Causality between appendiceal disease and cancers of the digestive system: A Mendelian randomization study.

The connection between appendiceal disease and cancers of the digestive tract has attracted widespread attention, but conclusion remain controversial. It is still unclear whether appendiceal disease has a definite causal effect on cancer. Our research aims to explore the causal relationship between appendiceal diseases and digestive system tumors. A two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was conducted using genome-wide association study datasets to explore the causal impact of appendiceal disease on the risk of cancers. Five different MR methods were used to investigate causality. Th

[Buerger's disease disclosed by a perforation in the digestive system. Apropos of a case and review of the literature].

A 27 year-old man who underwent an intestinal segmental resection for small bowel perforation was hospitalized for chronic abdominal pain with weight loss. Coeliac and mesenteric stenosis was diagnosed and laparotomy was performed. Histologic findings were consistent with Buerger's disease. One month later, he developed intermittent claudication of the left leg, and 8 years later amputation of a toe was performed. Since 1956, 25 cases of abdominal Buerger's disease has been reported in the literature. In eight cases, intestinal involvement inaugurated the disease. The clinical presentation can

Gender differences in the relationship between dynapenic abdominal obesity and non-neoplastic digestive system diseases among middle-aged and older adults.

BACKGROUND: Non-neoplastic digestive system diseases (NNDSD) are highly prevalent among middle-aged and older adults and represent a substantial global health burden. Dynapenic abdominal obesity (DAO), a clinical phenotype characterized by low muscle strength (dynapenia) combined with abdominal obesity, has been associated with a range of chronic diseases. However, the prospective association between DAO and incident NNDSD has not yet been elucidated. This study aimed to examine the prospective association between DAO and the risk of new-onset NNDSD. METHODS: A total of 5,956 participants fro

The Role of Transient Receptor Potential Vanilloid 1 in Common Diseases of the Digestive Tract and the Cardiovascular and Respiratory System.

Transient receptor potential vanilloid subtype 1 (TRPV1), a member of the transient receptor potential vanilloid (TRPV) channel family, is a nonselective cation channel that is widely expressed in sensory nerve fibers and nonneuronal cells, including certain vascular endothelial cells and smooth muscle cells. The activation of TRPV1 may be involved in the regulation of various physiological functions, such as the release of inflammatory mediators in the body, gastrointestinal motility function, and temperature regulation. In recent years, a large number of studies have revealed that TRPV1 play

Life style-related diseases of the digestive system: colorectal cancer as a life style-related disease: from carcinogenesis to medical treatment.

Life style-related diseases are associated with an increased risk of colorectal cancer (CRC). Recently, an association has been demonstrated between obesity and CRC. CRC has been associated with markers of insulin or glucose control, and insulin resistance might be the unifying mechanism by which several risk factors affect colorectal carcinogenesis. We evaluated the association between the number of aberrant crypt foci (ACF) and obesity, insulin resistance, hyperlipidemia, and other factors of life style-related disease. As a result, age, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, and viscer

Laboratory manifestations and pathophysiological aspects of coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic: focusing on the digestive system.

Since December 2019, the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 has constituted a serious threat to global health. So far, there is little published evidence on the laboratory features of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). We have reviewed laboratory findings from multiple studies, mostly relating to the digestive system, since the virus outbreak. Laboratory data from older coronaviruses endemics, as well as other RNA viruses, were also reported. Although the main route of transmission is considered to be respiratory droplets, the distribution of ACE2 receptors in the gastrointestin

Digestive system manifestations and clinical significance of coronavirus disease 2019: A systematic literature review.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: A worldwide outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has drawn global attention. Several reports have described the gastrointestinal (GI) manifestations in the infected patients. The systematic review was designed to highlight the gaps in our knowledge about the prevalence and clinical significance of GI symptoms in patients with COVID-19. METHODS: We searched PubMed database and Google articles published in both English and Chinese up to June 3, 2020, using search terms "clinical features," "2019 novel coronavirus," "2019-nCoV," "COVID-19," or "SARS-Cov-2." The Role of Inflammatory Biomarkers in Mediating the Effect of Inflammatory Bowel Disease on nonmalignant Digestive System Diseases: A Multivariable Mendelian Randomized Study.

BACKGROUND: While observation studies have shown a positive correlation between inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and the risk of nonmalignant digestive system diseases, a definitive causal relationship has not yet been clearly established. METHODS: Mendelian randomization (MR) was employed to investigate the potential causal association between genetic susceptibility to IBD and nonmalignant gastrointestinal diseases. Genetic variants were extracted as instrumental variables (IVs) from a genome-wide association study (GWAS) meta-analysis, which included 12,194 cases of Crohn's disease (CD) and

Proteomic modelling of gluten digestion from a physiologically relevant food system: A focus on the digestion of immunogenic peptides from wheat implicated in celiac disease.

Celiac disease is an autoimmune illness activated by gluten peptides produced during gastrointestinal digestion. A simulated in vitro digestion of gluten was conducted to define the profile and kinetic release pattern of immunogenic gluten peptides in a physiologically relevant food matrix. White bread was digested using the INFOGEST in vitro standardised digestion protocol from 0 to 240 min and subsequently analysed by SDS-PAGE, quantitative LC-MS/MS, untargeted LC-MS/MS and ELISA. The release profile of six gluten peptides was defined by quantitative LC-MS/MS; none were detected in the gastr

Enteric nervous system regeneration and functional cure of experimental digestive Chagas disease with trypanocidal chemotherapy.

Digestive Chagas disease (DCD) is an enteric neuropathy caused by Trypanosoma cruzi infection. There is a lack of evidence on the mechanism of pathogenesis and rationales for treatment. We used a female C3H/HeN mouse model that recapitulates key clinical manifestations to study how infection dynamics shape DCD pathology and the impact of treatment with the front-line, anti-parasitic drug benznidazole. Curative treatment 6 weeks post-infection resulted in sustained recovery of gastrointestinal transit function, whereas treatment failure led to infection relapse and gradual return of DCD symptom

Impact of Prior Digestive System Disease on In-Hospital Gastrointestinal Bleeding in Patients with Acute Myocardial Infarction.

OBJECTIVE: Patients presenting with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) with prior digestive system disease are more likely to suffer from gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding than those without these diseases. However, few articles reported how the different conditions of the digestive tract produced different risks of GI bleeding. METHODS: A single-center study on 7464 patients admitted for AMI from December 2010 to June 2019 in the Beijing Chaoyang Heart Center was retrospectively examined. Patients with major GI bleeding (n = 165) were compared with patients without (n = 7299). Univariate and mul
