The global rise in antibiotic resistance among oral pathogens necessitates exploring natural and innovative alternatives for dental caries management. This study aimed to synthesize, characterize, and evaluate a novel clove extract-loaded nano-hydroxyapatite composite (nHA-CE) for its dual functionality: biomimetic remineralization and enhanced antimicrobial activity against dental caries-associated microbes. Nano-hydroxyapatite (nHA) was synthesized via wet chemical precipitation and characterized using XRD, FTIR, AFM, and DLS. Clove extract was obtained by ethanolic extraction and analyzed b

INTRODUCTION: Dental caries is the most common chronic childhood disease. Products of metabolism by bacteria populating the tooth surface induce development and progression of cavities.
OBJECTIVES: We sought to determine whether a polyvinylpyrrolidone-iodine (PVP-I; povidone-iodine) and NaF topical varnish was superior to one containing only NaF in prevention of new dental caries lesions in a single-center randomized active-controlled trial based on a double-blind, parallel-group design.
METHODS: The site was Pohnpei State, Federated States of Micronesia. The study population was healthy chi

Bacterial biofilm (dental plaque) plays a key role in caries etiopathogenesis and chronic periodontitis in humans. Dental plaque formation is determined by exopolysaccharides (EPSs) produced by cariogenic and periopathogenic bacteria. The most frequent cariogenic bacteria include oral streptococci (in particular S. mutans) and lactobacilli (most frequently L. acidophilus). In turn, the dominant periopathogen in periodontitis is Porphyromonas gingivalis. Development of dental caries is often accompanied with gingivitis constituting the mildest form of periodontal disease. Basic cellular compone

Dental caries is a multifactorial chronic infectious disease that impacts healthcare costs globally, caused by alterations of the plaque microbiome and proliferation of cariogenic Streptococcus mutans. Treatments targeting S. mutans, such as alternative strategies using probiotics, might be effective in preventing the development of dental caries. In this study, the probiotic formulation of Lactobacillus reuteri SGL01, vitamin C, and acerola was tested against S. mutans DSM20523. Antimicrobial activity was assessed by deferred antagonism and spot-on-lawn assays for L. reuteri SGL01. MIC and MB

Dental diseases have long been taught and treated as separate entities: cariology, operative dentistry, endodontics, and periodontology, each working within its own boundaries. However, increasing biological and clinical evidence suggests that this classified view does not fully reflect how disease progresses in the mouth. Instead, dental disease should be understood as a continuum within the interconnected tooth-pulp-periodontium complex. This review provides current evidence showing how dental caries can serve as the starting point of a process that can progress through pulpitis and apical p

Streptococcus mutans often survives as a biofilm on the tooth surface and contributes to the development of dental caries. We investigated the efficacy of ClyR, an engineered chimeolysin, against S. mutans biofilms under physiological and cariogenic conditions. Susceptibility tests showed that ClyR was active against all clinical S. mutans isolates tested as well as S. mutans biofilms that displayed resistance to penicillin. The S. mutans biofilms that formed on hydroxyapatite discs under physiological sugar conditions and cariogenic conditions were reduced ∼2 logs and 3 logs after treatment w

OBJECTIVES: The paper describes preliminary in vitro investigations, the objectives of which were to examine the influence of certain experimental parameters on artificial carious lesion formation in root hard tissues, and their remineralisation. These experiments formed part of a wider study that aimed to develop an in situ model of root caries, based on the existing coronal caries model used in Liverpool. The present studies examined the effects (a) of the anatomical origin of the dentine, the presence or absence of cementum, the exposure time and the type of demineralising system, on lesion

AIM AND BACKGROUND: A child's temperament, influenced by inborn traits and emotional regulation, can impact their dental behavior and caries risk. Parenting styles, such as authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, or neglectful, also play a significant role. Authoritative parenting tends to yield more favorable dental outcomes, while permissive parenting can lead to a higher prevalence of caries. Studying these interactions can help tailor dental interventions and address potential risks associated with caries development. Thus, the study aims to correlate parental personality, the child's te

Because of its superior strength, esthetic properties, and excellent biocompatibility, zirconia is preferred for dental prosthetic such as crowns and bridges. However, zirconia crowns and bridges are susceptible to secondary caries owing to margin leakage. Silver is a well-known antibacterial agent, making it a desirable additive to zirconia crowns and bridges for secondary caries prevention. This study focuses on imparting zirconia composite with antibacterial properties to enhance its protective capacity in dental restorations. We used the sol-gel method to dope Ag into zirconia. Objectives: Dental caries is a common chronic disease amongst children and are typically evaluated using the DMFT/deft index (decayed, missing, and filled teeth for permanent dentition/decayed, extracted, and filled teeth for primary dentition). To address the limitations associated with these indices, alternative assessment tools such as the Caries Assessment Spectrum and Treatment (CAST) index and Ora test have been developed. These methods aim to estimate caries activity within the oral cavity more accurately. The objective of our study was to evaluate and correlate caries activity in 5-to-
