Electroencephalography Changes During Cybersickness: Focusing on Delta and Alpha Waves.

Virtual reality (VR) is an immersive technology capable of simulating alternate realities, however, it often leads to cybersickness, causing discomfort for users. We conducted an experiment using a group of 30 participants (aged 25 ± 2.1 years) to see the alpha and delta wave changes for three conditions: Blank, Video, and Video Pause, with electroencephalography (EEG) recordings. The experiments were repeated three times (Trial 1, Trial 2, and Trial 3). The results showed a significant increase in delta wave power for Video compared with the Blank (p < 0.05). Video Pause showed a significant

EEG activation in preschool children: Characteristics and predictive value for current and future mental health status.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has characterised EEG changes associated with resting activation in primary school children and adults, while task-related activation has only been considered in adults. The current study characterises physiological activation in preschool children and examines the potential value of activation indices for predicting mental health status at two time points. AIMS: To investigate how resting activation and task-related activation are represented in 4- to 5-year-old preschool children and examine if these activation indices can predict current and future mental heal

The clinical usefulness of ictal surface EEG in neocortical epilepsy.

PURPOSE: Localizable scalp EEGs, during ictal episodes, appear to be rare in neocortical epileptic syndromes. However, studies based on large numbers of patients are also rare. This study aims to identify the characteristic patterns of variable neocortical epilepsies and to evaluate their clinical usefulness in the localization of epileptogenic focuses. METHODS: We retrospectively assessed 394 noninvasive ictal recordings from 86 patients who subsequently underwent invasive study and resective surgery. Ictal EEGs were recorded using a video-EEG monitoring system with electrodes placed accordi

Quantitative EEG changes under various conditions of hyperventilation in the sensorimotor cortex of the anaesthetized cat.

The effects on the EEG rhythms recorded from the sensorimotor cortex (post-sigmoid gyrus) of anaesthetized cats were studied under 4 conditions of artificial mechanical hyperventilation (HV) before and after cervical bilateral vagotomy. In animals with intact vagus nerves, using visual examination, EEG changes were only observed within the 2nd min during HV produced by increased stroke volume (delta V) with associated hypocapnia. Quantitative EEG (qEEG) showed that, for the same increase in minute ventilation and the same degree of hypocapnia, delta V induced a greater and earlier relative dec

Epilepsy-related brain networks in ring chromosome 20 syndrome: an EEG-fMRI study.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the brain networks that are involved in the different electroencephalography (EEG) abnormalities in patients with ring chromosome 20 [r(20)] syndrome. We hypothesize the existence of both distinctive and common brain circuits for the paroxysmal high voltage sharp waves (hSWs), the seizures, and the slow-wave 3-7 Hz rhythm that characterize this condition. METHODS: Thirteen patients with [r(20)] syndrome were studied by means of EEG simultaneously recorded with functional magnetic resonance imaging (EEG-fMRI). EEG traces were reviewed in order to detect the pathologic in

Differential Effect of Dopamine D4 Receptor Activation on Low-Frequency Oscillations in the Prefrontal Cortex and Hippocampus May Bias the Bidirectional Prefrontal-Hippocampal Coupling.

Dopamine D4 receptor (D4R) mechanisms are implicated in psychiatric diseases characterized by cognitive deficits, including schizophrenia, ADHD, and autism. The cellular mechanisms are poorly understood, but impaired neuronal synchronization in cortical networks was proposed to contribute to these deficits. In animal experiments, D4R activation was shown to generate aberrant increased gamma oscillations and to reduce performance on cognitive tasks requiring functional prefrontal cortex (PFC) and hippocampus (HPC) networks. While fast oscillations in the gamma range are important for local sync

Resting state eyes-closed cortical rhythms in patients with locked-in-syndrome: an EEG study.

OBJECTIVE: Locked-in syndrome (LIS) is a state of complete paralysis, except for ocular movements, which results from ventral brainstem lesions. Patients typically are fully conscious. Here we tested the hypothesis that electroencephalographic (EEG) rhythms are abnormal in LIS patients, possibly due to an impaired neural synchronization between brainstem and cerebral cortex. METHODS: Resting state eyes-closed EEG data were recorded in 13 LIS subjects and 15 cognitively normal control subjects. With reference to the individual alpha frequency (IAF), the bands of interest were delta (IAF-8 to I

Positive Shyness in the Brain: Frontal Electroencephalogram Alpha Asymmetry and Delta-Beta Correlation in Children.

Positive shyness is thought to be an approach-dominant form of shyness, whereas non-positive shyness is thought to be an avoidance-dominant form of shyness. This study examined electrocortical and behavioral correlates of motivation and emotion in relation to these shy subtypes in 67 children (Mage  = 10.41 years, SD = 3.23). Using resting state electroencephalography, findings revealed that positive shy and low shy children had greater relative left frontal alpha asymmetry compared to non-positive shy children, and positive shy children had a higher frontal delta-beta correlation compared to

Avoiding the pitfalls of EEG interpretation in childhood epilepsy.

The accurate interpretation of the electroencephalogram (EEG) of infants and children being evaluated for suspected epilepsy is based on the appreciation of normal and expected age-dependent characteristics, an awareness of the significance of both epileptiform and non-epileptiform activity, and the correlation of epileptiform abnormalities with clinical findings. Avoiding the pitfalls of pediatric EEG interpretation include the recognition of such normal EEG features in wakefulness as posterior slow waves of youth, mu rhythm, and lambda waves. In addition, the understanding of age-dependent c

Resting-State EEG Alpha Rhythms Are Related to CSF Tau Biomarkers in Prodromal Alzheimer's Disease.

Patients with mild cognitive impairment due to Alzheimer's disease (ADMCI) typically show abnormally high delta (<4 Hz) and low alpha (8-12 Hz) rhythms measured from resting-state eyes-closed electroencephalographic (rsEEG) activity. Here, we hypothesized that the abnormalities in rsEEG activity may be greater in ADMCI patients than in those with MCI not due to AD (noADMCI). Furthermore, they may be associated with the diagnostic cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) amyloid-tau biomarkers in ADMCI patients. An international database provided clinical-demographic-rsEEG datasets for cognitively unimpaired

Frontal brain maturation and the stability of children's shyness.

Recent evidence suggests that relative to nonshy children, shy children exhibit a lower overall frontal EEG alpha/delta ratio (ADR) during middle childhood, possibly reflecting relatively less frontal brain maturation at this age. We examined this same ADR measure in relation to the stability of observed shyness and parent-reported child social anxiety measured across two laboratory visits separated by approximately 1 year during late childhood in 51 children (33% female, age range 10-16 years). We found that the overall frontal ADR score was significantly lower among children with high, stabl

High-definition tDCS to the right temporoparietal junction modulates slow-wave resting state power and coherence in healthy adults.

The right temporoparietal junction (rTPJ) is a multisensory integration hub that is increasingly utilized as a target of stimulation studies exploring its rich functional network roles and potential clinical applications. While transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is frequently employed in such studies, there is still relatively little known regarding its local and network neurophysiological effects, particularly at important nonmotor sites such as the rTPJ. The current study applied either anodal, cathodal, or sham high-definition tDCS to the rTPJ of 53 healthy participants and used

Microarchitectural findings in sleep EEG in depression: diagnostic implications.

A 10-year review of sleep electroencephalogram (EEG)-frequency analysis in depression reveals several consistent microarchitectural abnormalities. Decreased delta amplitude or incidence, particularly in the first 100 min of sleep, has been reported. Elevated fast-frequency EEG has been shown in both remitted and symptomatic depressed patients, especially in the right hemisphere. Further, interhemispheric coherence is reduced in both depressed groups. These microarchitectural features may not be present in narcolepsy, obsessive-compulsive disorders, or schizophrenia, despite similarities in sle

Time-frequency theta and delta measures index separable components of feedback processing in a gambling task.

Previous work using gambling tasks indicate that the feedback negativity (FN) reflects primary or salient stimulus attributes (often gain vs. loss), whereas the feedback-P300 appears sensitive to secondary stimulus information. A recent time-frequency approach has characterized separable theta (3-7 Hz) and delta (0-3 Hz) feedback processes, independently sensitive to primary feedback attributes, specifically loss and gain outcomes, respectively. The current study extends this time-frequency work to evaluate both primary and secondary (relative outcome and outcome magnitude) feedback attributes

Quantitative EEG in schizophrenic patients before and during pharmacotherapy.

The aim of the study was to determine the possible differences in quantitative EEG parameters of schizophrenic patients before and during therapy with neuroleptics. First EEG recordings were obtained from schizophrenic patients (n = 50) who had not been taking any medicaments during the preceding 2 months. Second EEG recordings were obtained during the administration of neuroleptic therapy. Amplitude values of particular spectral segment, i.e. delta, theta, alpha 1, alpha 2, beta 1 and beta 2 (after fast Fourier transformation) were analyzed. The F3, F4, C3, C4, T3, T4, P3, P4, O1 and O2 regio

Long-term effects of kwashiorkor on the electroencephalogram.

The long-term effects of kwashiorkor on the electroencephalogram were assessed by means of computer analysis techniques. The experimental group, consisting of 30 black children, 6 to 12 years old, hospitalized for the treatment of kwashiorkor during the first 27 months of life, was age-matched with three control groups. These were a group of siblings and of yardmates, neither of whom had been exposed to acute infantile malnutrition, and a very high socioeconomic group of white children. The results revealed significantly less alpha activity and more slow-wave activity in the electroencephalogr

Distribution of epileptiform discharges during nREM sleep in the CSWSS syndrome: relationship with sigma and delta activities.

PURPOSE: The EEG pattern of epilepsy with continuous spike-waves during slow wave sleep (CSWSS) is characterized by an almost continuous activation of spike-and-slow-wave complexes during nREM sleep with a marked reduction of EEG abnormalities during REM sleep and the awake state. Experimental studies indicate that normal sleep oscillations that during nREM sleep lead to the appearance of spindles and delta waves on scalp EEG might develop into paroxysmal synchronization. Spectral analysis enables the quantitative description of the dynamics of delta (Delta Activity, DA, 0.5-4.5 Hz) and sigma

Effects of alcohol on sleep parameters of sleep-deprived healthy volunteers.

Both partial and total sleep deprivation frequently result in a rebound of paradoxical sleep (PS), as well as of slow-wave or delta sleep. Acute administration of ethanol inhibits PS in normal volunteers. This effect is dose-dependent and consists of increased latency to and reduced duration of paradoxical sleep. It has also been shown that PS rebound may occur on the same night, as blood alcohol concentration (BAC) declines. The present study examined the effects of sleep deprivation prior to ethanol administration on nocturnal-sleep parameters in healthy male volunteers. Polysomnograms were

Electrophysiology of a slow (0.5-4 Hz) intrinsic oscillation of cat thalamocortical neurones in vivo.

1. Electrophysiologically identified thalamocortical neurones have been intra- and extracellularly recorded in acutely prepared cats, under different anaesthetic conditions. 2. A slow (0.5-4 Hz) membrane potential oscillation was observed in thalamocortical cells recorded in motor, sensory, associational and intralaminar thalamic nuclei. The oscillation consisted of rhythmic low-threshold spikes alternating with after-hyperpolarizations. 3. About 80% of the neurones with intact cortical connections were set into the slow oscillatory mode by bringing their membrane potential to between -68 and
