Notification and support for people exposed to the risk of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) (or other prion diseases) through medical treatment (iatrogenically).

BACKGROUND: Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) and variant CJD (vCJD) are rare and always-fatal diseases transmissible via certain medical procedures. If a person is exposed to the disease risk through medical treatment, they may need to be notified of this to prevent them passing the risk to others in healthcare settings and to enable additional infection control measures to be put in place for certain procedures. As CJD is incurable, and unable to be screened for or effectively treated, communicating this risk information after an exposure incident may have significant implications for the pers

Setting clinically relevant thresholds for the notification of canine disease outbreaks to veterinary practitioners: an exploratory qualitative interview study.

INTRODUCTION: The Small Animal Veterinary Surveillance Network (SAVSNET) has developed mathematical models to analyse the veterinary practice and diagnostic laboratory data to detect genuine outbreaks of canine disease in the United Kingdom. There are, however, no validated methods available to establish the clinical relevance of these genuine statistical outbreaks before their formal investigation is conducted. This study aimed to gain an actionable understanding of a veterinary practitioner's preferences regarding which outbreak scenarios have a substantial impact on veterinary practice for

Durations of asymptomatic, symptomatic, and care-seeking phases of tuberculosis disease with a Bayesian analysis of prevalence survey and notification data.

BACKGROUND: Ratios of bacteriologically positive tuberculosis (TB) prevalence to notification rates are used to characterise typical durations of TB disease. However, this ignores the clinical spectrum of tuberculosis disease and potentially long infectious periods with minimal or no symptoms prior to care-seeking. METHODS: We developed novel statistical models to estimate progression from initial bacteriological positivity including smear conversion, symptom onset and initial care-seeking. Case-detection ratios, TB incidence, durations, and other parameters were estimated by fitting the mode

Using data linkage to improve the completeness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander status in communicable disease notifications in Victoria.

OBJECTIVE: The burden of notifiable diseases in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Victorians cannot be accurately estimated due to under-reporting of Indigenous status. We used data linkage to improve completeness of Indigenous status in people notified with viral hepatitis and gonococcal infection. METHODS: Notifications made between 2009 and 2010 were linked with Victorian hospitalisation data (1997-2011). Notification rates by Indigenous status and rate ratios were calculated before and after linkage. RESULTS: There were 12,448 cases of hepatitis B, hepatitis C and gonococcal infectio

Prion diseases are undercompulsory notification in Brazil: Surveillance of cases evaluated by biochemicaland/or genetic markers from 2005 to 2007.

UNLABELLED: The emergence of the new variant of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) in the United Kingdom has raised concerns over the risks of this prion disease in other parts of the world. Since 2005, human prion diseases have been under compulsory notification in Brazil. It is well known that some polymorphisms within the cellular prion gene (PRNP) have been associated to a higher susceptibility to sporadic CJD (sCJD) and vCJD. OBJECTIVES: To describe the first notified cases and to evaluate the presence of mutations and polymorphisms of the PRNP in these cases. METHODS: Thirty-five notifie

National survey of tuberculosis notifications in England and Wales in 1983: characteristics of disease. Report from the Medical Research Council Tuberculosis and Chest Diseases Unit.

The number of newly notified, previously untreated patients in a survey of notifications of tuberculosis in England and Wales conducted by the MRC in 1983 was 26% lower than in the previous MRC survey in 1978/79. In both surveys the great majority of patients were of White (about half) or Indian subcontinent (Indian, Pakistani or Bangladeshi) ethnic origin (just over a third). The notification rates in the Indian subcontinent (ISC) ethnic groups were much higher than for the White group and were highest in those most recently arrived in the UK. There were a number of differences in the finding

Implementing an intra outbreak ring vaccination clinical trial for Sudan Ebola virus disease within four days of outbreak notification in Uganda.

East and Central Africa experiences heightened threats for Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), with the latest outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo ebolavirus (BDBV) reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda on 15th May 2026. The BDBV outbreak comes just over a year following the declaration of Sudan Virus Disease (SVD) outbreak in Uganda on 30th January 2025. Following the 2025 outbreak, a race against the clock mobilization occurred over the subsequent four days to launch a ring vaccination trial for a candidate vaccine against SVD. During this four-day period, the investigation

Short-term effects of atmospheric pressure, temperature, and rainfall on notification rate of community-acquired Legionnaires' disease in four European countries.

Legionnaires' disease (LD) is caused by the inhalation of aerosols containing Legionella, a Gram-negative bacteria. Previous national- or regional-level studies have suggested an impact of climate on LD incidence. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of temperature, rainfall, and atmospheric pressure on short-term variations in LD notification rate. EU/EEA Member States report their LD surveillance data to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control. Community-acquired LD cases reported by Denmark, Germany, Italy, and The Netherlands with onset date in 2007-2012

Discordance between trends in chlamydia notifications and hospital admission rates for chlamydia related diseases in New South Wales, Australia.

BACKGROUND: In Australia, notification rates for chlamydia have increased fourfold since the early 1990s. An increasing incidence of genital Chlamydia trachomatis infection would be expected to lead to a rise in the incidence of chlamydia related diseases. OBJECTIVES: To determine trends in hospital admission rates for pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), ectopic pregnancy, and epididymo-orchitis in New South Wales. METHODS: Age specific admission rates from 1992 to 2001 were ascertained using inpatient data from all hospitals within the state. RESULTS: Among women aged 15-34 years, hospital

Using linked birth, notification, hospital and mortality data to examine false-positive meningococcal disease reporting and adjust disease incidence estimates for children in New South Wales, Australia.

Meningococcal disease is a rare, rapidly progressing condition which may be difficult to diagnose, disproportionally affects children, and has high morbidity and mortality. Accurate incidence estimates are needed to monitor the effectiveness of vaccination and treatment. We used linked notification, hospital, mortality and birth data for all children of an Australian state (2000-2007) to estimate the incidence of meningococcal disease. A total of 595 cases were notified, 684 cases had a hospital diagnosis, and 26 cases died from meningococcal disease. All deaths were notified, but only 68% (46
