Diffuse abdominal hydatidosis: role of magnetic resonance imaging.

Hydatid cyst disease still is a serious public-health problem in endemic areas. It is a tissue infestation caused by the larval stage of a parasite, Echinococcus granulosus. Although liver and lung are the most commonly involved organs, hydatid disease can occur in all viscera and soft tissues. In 10% of cases, hydatid disease arises in the viscera: mainly in the spleen (0.9-8%), but also in kidney, bone, heart and peritoneal cavity (0.5-5%). Other rare locations such as muscles have been described in less than 1% of cases of hydatid disease. We report magnetic resonance imaging findings of a

Magnetic resonance imaging in the assessment of pancreatic cancer with quantitative parameter extraction by means of dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging, diffusion kurtosis imaging and intravoxel incoherent motion diffusion-weighted imaging.

BACKGROUND: Despite great technical advances in imaging, such as multidetector computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), diagnosing pancreatic solid lesions correctly remains challenging, due to overlapping imaging features with benign lesions. We wanted to evaluate functional MRI to differentiate pancreatic tumors, peritumoral inflammatory tissue, and normal pancreatic parenchyma by means of dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI (DCE-MRI)-, diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI)-, and intravoxel incoherent motion model (IVIM) diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI)-derived parameters. METHODS: We

Measurement of water diffusion in hormone-treated rat uteri by diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging.

In this study, apparent water diffusion coefficients in hormone-treated rat uteri were measured by diffusion-weighted NMR imaging. Four groups of ovariectomized, mature young rats were treated with estrogen, progesterone, estrogen plus progesterone, or saline (as control). It was found that water diffusion is anisotropic in the myometrium, but not in the endometrium, and that it depends on hormonal conditions in the endometrium, but not in the myometrium. The anisotropy of water diffusion can be exploited to improve image contrast among the various uterine tissue types. The hormonal response s

T2 magnetic resonance imaging combined with diffusion-weighted imaging for colon cancer lymph nodes.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer is a malignancy with a high risk of lymph node metastasis and poor prognosis, and thus requires an accurate diagnosis. AIM: To assess the diagnostic value of combined magnetic resonance T2-weighted imaging (T2WI) and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) in colorectal cancer. METHODS: We included 120 patients with suspected colorectal cancer who underwent magnetic resonance imaging. Surgical pathology was used as the gold standard for comparison. Combined T2WI and DWI showed higher diagnostic efficacy than either of the two methods used individually. RESULTS: The co

Role of diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging as an imaging biomarker of urothelial carcinoma.

Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging is a type of functional imaging that is increasingly being applied in the management of upper tract urothelial carcinoma and bladder cancer. The image contrast is derived from differences in the Brownian motion of water molecules in tissues. The homogenous high signal intensity of upper tract urothelial carcinoma and bladder cancer on diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging provides helpful diagnostic information for the presence of cancerous lesions in a non-invasive manner. Recently, growing evidence has emerged showing that diffusion-weigh

Seizure freedom after surgical resection of diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging abnormalities.

OBJECTIVE: Successful epilepsy surgery requires accurate localization and removal of the epileptogenic zone. Neuroimaging helps detect structural brain abnormalities to guide surgery, but current clinical practice does not use diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (dwMRI). However, previous work has shown that diffusion abnormalities are present in epilepsy and may relate to the epileptogenic zone. Here, we investigate whether surgical resection of diffusion abnormalities relates to postoperative seizure freedom. METHODS: We investigated the association between surgical resection of d

Subtype Diagnosis of Sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease with Diffusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

OBJECTIVE: Sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (sCJD) comprises several subtypes as defined by genetic and prion protein characteristics, which are associated with distinct clinical and pathological phenotypes. To date, no clinical test can reliably diagnose the subtype. We established two procedures for the antemortem diagnosis of sCJD subtype using diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODS: MRI of 1,458 patients referred to the National Prion Disease Pathology Surveillance Center were collected through its consultation service. One neuroradiologist blind to the diagnosis scored 12

Diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging of the optic nerves in pediatric hydrocephalus.

OBJECTIVE: While conventional imaging can readily identify ventricular enlargement in hydrocephalus, structural changes that underlie microscopic tissue injury might be more difficult to capture. MRI-based diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) uses properties of water motion to uncover changes in the tissue microenvironment. The authors hypothesized that DTI can identify alterations in optic nerve microstructure in children with hydrocephalus. METHODS: The authors retrospectively reviewed 21 children (< 18 years old) who underwent DTI before and after neurosurgical intervention for acute obstructive
