Cross-cultural Comparison of Perceptions and Knowledge About Electroconvulsive Therapy Among Adults Who Screened Positive for Depression in the United States, India, and China.

OBJECTIVE: Despite the established efficacy of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), negative perceptions and inaccurate knowledge about ECT in the United States and other countries persist. This study examined ECT perceptions and knowledge in the 3 most populous countries in the world. METHODS: We recruited participants who screened positive for depression on the Patient Health Questionnaire 9 (PHQ-9) in the United States (n = 1643), India (n = 1469), and China (n = 328) and compared responses on the ECT-Perception and Knowledge Scale. RESULTS: Although the US sample had significantly higher PHQ

Cross-Cultural Comparison of Perceived Stigma in Major Depressive Disorder: The Role of Spiritual Well-Being, Resilience, and Quality of Life in Austria and Japan.

BACKGROUND: Perceived stigma in Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a well-established barrier to help-seeking, social functioning, and quality of life. However, little is known about how stigma is shaped by cultural context and which psychosocial resources may buffer its effects. AIMS: This study aimed to examine the relationship between perceived stigma and key protective factors - spirituality, resilience, quality of life, and social functioning - in patients with MDD from Austria and Japan. METHOD: A total of 101 patients diagnosed with MDD (51 from Austria, 50 from Japan) completed valid

[New nutritional screening tool for hospitalized patients with chronic kidney disease: translation, cross-cultural adaptation of Renal iNUT into Spanish and comparison with classic questionnaires].

Introduction: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is characterized by its high prevalence of malnutrition, difficult to detect as it is underestimated by the usual tools. There is no valid or hospital-level nutritional screening tool in Spanish to identify patients with CKD at risk of malnutrition. Objective: to translate and accomplish the transcultural adaptation of Jackson's questionnaire (Renal Inpatient Nutrition Screening Tool [Renal iNUT]) to Spanish, which detects the risk of malnutrition in CKD inpatients and compares it with other nutritional tools. Methods: phase 1: translation, back-trans

Cross-cultural network structures of social anxiety, body dysmorphic, and major depressive disorder symptoms in individualistic vs. collectivistic societies: A comparison between American, German, and Japanese populations.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD), body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), and major depressive disorder (MDD) are highly comorbid, which may be influenced by cultural variables associated with individualism vs. collectivism with particular emphasis on shame. This study investigated the network structures comprising symptoms of SAD, BDD, MDD, and shame across three countries typically associated with either a high tendency of collectivism (Japan), a high tendency of individualism (USA), or in between (Germany). Participants included 319 Japanese, 440 US Americans, and 308 Germans from the general populati

A cross-cultural comparison of the roles of emotional intelligence, metacognition, and negative coping for health-related quality of life in German versus Pakistani patients with chronic heart failure.

OBJECTIVES: Low emotional intelligence (EI) may predispose individuals to applying maladaptive coping strategies. This may maintain anxious worrying, which is highly prevalent in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF) and may affect mental (MCS) and physical component summaries (PCS) of health-related quality of life (HRQoL). DESIGN: The current study is a cross-sectional and cross-cultural survey. METHODS: N = 200 outpatients with CHF were recruited at cardiology institutes in Germany and Pakistan and assessed with self-report questionnaires. RESULTS: Path analysis (χ2 (4) = 7.59, p = .

Retrospective report of social withdrawal during adolescence and current maladjustment in young adulthood: cross-cultural comparisons between Australian and South Korean students.

The current study investigated associations between the frequency of and motivations for social withdrawal during adolescence and emotional distress in young adulthood. Perceived motivations for social withdrawal included unsociability, isolation, shyness, and low mood. Social withdrawal during adolescence was assessed using a retrospective questionnaire completed by Australian and Korean university students. They also completed measures of general self-worth, social relationships, loneliness, social anxiety, and depression at university. Partial correlations and path analyses revealed that di

Comparison of GeneXpert cycle threshold values with smear microscopy and culture as a measure of mycobacterial burden in five regional referral hospitals of Uganda- A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Determining mycobacterial burden is important in assessing severity of disease, evaluating infectiousness and predicting patient treatment outcomes. Mycobacterial burden assessed by smear microscopy grade and time to culture positivity is clearly interpretable by most physicians. GeneXpert (Xpert) has been recommended by WHO as a first line tuberculosis (TB) diagnostic test as an alternative to smear microscopy. Xpert gives cycle threshold (Ct) values as a potential measure for mycobacterial burden. For physicians to clearly interpret Ct values as measures of mycobacterial burden,

Evaluation and comparison of immunogenicity and cross-protective efficacy of two inactivated cell culture-derived GIIa- and GIIb-genotype porcine epidemic diarrhea virus vaccines in suckling piglets.

Although highly virulent GII-genotype PEDV strains have become pandemic in the swine population worldwide, little is known about the differences in immunogenicity and cross-protective efficacy between the GIIa and GIIb subgenotypes. Hence, in the present study, we vaccinated suckling piglets with GIIa (CH/HBXT/2018) and GIIb (CH/HNPJ/2017) PEDV strain-based inactivated vaccine candidates and compared their immunogenicity and cross-protective efficacy. The results showed that both vaccine candidates induced high levels of PEDV-specific IgG antibodies and IFN-γ and reduced the levels of neutrali

T cell proliferation by direct cross-talk between OX40 ligand on human mast cells and OX40 on human T cells: comparison of gene expression profiles between human tonsillar and lung-cultured mast cells.

Mast cells (MCs) are the primary effector cells in allergic reactions and have also been found to activate T cells and to reside in close physical proximity to T cells. However, the molecular mechanisms involved in the MC-T cell interaction remain unclear. We hypothesized that human tonsillar MCs, which locate in the interfollicular areas, might interact with T cells. Thus, we first established a culture system of human tonsillar MCs and then compared gene expression profiles of tonsillar MCs with that of lung MCs before and after aggregation of FcepsilonRI by using high-density oligonucleotid

Carneiro's global dataset of cultural traits in ethnographic and historical societies: a digital edition.

The late Robert L. Carneiro was a prominent anthropologist who devoted his life to the study of political evolution and the evolution of complex societies. In the 1960s and 1970s, he and his colleagues created a cross-cultural dataset for their Scale Analysis project, collecting ethnographic and historical data on hundreds of cultural traits in more than a hundred societies worldwide. Although Carneiro presented the results of the project in several papers, the dataset itself has not yet been published. Here we present a digital version of two editions of the dataset, based on Carneiro's docum

Rethinking dependent personality disorder: comparing different human relatedness in cultural contexts.

We argue that the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders dependent personality disorder is a culturally related concept reflecting deeply rooted values, beliefs, and assumptions of American individualistic convictions about self and interpersonal relationship. This article integrates social psychology concepts into the exploration of psychopathology. Beginning with the construct of individualism and collectivism, we demonstrate the limitations of this commonly used framework. The indigenous Chinese concept of Confucianism and Chinese Relationalism is introduced to highlight that

Cross-cultural representations of conjoined twins.

Conjoined twinning is a rare birth defect estimated to occur in about 1 in 50,000 to 100,000 births. The mechanism of conjoined twinning is not proven. Different forms of conjoined twinning are observed with the thoracopagus form being the most common. The rate of conjoined twinning is similar across all major populations. A dramatic malformation of this type would be an extraordinary occurrence leading people to reflect on the spiritual or supernatural nature of such an event. Therefore, it is not surprising that artifacts that seem to depict different forms of conjoined twins are seen across

Happiness Maximization Is a WEIRD Way of Living.

Psychological science tends to treat subjective well-being and happiness synonymously. We start from the assumption that subjective well-being is more than being happy to ask the fundamental question: What is the ideal level of happiness? From a cross-cultural perspective, we propose that the idealization of attaining maximum levels of happiness may be especially characteristic of Western, educated, industrial, rich, and democratic (WEIRD) societies but less so for others. Searching for an explanation for why "happiness maximization" might have emerged in these societies, we turn to studies li

Extensive locomotor versatility across a global sample of hunter-gatherer societies.

Studies of hunter-gatherer locomotion inform a wide range of academic fields, from human behavioural ecology and hominin evolution to sports science and evolutionary health. Despite celebrated ethnographic examples of hunter-gatherer locomotor proficiency in running, climbing, swimming and diving, there has been limited systematic analysis of cross-cultural variation in hunter-gatherer locomotor versatility. We conducted a systematic cross-cultural analysis of hunter-gatherer locomotion, coding locomotor behaviour from over 900 ethnographic documents. Our results indicated that high levels of
