Journal of trauma & dissociation : the official journal of the International Society for the Study of Dissociation (ISSD)2008eng
Along with psychoform dissociation, somatoform dissociation has been put forth as a core aspect of dissociative states, possibly as reliable as psychoform dissociation in the screening for dissociative disorders. The goal of this study was to investigate the prominence and correlates of somatoform dissociation in one of the major Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed., text rev.) dissociative disorders, depersonalization disorder (DPD). A total of 54 adults with DPD and 47 healthy control participants free of lifetime Axis I and II disorders were administered the 20-ite

The case of a patient with symptoms suggestive of a dissociative disorder is presented. The consultant reviews the diagnosis of multiple personality disorder (MPD) as defined in DSM-III-R and DSM-IV in relation to the patient's dissociative states, hallucinations, memory loss, and other symptoms. He then highlights the distinctions among MPD, schizophrenia, borderline personality disorder, major depression, and complex partial seizures. After presenting the conceptualization of MPD as a chronic posttraumatic stress disorder, he concludes with a review of treatment approaches that address the t

Both the number of patients with dissociative disorder and that of those with self-injury have been increasing since the end of the twentieth century, suggesting that dissociation and self-injury might be closely related. When dissociative disorder coexists with self-injury, it implies self-punishment and a wish to be understood by others. Although many cases of self-injury observed since 2000 lacked traumatic experiences and were not accompanied by pathological dissociative symptoms, the patients did have dissociative tendencies. According to the results of our study examining self-injury in

Three cases of dissociative disorder presenting with catatonia are described. Catatonia is generally believed to be associated with schizophrenia. However, many other conditions are also known to cause catatonia. A brief review of literature is provided. All the cases improved rapidly with a few ECTs. This report aims to highlight the presentation of dissociative disorders with catatonia. It also seeks to bring to notice the need to avoid lumping all non-organic catatonics under the rubric of schizophrenia so as to ensure proper treatment.

The present study examined the prevalence and correlates of dissociative symptoms in patients with panic disorder and patients with other nonpanic anxiety disorders. A total of 56 patients with anxiety disorders (13 with panic disorder alone, 16 with comorbid panic and other anxiety, and 27 with other anxiety disorders) were assessed with structured clinical interviews and a battery of questionnaires. Although 69% of patients with panic disorder experienced depersonalization or derealization during their panic attacks, panic disorder patients were no more likely to experience dissociative expe

Cognitive neurofunctional disorders (NFDs) and dissociative amnesia (DA) are distinct clinical entities, although they may share common pathophysiological mechanisms, vulnerabilities, and risk factors. When carefully assessed, cognitive neurofunctional disorders appear to be relatively common in memory clinics, accounting for up to 20% of consultations. The widespread adoption of the term "functional" over the past decade reflects the non-organic nature of these disorders and is generally well understood by patients. This terminology has progressively replaced earlier terms such as "psychogeni

Participants in studies of cue-induced drug craving have reacted to cues not only by craving drugs, but also by vividly reexperiencing drug-using sensations and perceptions, for example, tasting cocaine in the back of the throat or feeling euphoric. This study investigated whether such cue-triggered reliving (C-T-R) states are common, what subjective qualities characterize them, their relationship to craving, and their relationship to trauma. Questionnaires and a PTSD screening tool were administered to 77 participants recruited from substance use disorder treatment and self-help fellowships,

The aim of the current study was to explore how the social stigmatization of dissociative identity disorder (DID) compared to that of schizophrenia and depressive disorders. Using a between-subjects experimental design, a total of 139 participants (126 usable data [39 men, 84 women, 3 other]) from the general population were randomly assigned to either a DID, schizophrenia, or depressive disorders experimental condition and responded to an adapted version of the Prejudice Toward People With Mental Illness (PPMI) Scale. Results suggested that, overall, depressive disorders were stigmatized agai

Dissociative/conversion disorders affect almost 31% of children and adolescents in a clinical setting. These children experience significant impairments in their academics, and daily functioning, with high chances of developing other psychiatric comorbidities such as anxiety and depression. However, there are no studies that explore the experiences of suffering from dissociative/conversion disorders from perspective of the sufferer. Therefore, the paper has aimed at exploring the subjective experiences of dissociative and conversion disorders among adolescents in the Indian context by examinin

Dissociative symptoms have been the subject of psychiatric inquiry since the beginning of this century (Putnam 1992; Sanders 1986; van der Kolk and van der Hart 1989). Although recent investigations have focused on the four specific dissociative disorders (American Psychiatric Association 1994) and their relationship to early traumatic experiences (Chu and Dill 1990; Putnam 1985; Terr 1991), dissociative symptoms have been reported in virtually every major psychiatric disorder (Bremner et al. 1992; Goff et al. 1992; Steinberg 1992), and, in less severe forms, even in nonpatient populations (Br

To estimate the prevalence of dissociative disorders in a day hospital and examine their relation to traumatic experiences, trained clinicians evaluated 70 of 229 patients consecutively admitted to an acute care day hospital. They used the Mini-Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R Dissociative Disorders and the Traumatic Experience Questionnaire. Six of the 70 patients (9 percent) received a definite diagnosis of a dissociative disorder. Five of the six patients reported a childhood history of sexual or physical abuse. The results show that dissociative disorders are not rare among gene

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the neural correlates of dissociative amnesia, a transdiagnostic symptom mostly present in the dissociative disorders and core characteristic of dissociative identity disorder (DID). Given the vital role of the hippocampus in memory, a prime candidate for investigation is whether total and/or subfield hippocampal volume can serve as biological markers of dissociative amnesia.
METHODS: A total of 75 women, 32 with DID and 43 matched healthy controls (HC), underwent structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Using Freesurfer (version 6.0), volumes were extrac

In this study, the prevalence and severity of traumatic experiences as reported by patients with dissociative disorders and with other DSM-IV psychiatric diagnoses were compared. Furthermore, the predictive value of emotional, physical, and sexual trauma with respect to somatoform and psychological dissociation was analyzed. In contrast with comparison patients, dissociative disorder patients reported severe and multifaceted traumatization. Physical and sexual trauma predicted somatoform dissociation, sexual trauma predicted psychological dissociation as well. According to the memories of the

We describe the trajectory of a 24-year-old woman with a history of borderline personality disorder (BPD) and complex trauma who presented with significant dissociative episodes. The initial assessment-including a psychiatric interview, the use of standardized measures (PCL-5, CAPS-5), and collateral information gathering-identified complex post-traumatic-stress disorder (PTSD) comorbid with dissociative identity disorder (DIID) and incomplete diagnostic criteria for BPD. Treatment consisted of an integrated psychiatric and psychotherapeutic approach based on the DBT-PTSD model. After just ove

The aim of this study was to investigate axis-I comorbidity in patients with dissociative identity disorder (DID) and dissociative disorder not otherwise specified (DDNOS). Using the Diagnostic Interview for Psychiatric Disorders, results from patients with DID (n = 44) and DDNOS (n = 22) were compared with those of patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) (n = 13), other anxiety disorders (n = 14), depression (n = 17), and nonclinical controls (n = 30). No comorbid disorders were found in nonclinical controls. The average number of comorbid disorders in patients with depression or a

The authors interviewed 118 highly dissociative inpatients in a Trauma Program with the Dissociative Disorders Interview Schedule, the Dissociative Experiences Scale and the Adverse Childhood Experiences questionnaire; of the 118 participants 42 met DSM-5 criteria for dissociative identity disorder and 52 for other specified dissociative disorder. The average score on the Dissociative Experiences Scale in the sample of 118 participants was 44.7. The authors also conducted semi-structured interviews inquiring about the circumstances and triggers for reversal of amnesia for childhood trauma in t

BACKGROUND: It is important to understand the most diverse cultural aspects related to religiosity. Scientifically, it is important to understand religious manifestations and their relation to health, and to differentiate them from psychopathological manifestations.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the mental health of a group of mediums and compare it with that of a control group from the same religious context who do not manifest mediumship, using the Dissociative Disorders Interview Schedule (DDIS).
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study, evaluating 47 mediums (Group 1) and comparing them with 2

A 20-year-old man was admitted to an inpatient psychiatric unit for self-professed dissociative identity disorder. His presentation of multiple personalities without amnesia, dissociation or depersonalisation led to further examination of personality and cultural factors that may contribute to this uncommon presentation. Careful clinical investigation supported a diagnosis of schizotypal personality disorder with elements of fantastical thinking influenced by media presentations of dissociative identity disorder.
