed to define the expected postoperat

The author wished to detail the life and contributions of Dr. Adelola Adeloye, MBBS, MS, FWCS, FRCS, FACS, FRCP, in hope to pay homage to this giant in Global Neurosurgery. Dr. Adelola Adeloye was born on July 18, 1935 in Illesa, Osun State, present-day South-West Nigeria. The Adeloye-Odeku disease is an eponym for a congenital dermoid or epidermoid inclusion cyst (CDIC/CEDIC) over the anterior fontanelle and below the galea aponeurotica. In 1971, Adeloye and Odeku first described these cysts in 18 Nigerian patients. While overall rare and predominantly noted in children, the Adeloye-Odeku dis

INTRODUCTION: Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) is a rare disease characterized by craniofacial, skeletal, and oral anomalies. The disease prevalence is estimated to be 1 per million inhabitants; thus, only a few studies have described large cohorts of CCD patients. This study reviewed the clinical-radiological and demographic characteristics of patients with CCD in South America.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of all cases of CCD reported in South America following the PRISMA guidelines. Demographic information (sex, age at diagnosis, origin, reason for consultation, and family histor

This case report presents a novel treatment approach for refractory purulent meningitis in a 1-month-old infant caused by penicillin-sensitive group B Streptococcus. Despite initial treatment with intravenous antibiotics, including penicillin and vancomycin, the infant experienced persistent symptoms and bilateral subdural effusions. Conventional therapies failed to resolve these issues, leading to the use of a new technique: subarachnoid puncture via the anterior fontanelle combined with intrathecal vancomycin administration. This minimally invasive procedure allowed for targeted antibiotic d

OBJECTIVES: To describe the methodology for correct visualization of the anterior fontanelle using three-dimensional ultrasound, to report its normal development during gestation, and to compare this with abnormal development.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional prospective evaluation of development of the anterior fontanelle in a series of 78 normal fetuses and 47 fetuses with congenital anomalies between 12 and 38 weeks of gestation. The anterior fontanelle was visualized in a mid-sagittal view of the fetal head, preferably with a pocket of fluid between the fetal head and the uterine wall,
